HOBL2 is a cross between Heroes of Might and Magic and a dungeon crawler. Compared to HOBL1, there are more classes and they're more balanced (No archetypes, pick from 3 sub-classes, and you can't buy skillbooks). Level/enemy scaling is a bit better, high level enemies don't have as absurd HP, though neither do you. Dungeons are more interesting; both better looking and having more objects to interact with (lights/torches that can be turned on and off, coins and books on shelves, gear upgrade anvils, etc.) The biggest difference so far is that enemies don't spawn out of dungeons and invade (at least that I've seen, 48 hours in). There's no "fame" and I'm not sure if there's any scaling difficulty with in-game time passage, only distance from your hometown. Some gear has heavy stat requirements, and all physical (str/end for armor, str/agi for weapons), so it's difficult to build mages to do much damage without gratuitous turn/potion spamming, though they're still useful for attacks that aren't affected by defense or retaliation (counter/elemental shields). They can also still do decent melee damage when equipped with an elemental weapon of a type they have a bonus for. In general compared to HOBL1, it's good to have a mix of classes as opposed to just wizard supremacy (also for passive group buffs that don't stack). The only real downside that the UI is currently jank and some mechanics aren't well explained ingame (some skills have not enough tooltip info, gear isn't as intuitive as it could be from naming conventions), but the dev is active and fixing/improving things. Overall good and a bit less repetitive than HOBL1.
Big time improvement on graphics, same style of music as the first, implements a new class (job) system. Character portraits are fun to mess around with and have a unique look, and the UI is a sharp, bright blue crystal, fitting into the theme of the game. Definitely worth grabbing in this state as it is fully playable, and will only become better as the developer keeps polishing it off for a full release.
6 years and this is all the game is so far? hard pass. It is obvious it will never be complete. Bare bones and half baked. Whats with the audio? Just sound bytes on repeat. Just horrible
The game is in great condition! It has a cool vibe visually. And the play from the first game is there. There is a ton of content. So much that I recommend playing on a smaller map and upping the XP rate to speed things up.
Super fun game that hasn't gotten the love it deserves. I hope the dev keeps working on it!
Sweet game, lots of hours to explore, i like it.
it's meh
This is a really fun game, I've played on and off over the years and seen improvements and commitment from the dev that continue to improve on it's quality and overall enjoyment. It's worth giving it a play and seems much nearer now to completion with the most recent changes all being pretty positive.
Game is buggy as hell. In the first dungeon I got -1 (munus one!) skill / stat points while leveling up a hero. And there is no way to exit the party meny until all the points are invested. Alt + F4 and delete the game.
