Hilarious and short JRPG that was clearly made as a passion project - kudos to the dev for going against modern gaming trends and generating something my partner said they 'thought was made in 2015 or something'. Standard JRPG gameplay with a handful of secrets. For $2, I couldn't be more satisfied.
HOOD RPG, developed and published by Cosmic Edge Gaming, is an unconventional indie role-playing game that builds its identity around chaotic humor, exaggerated scenarios, and a deliberately unfiltered tone. While it adopts the familiar structure of a classic pixel-style RPG—complete with exploration, turn-based combat, and party progression—it quickly sets itself apart through its writing, which leans heavily into satire and absurdity. It’s a game that prioritizes personality and unpredictability over refinement, creating an experience that feels intentionally rough around the edges but consistently distinctive. The story follows a group of unlikely characters navigating a chaotic, crime-filled environment after a dramatic escape, setting the stage for a journey that rarely takes itself seriously. Rather than focusing on a tightly structured narrative, the game presents a sequence of loosely connected events driven by humor and unexpected twists. Dialogue frequently veers into parody, often breaking conventional storytelling rules in favor of jokes and exaggerated interactions. This approach gives the game a unique rhythm, where the appeal lies less in where the story is going and more in how it gets there. It’s an experience built on surprise, where each new encounter feels like an opportunity for something strange or comedic to unfold. Combat is built on a traditional turn-based system, with party members utilizing a range of abilities to defeat enemies and progress through encounters. Mechanically, it remains fairly straightforward, offering enough variety to keep battles engaging without introducing significant complexity. Each character brings a distinct set of skills, encouraging players to experiment with different combinations and approaches. However, the depth of these systems is somewhat limited, and over time, encounters can begin to feel repetitive. What keeps combat interesting is less the strategy involved and more the game’s commitment to injecting humor into its mechanics, with unusual abilities and exaggerated effects that align with its overall tone. Exploration plays a supporting role in the experience, with environments designed to encourage curiosity and reward players who take the time to search for hidden content. Dungeons, side paths, and optional interactions provide opportunities to discover new characters, items, and comedic scenarios. The level design is functional rather than intricate, but it supports the game’s pacing by allowing for a steady flow between exploration, combat, and narrative moments. Puzzles and environmental challenges are present but generally light in difficulty, reinforcing the game’s focus on accessibility and entertainment rather than demanding gameplay. The writing is arguably the most defining aspect of HOOD RPG. It embraces a style of humor that is bold, often crude, and unapologetically over-the-top. This gives the game a strong sense of identity, but it also makes it highly dependent on player preference. For those who enjoy irreverent, internet-inspired comedy, the game offers a steady stream of memorable moments and unexpected dialogue. For others, the constant barrage of jokes may feel overwhelming or inconsistent, particularly when it overshadows the underlying narrative structure. Visually, the game sticks to a classic pixel-art presentation that aligns with its indie roots. The environments and character sprites are simple but serviceable, providing enough clarity to support gameplay without drawing significant attention to themselves. The focus remains on content and interaction rather than visual detail, and while the presentation is consistent, it doesn’t attempt to push the boundaries of the genre. Audio design follows a similar approach, offering functional support without becoming a standout feature. The overall scope of the game is modest, delivering a contained experience that doesn’t overextend itself. This helps maintain a consistent pace, but it also limits the depth of both its mechanics and narrative. Replayability comes primarily from exploring missed content or experimenting with different party setups, though the core experience remains largely unchanged across playthroughs. In the end, HOOD RPG is a game defined by its tone. Beneath its chaotic humor lies a competent but straightforward RPG framework that serves as a vehicle for its more distinctive elements. It doesn’t aim to compete with more polished or complex titles, instead carving out its own space through personality and unconventional design choices. For players who appreciate experimental storytelling and aren’t put off by its style of humor, it offers a memorable and often entertaining experience. For others, its reliance on that same humor may limit its overall appeal. Rating: 7/10
Really funny. get out of jail then space clowns?? lol then get to main city and its like open world quests. and its correct, only the strong survive waffle shack lol
This is my bros game and it reminds me of a classic JRPG mixed with the new South Park RPG games. It is very funny and the combat is your basic JRPG turn based style. Support independent anti woke game makers and give this a shot!
Could be game of the year
A short but unforgettable JRPG that clearly comes from a place of passion. The gameplay sticks to classic turn-based combat, but the humor and weirdness set it apart. The game constantly throws unexpected moments at you, from bizarre characters to over-the-top quests. For the price, it’s more than worth it. Definitely something unique in today’s gaming scene!
This game is hilarious! If you like turn-based RPGs and some dirty humor, youll love it, it will have you chuckling all the way thru. Im only a few hours in, its well worth the price. They need more games like this.
Funny ass game, gotta catch all the hood rats! XD
This game is absolutely unhinged in the best way possible. If you’re into dark humor and RPGs, this is a perfect mix. The dialogue and items are so outlandish that you’d never see anything like this in a mainstream release. Indie devs aren’t afraid to take risks, and it shows. The opening cutscene had me cracking up, and I knew I had to keep playing. Can’t wait to sink more time into it when I get the chance!
This game is crazy and out of pocket, loved it!
