It's everything I found in bugs, I hope it helps a little with the development because I really liked what I saw and I would like to see it complete, sorry for putting it in Spanish but there was no review in my language and I wanted to guide a little, thank you very much.
Holt is a badly made 2D retro pixel adventure platformer that's been slapped together with the godawful GameMaker Studio video game construction kit from Yoyogames. There's a sci-fi theme and the developers put a lot of work into making the game look bad based on the extensive effort that went into the terrible, obsolete pixel "art" visuals. The game is in Early Access and is more of a demo than a full game. The game hasn't been updated in almost 3 months which shows signs it's already in Development Hell, and may never leave the Early Access program. There's a slew of design and technical problems with the demo that prevent me from recommending it. Ecit: The developer has abandoned the game and even gone on to work on other projects, and is simply abusing Steam Early Access. First of all, PC gamers will be immediately insulted by a demand from the developer that a console peasant children's toy gamepad is used. This is simply unacceptable when PC gamers all have a KB+M they can use. Do we look like console peasants to Void Hook Studios? Apparently we do. Also, the control scheme is a complete mess, so it looks like not only did the people at Void Hook Studios never see a keyboard before, they never saw a console peasant children's toy gamepad before either. So what are they doing developing video games if they don't know how video games are supposed to work? It's a mystery. They chose to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Resolution and controls are locked, so there's no way for the end user to try improve the very poor quality experience from this construction kit effort. These flaws push this game far below minimum acceptable standards for PC. GameMaker Studio is a very poor quality game construction kit, and unsurprisingly results in products that have little to no value as games, especially when compared to the work of professional developers who create genuine products for gamers. Using a video game construction kit requires little to no talent or skill as a game developer. Very often, GameMaker Studio is used to make shovelware and lazy cash grabs, although in this case the game is temporarily free. The developers have indicated they intend to later charge money for mucking around with templates and things in GameMaker Studio.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer offers a pointless and trite response that addresses none of the serious problems here. But, coming back to this review as a result, we can see the developer hasn't touched the game since, it's now around 1 year since any notable updates and can be considered formally abandoned. The developer also released an entire other game while this is still in Early Access, so they're abusing Valve's Early Access program at the cost of gamers. This is unacceptable and the developers lack of ethics here are highlighted by this pointless response. I've edited my review to reflect the game is abandoned and will never be complete.
pretty good movement mechanics but the game is not compatible for pc pls fix
Played on Ubuntu 18.04 with Proton 6 and didn't experience any problems. The game is pretty fun and has a lot of potential! Although it's only early access, if development continues with this level of quality, it will be a pretty good game! It's currently quite short, but that's not a complaint for an early access game that currently doesn't cost anything. It does need some fixes for a few spelling/grammar (english) issues and a couple of technical issues, but nothing game-breaking that I saw. It's easy to overlook those since the story is promising, and the play is fun. As another reviewer pointed out, the axe-jump is fun, although I am not sure if it was intended to work like that since it allows infinite wall-climb if timed right. It's oddly satisfying. Even if it wasn't intended, I do hope it's retained in updates.
