Beautiful but Forgettable

Horizon Zero Dawn is a game I wanted to like more than I did. The setting is interesting, the machines look great and the main mystery has some strong moments. But most of the game feels like a Ubisoft checklist. You scan tracks, collect plants, clear camps and follow markers until it all starts to blend together. Fighting the machines is easily the best part. The rest of the world looks beautiful but often feels stiff and strangely empty. Aloy never worked for me as the big PlayStation icon Sony clearly wants her to be. She is capable and likeable but also too safe and too polished to leave much of an impression. With the sequel, remaster and even the LEGO game, it feels like Sony decided Horizon should become a huge franchise before it had really earned that status.

Great machines. Generic game.
Horizon Zero Dawn is best described as a game which takes an absurd premise, a world of science fiction robotic dinosaurs and tribal people armed with bows and arrows that hunt them, and then paints that picture in with an absurd amount of worldbuilding, environmental storytelling, and a story that does not loredump but rather helps the player experience the world from the point of view of Aloy, our loveable and sassy protagonist. Combat revolves around preparation and tactically dissecting enemies into less dangerous and more manageable parts with a variety of different tools and elemental attacks. Especially on higher difficulties, this dissection becomes essential. Enemy attacks without this method can become rapidly overwhelming. And knowing which parts to prioritize and which elemental statuses to inflict on your enemies is a core part of the gameplay loop. Exploration is made relatively simple. Finding one of the very tall giraffe-like machines allows Aloy to gain map data, revealing the fog of the map and allowing Aloy to see points of interest in a somewhat far cry-like style. Side quest content is usually found within the various tribal communities, and have many unique voice actors with mocapped or handmade animations. However, the rewards for most of the collect-a-thon content is frankly sub-par for this game. Dialogue is definitely one of the stronger parts of this game. There's a great deal of reactivity in dialogue to Aloy's decisions and even to what order you complete side quest and main quest content, a feature one would find more at home in a Rockstar title like Red Dead Redemption 2. Also, since cutscenes are rendered in game, outfits that Aloy wears will always be reflected, which is great. It's also worth mentioning that the tribal peoples of this far future Earth are depicted incredibly well, with each tribe possessing it's own achievements, wonders, culture, art, and unique dialects with phrases and words that help sell their authenticity. Friendly tribal warriors will also be found in their territories, patrolling and engaging enemies, and engage enemies with tenacity and competence, even on the hardest difficulty. The major negatives are that this game can be especially long for completionists. Hunting Grounds challenges are also very difficult at the highest difficulty, which for most players should absolutely only be played on NG+. Melee combat is also a bit of a wash outside of stealth takedowns in this game. The various helmets and headdresses are a bit goofy looking for my preference, but can be toggled off or on at will. Also, Glinthawks. If you're looking for a good exploration game with a new and different style of ranged combat and a well made world, you can't do much better. 9 destroyed and battered Glinthawks out of 10, would fight robot dinosaurs as a sassy and chatty redhead again.
