A breathtaking sci-fi visual novel! Since the Z gas appeared in the atmosphere, it is no longer possible to breath outside the Dome. You play as Carl Thanavan, a young scientist determined to uncover the origin of the catastrophe. Which path will you choose?
Visit SaveOrQuit.com for detailed game reviews, posted daily!
‘Hypoxia – One Last Breath’ is a short visual novel game taking place in a post-apocalyptic future with some interesting world-building ideas. It appears to be the first part of what might become an entire series. The amount of oxygen in the atmosphere is decreasing due to a mysterious Z-gas that is reacting with it, and so humanity has built a dome where a perfect amount of oxygen is preserved and where the most privileged get to live, whilst everyone else has to live outside the dome where it's a constant battle for survival. The world-building is pretty detailed and pulled off well, and there are some moral and political themes explored in a pretty mature way. The plot involves the main character being a new student at a prestigious science centre and ending up on a dangerous mission together with a brazen and good-looking new friend he made, Olivia. The story is mostly linear but has choices every now and again, many of which can lead to early bad endings. Which choices lead to early bad endings is not always intuitive or logical though. You could end up with a strange set of events that spiral out of control and lead you to a bad ending, and the miracle events can occur at the other choice which carry the game going, the kind of events that could've occurred at the bad ending choice too. So, save your game whenever presented with choices. The visuals are pretty great and colourful. There is a good distinction between polished areas inside the dome and the dilapidated areas outside it. And the images of character busts and scenes are all beautifully done too. The music is generally ok, though at times felt a bit unsuited to the area or scene. Some of the pacing and flow could be better, I think, as the main character's internal narration butts into the conversation too often, and also action scenes could use something more than just a character bust and intense music. Generally, it's a decent VN. Not the best, but since it's free, it's worth a look if you're into sci-fi and VNs. The setting is interesting enough to give it a look, and there could be more parts to this in the future that continue the plot. Hypoxia is a visual novel about a disaster that's rendered most of the Earth nearly unbreathable, save for the Dome. Is everything as the government claims? Or do the rebels have a valid point worth investigating? This game is a CG paradise. There is a crazy amount of them for the only 2.5 hours this ride lasts. And all of those, the BGs and the characters simply look fantastic. Nothing but praise for the visuals. There's a lot of music as well, suiting whatever's happening on screen. The writing keeps the reader engaged throughout and there's never a dull moment. Does a wonderful job of setting up for the next VNs and I can't wait to see where it goes. There's really only 1 bad thing related to the content, the rest of it is all technical. There's a number of text errors, though it's less typos and more weird word order/choices. Less annoying and more just jarring, but doesn't majorly impact reading.

Settings don't save, so you have to constantly turn fullscreen on and change volume or text speed at every game launch.
The log initially appears to be useless as it doesn't start at what you just read, but rather what you read 100s and 100s of lines ago. The mouse scroll wheel moves extremely slow. There IS a scroll bar on the right side though which may appear invisible depending on what the background is.
You can't hide the UI while reading. Some of the BGs and CGs have details that are hidden by this so this is an unfortunate oversight.
Pressing Esc just quits the game instantly. Just why? I pressed this out of experimentation due to the below issue.
QSave and QLoad should just be renamed Save and Load as there is nothing quick about them, initially confusing me on how to use the regular save menu.
The concept idea of this game is interesting. Not just that, music, art and background r also good. The reason for the thumb down is the UI and maybe bugs. UI There's no shortcut for opening the logs so u need to click the "log" section (most VN used "Tab" or "Mouse wheel scroll" for log shortcut) and when u open the logs by clicking it, it didnt open to the last dialogue that ur reading but it starts from the beginning of the conversation when u open the game. To get to the text that ur reading right at that moment, u need to scroll really long depending on ur game progress. The log box itself is too transparent and not well design so when u open the log, the dialogue that ur reading at that moment clearly shown in the log box alongside with the previous dialogues. The ESC button in this game will directly close ur game without even giving the usual warning like "Are you sure to quit the game?" (At first, I thought Esc is the same with back and it took me by surprise when I click esc to close the log but it just closed the game instead) Bug? Im not sure if this is a bug or it's just a bad design, but whenever I already click Q-save or Q-load, I unable to go back to resume the game, even though I already clicked "back" button multiple times. This is the reason why I cant continue the game because I cant quit the Q-save page without closing the game. Perhaps if Dev improves and fixes the problems that I mentioned above, I will change my review and resume the game, but if not, then it's a shame. The story is interestingly good but I have to uninstall a game that I can't play.
Overall, it's a good game with an interesting story. Other than a few bugs that I experienced such as not being able to click the buttons on the title screen sometimes and escape closing the game (as a hobbyist developer, I think this was accidentally left in after testing). I really just wish it was longer.
I'm not used to visual novels so I can't really compare it to similar games. Nevertheless, I can say I find any aspect of the game flawless. The OST is a catchy, characters and backgrounds are really detailed, which is impressive for a small team game. Story is complex yet enjoyable with a mix of fast-paced action and psychology development of the characters. The universe stands as a solid base for many games and makes the player eager to know what comes next. About my wishes for the next episodes, I would like having a tree displaying the different endings, or at least a list of them in the Extras, in a similar fashion as the Gallery. Finally, I encountered a few bugs but they didn't affect the overall experience. I totally recommend this game !
Hypoxia - One Last Breath is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This is your typical high school anime club dropout fanfiction, as usual featuring the authors imaginary girlfriends/waifus and with a rather poor post apocalypse/sci fi theme, but as usual most of this fanfiction is just cringe. The only notable thing going on here is someone dug up a copy of Visual Novel Maker instead of using the usual Ren'Py construction kit to wrap around the highschool dropout writing. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. Now imagine that experience, but with much worse writing (because if these guys could write professionally, they'd be published authors and this would be on shelves in bookstores, and they wouldn't have to pay Valve $100 to self-publish this on Steam), and you have your average Steam e-book. One of the chief problems with failed authors polluting Steam with non-game E-books is that E-books can easily just be presented in a web browser... there's no justification for charging money on Steam for what might as well be a webpage. We don't spend thousands on buying a gaming rig to spend money on Steam for something Chrome or Firefox could do. While this E-book is "free", you can get better quality, professionally written books and comics for free online (from places like Project Gutenberg) or from public libraries. Steam isn't a comic book store, neither is it Netflix, it's for games. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. It's impossible for me to recommend things to PC gamers that aren't really games.
