About
Pick a direction and head out. Forests, swamps, mountains, deserts, tundras, coastlines, ruins, settlements, strange landmarks and worse things wait beyond the edge of what you know.
In HEXCRAWL, every step moves time forward. Terrain can slow you down. Weather can turn ugly. Food runs low. Your pack fills up. Eventually, every expedition reaches the same question: turn back with what you have, or keep going and see what else is out there?
Sometimes the next hex is empty.
Sometimes it isn't.
Random encounters can bring monsters, travelers, merchants, ambushes, oddities and opportunities. Some are worth fighting through. Some are worth talking through. Some are a good reason to leave.
Ports open the way to harsher country as you travel. Mark a ruin you are not ready for and come back later. Clear a zone and you can raise a Bastion there — a foothold before the next push outward.
Scattered across the world are caves, temples, forts, tombs, shipwrecks, ruins and other places you can enter and explore. These Delves shift the game from overland travel to room-by-room exploration — traps, hidden passages, darkness, loot, and whatever has taken up residence inside.
Move carefully. Light matters. Foes can notice you before you notice them.
Combat is turn-based, quick and dangerous. Enemies range from common wilderness threats to rare monsters, regional bosses, dragons and other creatures that can badly punish an adventurer who wandered into the wrong place too early.
And you can absolutely wander into the wrong place too early.
HEXCRAWL has no traditional character levels, and enemies do not scale themselves to match you. Your strength comes from equipment, Masteries and learning what keeps you alive. A weapon that seemed valuable yesterday may become dead weight tomorrow. A strange relic can change the way you approach a fight. Limited inventory space means you will not be carrying everything home.
Craft at settlements. Learn recipes from trainers, tomes and what you find in the wild. Track quests, beasts and discoveries in your Journal. Choose a Calling — Fighter, Practitioner, Hunter, or Sneak — as a starting kit, not a class you are locked into forever.
Find a road and follow it. Cross a mountain range just to see what is on the other side. Hunt a boss because you want what it is carrying. Get lost. Run out of food. Make it home with something you had no business finding.
Then head out again to explore further — one hex at a time.
This is Early Access. The map keeps opening ahead, and the game continues to grow.

As a crusty old fart grognard, this certainly scratches that BECMI itch. There isnt an overarching *reason* really emphasized for all of your exploring: you are doing it because you can and its fun. Combat is based on dice rolls, and enemies are varied and suited to the terrain you are exploring. Definitely looking forward to see where the devs take this, and would certainly advise those that like a simple exploring game that has combat, crafting and dungeon delving to get this. Its very playable so far in early access
So much atmosphere in such a neat format.

As other reviewers have said, Hexcrawl is a good solid throw-back style game reminiscent of the very early days of the hobby. Not much (or any?) story or plot, just exploration/combat/loot. Simple mechanics, simple slot-based inventory, very much an OSR vibe.
It scratches the old school D&D itch for me. Exploration and Delves are a lot of fun.
This is the story of how your character died. I find it ironic that in my time with this game, my first run has been my most successful run. This is exactly what the title says it is, a hex crawl. Something like the old school game Barbarian or the more modern. western themed The Drifter. Each hex you land on something may happen. Maybe an encounter with enemies, maybe you come across a broken fence, or a travelling merchant with rare gear. In towns and camps you can pick up quests, then head out and clear some dungeons. Combat is quick and deadly. A miss or two on your end and a critical hit from the enemy and you can go from totally fine, to the title screen. I find myself enjoying playing on hardest difficulty, which basically means you have 1 life and you can only save your game in safe havens. There is no leveling system, instead you are using the gear gained from enemies and rare merchants to increase your effectiveness and survivability. I like that randomness of the game. I like what is already in place and I am excited to see what gets added in the future.
Very enjoyable game. Love the art, its black and white done really well, not often will I buy into an EA game, but was having so much fun in the demo, I just had to.
Great basic D&D style game. Even though it is not fancy, it scratches the itch of exploration, loot whoring, and not being too easy with the dice sometimes being brutal. It is great to feel stronger from loot and mastery which you get through buying or using skills, so you can go back and kill that baddie that made you run earlier. Found some bugs but dev is already working on them and responds quickly in the game discussion boards. If you are looking for something to tide you over until the next big dungeon crawler, this is a place you can lose yourself for a while.
Nice game may be too difficult in Marked mode and too easy in Mercy mode : balance ?
