Speed regulation is non-existent. When I play level 1 it runs about half speed (compared to the video on the store page). But level 2 runs too fast! (Improved somewhat by forcing V-Sync on in the options, but leaving me unsure what speed it's supposed to go at - If I have a 70hz display is that going to make the game run faster than on 60hz??) Balancing is all over the place - I was making it through level 2 fairly easily, until one shot from the boss killed me outright from something like full health + 1/4 shield - and it didn't even look like a big attack, just a small yellow homing bullet. The shield getting smaller and making it easier to dodge as it takes damage isn't a bad idea, but if a single hit can knock off my shield and kill me in one go (even though the bullet would have been miles off hitting me if I didn't have a shield), that's just annoying. Normal enemies on level 3 seemed far too tough to be fun, and none of the weapons in the shop were significant upgrades so I stopped there. Also, the joypad support on menus is pretty rubbish - you have to drive the mouse pointer around (without even analog input)
Rating (out of 10) ★★ Overview Icarus-X is a boring vertical scrolling shooter made for mobile phones. Positive (good features) ✔ Rotating lasers are a nice idea. Neutral (average/expected features) ♦ It runs at 4K in Windows 10. Negative (bad features) ✖ Dreadful music. Especially compared to Matt Murphy's midi music for Raptor (1994!). ✖ Ugly, uninteresting visuals and design. ✖ Yawn-inducing gameplay. ✖ Tiny space to fly in. ✖ Starting a map takes ~10 seconds. ✖ Bosses appear ~10 seconds before you can actually damage them. ✖ They copied Magic Find, the worst element of Diablo. ✖ Skill that improve Magic Find. ✖ Items that give bonus XP. ✖ Skill that gives bonus XP. ✖ Noticable early jump in difficulty. ✖ Grinding. Lots of it. Conclusion A boring, ugly, uninspired mobile cashgrab made worse by grinding. Details ⯍ Experience with genre: I've played a bunch of these, starting with Raptor: Call of the Shadows (1994). ⯍ Experience with game: Played it for a whole hour. ⯍ Recommended to: People who love vertical scrolling shooters but hate themselves/life.
basic, simple, fun but wait for deep sale
3/10
I guess if you get 8 hours of play from a plain and simple 2D shooter it deserves a thumbs up. Contrary to some negative reviews, I like the presentation and the simple nature of the game. Some of the stats are a little confusing from the loot-drops but the progress system works fine overall and the leaderboard is fine and functional. It won't blow yer mind but is worth a blast in my opinion.
best childhood game, play it it's worth it
