Plays just like a film, you feel like Indy and it has a really good story
A great Indiana Jones style adventure like in the movies, they did a great job capturing the feeling, style and atmosphere.
An absolute treasure. It will thunder punch and whip swing its way into your heart.
I saw Raiders in the theater at 8 years old and it changed my view of cinema forever. So one would hope the gaming experience would deliver, but we've been waiting decades as Laura Craft ran with it. Played the original Atari game, then the arcade flavors until the franchise hit NES and Genesis. Big upgrades with Super NES and N64 with the Infernal Machine which also came to PC. But the biggest in my mind was Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb where it felt the tech was catching up as nothing really did it justice. Yet this game caught me off guard. I have been avoiding paying full price for Bethesda games since they were bought out and their leadership continued to suck. MachineGames has proven they are a powerhouse with this game, but I am also one who loved The New Order, The Old Blood, The New Colossus, and Youngblood. It is extremely well done, gorgeous and was so much fun to play, I was always wanting to see what discovery is next or new puzzle. I didn't have any performance issues, a few small glitches here and there. Overall very smooth experience, but I am also not playing on a potato that should be in a museum. This game made me excited for a sequel as well as Wolfenstein. Then I read up on how well this game did in sales (not good), a cancelled secret project (probably Wolfenstein) and the politics of Microsoft... ID Tech was just gutted by XBox CEO and the CEO of MachineGames is now running Arkane since their CEO quit while they were working on a Marvel game (Blade?). I expect anything that MachineGames touches will be brilliant, but the future does not look very bright as Microsoft scrambles to right size their business for bad gambles in the past which will crush these creative studios. I guess just being license mills. The future looks bleak... sad really.
I wasn´t quite sure what to expect of "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle". I love Indiana Jones and I find it almost impossible not to compare the game to the films. Which is a lot to live up to. By my book there are only two movies which really nailed the character and the atmosphere, "Raiders" and "Last Crusade". "Temple of Doom" was actually pretty grim and turned Jones into an almost misogynistic macho and what could have been another strong female lead into an ever screaming hysteric. Years later came "Crystal Skull" which was only epic as in epic failure and finally "Dial of Destiny" which had some great ideas but was overloaded with exposition. To get the story going Jones not only had to suffer a failed marriage but also the death of his son, pension shock and even a completely senseless murder plot which got dropped only minutes later never to be mentioned again or at least somehow resolved. Which literally brings us to the first thing the game gets right. In "Great Circle" Indy also suffers from a broken relationship (with the same woman, only decades earlier). There is a break-in, an insignificant artifact gets stolen by a giant man who loses an ancient seal of the Vatican. That´s about it and it is plenty. Indy wants to run away and there is a mystery, an opportunity for discovery. It is as simple as it is relatable. From here on the writers nail everything and this is no small feat considering that even the legends Lucas/Spielberg and the great James Mangold got a lot wrong in the final two installments. Seeing Indiana Jones roam the hidden catacombs of the Vatican and punching Italian fascists is just perfect and makes you wonder why nobody else ever cooked up that idea before. There are a couple of easter eggs, there is blockbuster nostalgia but they never feel forced. There is Gina, a fully fleshed-out female lead who challenges our hero but never feels like a Marion Ravenwood rip-off. There is a disgusting villain who even the nazis dislike. The gameplay doesn´t reinvent the wheel and it doesn´t have to. "Great Circle" feels a lot like a game in the "Dishonored"-series which I don´t mind since I played the hell out of these games. It simply fits since it presents an opportunity to use all the basic elements of an Indiana Jones story. There are puzzles in abandoned tombs, mysteries to uncover, passages to climb, exotic places to explore and hordes of bad guys to whip. Gathering from the trailers that this was basically a FPS I was at first skeptical how the game could possibly capture the titular character. MachineGames actually made some very good choices here. There are quite a few cinematic cut scenes (who always bring the story forward and never outstay their welcome) and the game switches to a third person perspective when climbing or swinging. And there is Troy Baker who perfectly recreates but never copies Harrison Ford´s performance. Honestly, I could have sworn that this was either Ford´s voice, facial expression and body language or some heavy AI at work. Neither is true. It´s Baker all the time and he is fantastic. Is this actually the modern day Indiana Jones sequel we always wanted but never got? Hell, yes.
This is just barely still a positive review. While trying to be all of it, It's a worse adventure game than the Tomb Raider reboots, a worse immersive sim than the Dishonoreds and a worse action game than the Wolfensteins. On the + side: - Emmerich Voss, props to the responsible devs/writer. He is such a good character and written so well. - Feels like Indy, plays like Indy and that's enough for the first 10ish hours to make the game enjoyable. - Speakers as well as music are really good. - Very detailled environment. - Expert location building. On the - side: - Enemy AI is just so terrible. There is no challenge even on the hardest difficulty, as the enemies are blind, deaf and stupid. - Sneaking approach to the game is lackluster. - So is a combat approach. - Infinite respawning enemies. You clear a location, come back later, and all the 10-40 enemies are there again. Major immersion breaker and very annoying. - The open levels become tedious fast, since lot's of backtracking is constantly required if you want to discover everything. - Annoying, popping in textures without any workaround, especially in chapter 3 (Sukhothai). I had problems motivating myself to finish this game, especially after hour 20. Less would have been more here.
Hammer Game !! Atmosphäre, Sound, Gameplay, Performance, Grafik sind alle auf einem Hohem Niveau. 10/10
