Pretty good, not as good as Alpha 1, but still better than the final game we ended up getting, the extra stuff they added really makes this game feeling more alive compared to Alpha 1, 9/10 highly recommend!

it so cool
Hello Neighbor Alpha 2 is a free stealth horror game where we sneak into our neighbor's house and try to find out what he is hiding in his basement. This version is basically an early look at what would eventually become Act 1 of the full Hello Neighbor, so the house, puzzles and mechanics are a little different from the finished game. The best part is the sneaking. We have to work out how to get into the house without getting caught, and there are different ways we can approach the same problem. We can climb through windows, move objects around and use things in the environment to reach places that would normally be out of reach. The Neighbor is supposed to learn from what we do, which is one of the most interesting ideas in the game. If we keep using the same route, he can start placing things like traps or cameras there. It gives us a reason to change our approach instead of doing the exact same thing every time. It does not always feel completely consistent, but when it works it makes the stealth much more interesting. The house is also fun to explore because there are lots of strange objects and hidden areas. We can pick things up, throw them around and experiment with the environment to work out how different puzzles can be solved. Some of the solutions feel quite clever, while others are more about randomly trying things until something works. The visual style is another thing that works well. Everything has a colourful cartoon look, which makes the game feel less like traditional horror and more like a strange mystery. The house itself is full of weird details, and the contrast between the bright visuals and the creepy idea behind the game gives it a lot of personality. The biggest problem is that Alpha 2 can be quite rough. The AI does not always behave as intelligently as the idea suggests, and there are moments where getting caught feels more random than deserved. Some of the puzzles can also be confusing because the game does not always make it clear what we are supposed to do next. The other issue is that it is an early version, so it does not have the amount of content or polish of a finished game. That is also part of why it is interesting, because we get to see an earlier version of the concept, but it means there are plenty of rough edges and ideas that were later changed or removed. Overall, Hello Neighbor Alpha 2 is a fun piece of the game's development and still works as a little stealth puzzle game on its own. The house is enjoyable to explore, the environmental interaction is good and the idea of the Neighbor adapting to our actions is interesting. The inconsistent AI, confusing puzzles and unfinished feeling stop it from being something we would rate extremely highly, but there is enough here to make it worth playing. Rating: 7.6/10
