HIVE: Altenum Wars was an attempt at making a console ported PvP only 2.5D platformer/arena shooter (not even an FPS). Gameplay consisted of running about various, painfully generic, asset flip looking platform arenas with a "variable gravity" gimmick, and shooting other players, if there were any. It failed. The game peaked at only ~9 players at launch, not even enough to fill one of the painfully generic maps. In desperation, the developers gave the game away for free, which caused a momentary spike of almost 500 players... who immediately abandoned the game and didn't return. Game keys were sold off in bulk to IndieGala, but this didn't result in any interest from gamers. A last ditch effort was made in early 2019, another round of key giveaways, resulting in a peak of just under 600 players, who once more abandoned the game and didn't return. The developers abandoned the game less than a year after launching, an understandable response to seeing their game flop. Player counts are negligible, roughly one or two per week, card idling and not actually playing the game. Why did it fail? It's video game autopsy time! First up the game visuals are terrible, the overall quality here is lacklustre. PvP gamers have literally thousands of games to choose from, hundreds of AAA games that are either free or cost next to nothing. Games have to actually offer something if they want to compete for players time. It's unclear why the developers decided 2D platformer shooters... a game format that's largely obsolete since the invention of mainstream 3D graphics, would be a viable business model. Many compromises were made to the game to make it work on console peasant gaming appliances like the Playstation 4. These are compromises that PC gamers should never have to put up with, and contributed to general rejection of the game. The developers made the fatal, lazy mistake of believing that PvP, other players, would be an acceptable substitute for doing the difficult job of adding single player level design, storytelling, NPCs and other rich aspects of designed game content to the game. As a result of this choice by the developers, the game has little to no actual interactive game content. It's a little considered fact that the vast majority of PvP only, multiplayer only games fail. Developers must learn that other players are not an acceptable subsititue for doing the job of game developers and building a game filled with content. PvP only games must have a huge player base for them to "go viral" and succeed. But with no single player experience to add lasting value to a game, the developers instead chose to bet against all odds that their game would "go viral" without any actual reason for players to want to play the game. Predictably, they lost this bet. Finally there's a side note about monetisation. Wisely, the developers opted not to use nasty MTX in the game, knowing that gamers despise that. However, they decided to charge up front for the game, which discouraged most gamers (although we also know despite giving away free keys, gamers still weren't interested). Gamers have access to literally hundreds of free to play PvP games, and they will choose the best of those before paying up front for a game. So how are PvP developers supposed to get paid for stamping out yet another empty, contentless PvP arena with no players? I don't have an answer, but I feel it should fall somewhere along the lines of making products with actual content that's attractive to gamers, instead of hoping other people will make their game go "viral"... somehow.
