*contains spoilers* While this game definitely had some pros (graphics clarity, plot line, logical game progression and speed, etc.), there were a few things that I very much did not like, the main one being the premise; Flaming snakes. Flaming. Snakes. Taking over the world. I very much realize this is a fantasy game and requires a decent suspension of logic. What house would ever have 1,000 doors, right? But flaming snakes bursting out of the ground and destroying the world is so far flung from the general suspension of logic required for the first two games, it was just laughable. I laughed at how stupid it was, and I really hate saying that because this series is my second favorite HOP series of all time. Secondly, Kate's visual design. The only phrase that comes to mind is "wtf!?". I don't care about her change of clothing or hair style or any of that, I care about just how poorly drawn she is. What is going on with her lack of eyebrows and extremely masculine features? Also, her boots change color depending on what world she's in (they are supposedly brown but change to white in the fourth world cut scene). I would almost say it was just laziness on the designers' part, but Rafael and the other characters are well done, so I don't know what happened. Otherwise, this is a fine game and worth playing, and the bonus game is well done as well.
excellent

🧩Undecided & Puzzled Reviews🧩Visit and follow my curator page if you enjoyed this review❤️

House of 1000 Doors: Serpent Flame
I wish there was a mixed recommendation button. TL;DR at the end. Here are my "Yes I recommend" and my " No I don't recommend" : Yes- I recommend it if you have been following the story. Although not fully straight lined and can be played standalone, you will recognize characters, the house and some subtle story hints of previous games. It is still a fun game with lots of great places to go around. The puzzles (in casual mode) are not so challenging but still entertaining. I did find myself feeling I was breezing through these when in previous games, even in casual, they took a me a few minutes to decipher. I also enjoyed the bonus story available at the end of the game. Thought it was an excellent addition
for the new character's story (forgot his name) while he was just lying in bed. Knowing that chunk of time something was actually going on and seeing how dreams (or nightmares) can twist and turn... I thought it was clever and made me feel much better about how the game ended.
I like that the continued the use of the map, making it easy to travel across places, especially when sometimes you get an object to be used at the very start of the game, but you received it in one of the last places. In casual mode you can also see the places that have actions available, that way you can't get too lost if you lose track of the story. There are not that many straightforward hidden object moments, but I will go more into that below. No- There are several things that irritated me in this game that weren't an issue with the first two. Starting with the character models. I know things were changing in the gaming industry (when aren't they?) and they were probably trying to make the game look better but in my opinion the characters look odd and very different from the character models in the previous ones. This also goes with voice overs and naming. I am unsure if the voice over actors are the same but they sound different in my opinion. Either they got replaced or they changed the direction for the characters. When I say naming, I mean the character names like
Saymon became Simon and Gabriel became Gabrielle (which the latter is a woman's name and to my knowledge the character is a male character since game one. I had to do double takes on the character models, voices and even names just to be sure these were the same from before.
Second would be the lack of straightforward hidden object scenarios. There were many "hidden objects" that you had to pair up the item given to you to another one in the pile of objects. For example, they give you a spoon, try to find a fork or they give you a picture you have to find the frame. That one was overly used, and I wasn't too fond of having that mode so frequently. Even in the regular hidden object mode they used the - needs interaction mode- way too much as well. It was very disappointing. Map icons. In this one they added that you can now see where the hidden beyond (sp?) objects are at but at the same time, following the map, I still managed to miss two although the map shows I collected all of them. That was also disappointing. Lastly, the ending. This goes for most of the hidden objects from Alawar but I think this one was the worst for me. it just seems like it cuts off and leaves you with a "huh? was that it?" sensation. TL;DR The game is mediocre at best compared to the previous two. Do not buy it at standard price, wait for a good sale (I've seen it go down to $.79 USD) to purchase. It is entertaining and it is not a short game so it can entertain you for a bit, but it does have repetitive modes of hidden object variations, and the puzzles are not challenging. For its third game in the series, it really took a nosedive. I am going to mark it as a yes for recommending the game but in reality, it is a mixed review. Enjoy at your own risk and get it on sale! :) Previous Chapter: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1175160/House_of_1000_Doors_The_Palm_of_Zoroaster/ Next Chapter: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1038620/House_of_1000_Doors_Evil_Inside/
It has has a big map, fun story line, nice mix of puzzles, and easy to follow set of goals. I was very pleased with this game.
I've been a big fan of this game series ever since I was twelve or thirteen. I've basically been replaying the games almost yearly. I love the visuals of the games; the art is extremely detailed, and the puzzles do become a bit more challenging in this instalment. I also like that they introduced a new search mini-game where you have to place objects in the right place instead of searching for them.
This game is very enjoyable to play. It has an amazing story and gameplay.
A much different tone to 'Family Secrets' and 'Palm of Zoroaster', 'Serpent Flame' introduces some proper CGI into the mix that make it seem both a tad tacky, but also a lot more cinematic at the same time. It also has some rather creative lore and mythology and the game play is just as fun, if not more accommodating thanks to the feature that indicates that there's still beyond objects to find
