Despite the good rendering of light, the Bioshock-like aesthetics and the dark atmosphere, it's not a good game. Gameplay is bad. You don't know what to do, you cannot understand what's happening; environmental puzzles are not compelling but frustrating. Too many documents and writings to read and memorize. There is a guy that everytime come from nowhere and gives you a lot of tips through messages, and despite the many tips it's very hard to progress. Some messages get stuck into the furnitures and you cannot read them! I went in to the electricity room and messed with some fuses, but sincerely I can't understand what I did! After that, the fuses disappeared! Bah! I randomly entered some doors with weird symbols and something happened, but I don't know precisely what and why! Was it me doing something right or was it the game? Bah! The inventory is badly implemented, a sort of clunky bulky belt hindering visual and movements. You are supposed to acces a sort of safe room by smoking some cigarettes. After two hours I cannot understand how to store cigarettes in the holder, where to find the holder, how to open the holder, how to access or where to find the lighter. I entered a weird room with a (dead?) woman stuck in the wall, the room had no exit, I couldn't understand what to do; the cigarettes holder materialized in my hands from nowhere: Was I meant to access the safe room by smoking cigarettes? As I said I cannot do it, so I was forced to quit the game! You have virtual hands but they are badly implemented, collecting or interacting with items and documents is painful and frustrating. Every 10 minutes you die and respawn. That's no novelty, see the Outer Wilds. Sincerely I cannot stand such mechanic; maybe it's just me, you might like it. The moment of death is announced by earthquakes. Then it gets dark and you're killed by some kind of monster or ghost, but you cannot see what killed you. When you respawn you can see the photos of the monsters or ghosts that killed you! Weird! You're supposed to use a lamp to search in the dark, but it's very bulky and clunky and you cannot store it in the inventory. There is a story, told through 3D static and stylized characters talking in empty rooms. But it didn't catch me. Sometimes the walls or doors or rooms of the hotel are changing; it reminded me of Layers of Fear, but we are very far from the good quality of the Bloober Team's title (the flat version, not the vr version). I cannot understand why developers made it in VR. I can feel no sense of wonder or depth or immersion despite the good aesthetics and rendering of light. The visual is too foggy in my opinion. The only good thing other than rendering of light, Bioshock aesthetics and atmosphere, it is the diapason mechanic; I liked to put it in vibration by hitting walls or furnitures. End of the story, after 2 hours I'm bored and frustrated by the repetitive and abstruse experience, no willing to play it again! Developers have good technical skills, but they failed the gameplay and the design; narrative is just on the background and doesn't help.
Most boring vr game i have ever played. 50 minuets of walking aimlessly up and down the same corridor with no idea what to do or where to go. Occasionally dying for no apparent reason and been jump scared by touching inanimate objects while trying to figure out what the hell i'm doing here. I will be refunding this game.
This game is garbage. And I really wanted to like this one as I love escape horror games. Sure, this game is badly optimised, but the issue is mostly the gameplay to me. It's repetitive, slow, buggy, counter-intuitive, boring, frustrating, messy, not creative, and I could go on for a while. The story is ok, but there's just way too much to it, I had fun on the first 3 hours, but after that, it was the same thing again and again...
Accidentally stumbled upon an the quick alternative ending, which then ruins my save file and locks me out of the extra content from the main ending. A great reward for suffering through a playthrough filled with bugs, performance issues, janky controls and unintuitive gameplay mechanics.
Boy, I don't know why this game looks so good, has a cool story but sucks so hard. I played few hours till I got to the point where I really didn't wanted to invest any more minutes in this ♥♥♥♥. All you do is running through that maze, the maze and the maze again, facing radomly placed enemys you can't fight, you can't run out and mostly you can't even spot before they just kill you. They seriously should have spend a little more time to give this a good gameplay instead. Shame, I wanted to like it.
-------------- I am reviewing this game only now because when I was given the key to play it in preview it had many problems, bugs and it was not well optimized but I immediately understood its potential and I preferred to wait for the developers to fix it to be able to appreciate it to the fullest. of its potential. After some time since its release, Hinge has finally managed to deliver the result I had so much hoped for, an investigative horror that keeps the player constantly in tension, surrounded by ghosts and chills that continually run down his spine. Graphically, the developers have done an incredible job, especially with the play of light and shadow which are then fundamental elements to give the player the claustrophobic and oppressive feeling that characterizes this game. The interaction with the world is somewhat reduced, it is not possible to freely interact with everything around you but Hinge is a game that does not want to amaze with its physics, but wants to tell a story, let you experience it firsthand. and make sure that the player can proceed with fear of opening every door and peeking from every angle and he succeeds very well. For anyone who had played it on its release, I know perfectly well all the problems this game suffered from but now it's time to give it a second chance and I assure you you won't regret it.
The developers have worked hard to make a really intimidating storyline with puzzles. Instead of adding silly and ridiculous screamers like most other games do ;)
Interesting Lovecraft inspired light-horror puzzle/detective game. With "The Music of Erich Zahn" being one of the Lovecraft stories etched in my mind, this game resonated well with me via the usage of music. There's other influences, but regardless of the Lovecraft references, it is a fine experience on its own. I had a few frustrations with how the story/paths progress without warning; it seems to demand you to play it multiple times if you have a curious mind, but I could not get myself to do a replay, sadly.
Hinge? А может Cringe?
Constant death in the maze no way to get past it. This game is no fun to play. Regret buying it.
