Found the game series originally on the app store and decided to buy the series in the bundle- so here are my thoughts on this game: Concept is easy to understand; both characters have a secret side to them that they don't show the other, and eventually they find out and get together. Simple, right? The story is fairly easy, the game gives you indications on your choice type. The artstyle is quite cute and so are the CG's for the particular routes you end up on and the voice acting also adds to how nice the game and story is. I enjoyed it for the most part- did I think the price was worth every penny? maybe? maybe not? But it's defenitally a one time kinda game you'd play for the heck of it.
How to Take Off Your Mask, developed and published by ROSEVERTE, is a gentle and heartfelt fantasy visual novel that combines light romance, whimsical comedy, and a sincere exploration of identity. Set in the world of Eroolia, a land divided between humans and cat-like people known as Luccretias, the story follows a young woman named Lilia who lives an ordinary life as a baker in the human city of Leezera. Her peaceful routine is suddenly upended when she awakens one morning to find that she has grown cat ears and a tail. The transformation forces her to confront a hidden part of herself and brings her face-to-face with social tensions between species, personal insecurities, and the complicated relationship she shares with her childhood friend, Ronan. The game’s simple premise quickly evolves into an endearing story about acceptance, both of oneself and of others. The narrative thrives on its duality—balancing lighthearted humor with tender emotional beats. Lilia’s discovery of her Luccretia form is initially played for laughs, with her confusion and embarrassment setting a comical tone. But beneath the humor lies a deeper question: what does it mean to truly reveal yourself? The title’s metaphor becomes increasingly literal as the story progresses. Lilia’s “mask” represents the roles she plays to fit into society, and her transformation forces her to choose between hiding and embracing her real identity. Ronan, meanwhile, is torn between his duties as a city guard and his feelings for Lilia, unaware of the truth behind her dual form. Their relationship evolves naturally, moving from teasing banter to emotional vulnerability, and the writing maintains a warmth and sincerity that make their connection feel genuine. The dialogue flows comfortably, capturing the playfulness of friends who have known each other for years while hinting at the deeper affection they’ve both been reluctant to acknowledge. From a gameplay perspective, How to Take Off Your Mask follows the traditional format of a visual novel, consisting of reading dialogue, making occasional choices, and unlocking different endings based on those decisions. The game is fully voiced in Japanese, adding liveliness to the characters and enhancing immersion. While the branching structure is not particularly complex—most choices subtly influence tone rather than drastically alter outcomes—the story is paced well enough to maintain interest. The overall length is short, allowing players to finish a single route within a few hours, but the concise storytelling works to its advantage. It never overstays its welcome or drags out emotional moments, instead delivering its themes with focus and sincerity. Visually, the game possesses a distinct charm. ROSEVERTE’s hand-drawn art style emphasizes soft colors, expressive character designs, and cozy backgrounds that fit the tone of a small, fantasy town. The remastered version introduces high-definition artwork, smoother animations, and redrawn environments that give the presentation a fresh polish while retaining the charm of the original. The use of animated facial expressions adds depth to the characters’ emotions, and the simple but polished interface ensures that reading and choice-making feel seamless. The music, with its gentle piano and flute motifs, perfectly complements the romantic and whimsical mood, shifting to more dramatic tones during moments of tension. It’s an understated but effective soundtrack that enhances the feeling of being immersed in a light fantasy world. Where the game truly succeeds is in its tone. It doesn’t try to overwhelm players with overly dramatic twists or heavy-handed moral lessons. Instead, it invites you into a story that feels personal and sincere. Themes of prejudice and social division are present, but they are explored through character interactions rather than exposition. The narrative never loses sight of its heart—the growing bond between two people learning to see each other beyond appearances. Lilia’s struggle to reconcile her human and Luccretia identities mirrors Ronan’s need to balance his sense of duty with his emotions, and their shared journey toward honesty gives the story a sense of completeness. It’s a tale that feels comforting, like a fairytale with modern emotional sensibilities. That said, the simplicity that makes How to Take Off Your Mask charming can also limit its appeal. Players looking for a sprawling narrative or deep branching routes may find it too straightforward. The world-building, while intriguing, isn’t heavily detailed, and the supporting characters serve mostly to frame the central romance rather than contribute subplots of their own. Yet these limitations feel intentional; ROSEVERTE’s focus is intimacy, not scope. It’s a story about two people finding truth in themselves and in each other, and it succeeds beautifully in that confined space. The polished presentation, heartfelt voice acting, and balanced humor make it easy to become invested in Lilia’s journey, even if the path is a familiar one. In the end, How to Take Off Your Mask is a tender, well-crafted visual novel that understands the power of simplicity. It doesn’t rely on grandiose fantasy or dramatic conflict but on warmth, relatability, and character chemistry. The transformation from a comedic premise into a touching story of self-acceptance gives it emotional resonance that lingers after the credits roll. For fans of cozy, character-driven romance or anyone seeking a short yet satisfying visual novel experience, it stands out as one of ROSEVERTE’s most accessible and heartfelt works. It’s a gentle reminder that removing one’s mask—both literally and figuratively—isn’t just about revealing what’s hidden, but about finding the courage to live honestly and love freely. Rating: 8/10

This game is well-produced in terms of its art and music, so the price tag makes sense, although I admittedly got this as a gift I think. It reminds me of Magical Otoge Ciel and Tokyo Mew Mew in terms of its vibes. The story was relatively simple but there were some questions I feel were left unanswered (potentially sequel bait? not sure). The dialogue isn't perfect in some places and can come off a bit childish, but it made sense considering the ages of the main character and LI. I admit though the voice acting is very exaggerated to be childish like in a stereotypical anime and I fortunately was able to turn it off - I am sure some people love that, and I appreciated the option to toggle it off/on, so I'm not going to mark it down for that, but it's just a personal ick for me.I would probably purchase a sequel game, if they do make it.
i love the look of the game. characters are nice and it's really chill but still have action
