This is a very unusual run-and-gun game. The levels are large and partially non-linear, but you always face left and can only fire at three angles. Finding the best path to approach the deeply entrenched enemies feels like a puzzle. Despite the fast action, this game is very strategic.
I have read numerous stories about the Hover Attack series on blogs and even watched on youtube about this game, and I was surprised this was revived here on Steam! For history buffs who need a lesson: Hover Attack is a challenging vintage retro shooter from the 1980s with emphasis on base destruction: You have a mech and a lander that can reload your arsenal. Objective is simple: Do as much damage as you can and destroy the main enemy core, but be careful: If your mech or lander gets destroyed in the process: GAMEOVER. This revived take carries a LOT of the vintage maps along with some new challenges on the way. Even I had a field day dying numerous times on some of the challenges XD. If you're in the need of something historically vintage and challenging, I highly recommend this game.
It could have been a great tribute to a forgotten classic. But ended up being just a so-so, unfinished and unpolished conversion. A real shame.
