A fun, charming classic. Having both an English translation of Hebereke and a Japanese translation of Ufouria is wild. The emulation could stand to have a couple more options, I think I ran into a lot of screen tearing on a 144 Hz display instead of 60. It would be difficult to have a more complete experience of Hebereke/Ufouria than this.
I Hebereke Enjoyed. Kind of a Zelda-lite, half 2d platformer, half x-vania, half adventure, half frustrating game. It's 200% madness.
Nice little NES platformer with plenty of charm to boot. The extra features really add to the experience, especially seeing the differences in the story between the original and the localised version.
This is a remarkably fun little hidden gem of a game. Probably the best "metroidvania" style game I've played on the NES. It is geared more for younger audiences, with the cute mascot style graphics, and generally overall ease of gameplay, but that doesn't take away from the game's solid design all around. The map is pretty good to explore, the power-ups you receive in order to progress - largely in gaining extra characters you can swap to, but sometimes other accessories to help you out - do a good job of opening up more of the map. There may be some potential to cheese a few places, but overall it seems to be solidly designed against that. This game wasn't entirely unknown outside of Japan. It had an international release under "U-Four-ia: The Saga" - and has a sequel based on that name here on Steam. This release, however, only contains the original Japanese ROM. Which is untranslated during play. However, the game uses the emulator itself to unlock translations as you play, in a separate menu. It is annoying that you have to go to that separate menu to see the translations (and it's interesting that it also includes Japanese translations for the U-Four-ia version, to highlight the differences between the two), and they only "unlock" once. So once you have them, you don't get a notification as to which one is which again on replays. Honestly, I am torn on this decision. On one hand, I do wish it had the English version, on the other I think the Japanese version is much better overall. Giving the characters a little more personality and humor. Though I think something that put a translation on screen rather than in another menu would have been better. I also noticed a good deal of slowdown while playing, not all of it seems to be linked to the NES game itself. I do not know if this was caused by something on my end, or if the emulator they're using has some memory leaks. But it happened to me, so be aware of it. The game does include some emulator features, such as quick save and load, or rewind, and those can be disabled in a challenge mode with a leaderboard. Don't pass this game up. It really is a lot of fun, and I'm glad to see it starting to get the attention it deserved.
Pure joy. Glad I read Retro Gamer.
It really pains me to write this review. I still consider Hebereke/Ufouria to be my favorite NES/Famicom game. Yes, even above mammoths like SMB3, Kirby's Adventure, DuckTales, and yeah I'd easily take it over Gimmick! if I'm being quiet honest. But I can't recommend this version for a number of reasons: 1. You're getting the raw Japanese Hebereke. Not Ufouria, Hebereke. I would think a modern emulation port of Hebereke should include both games. 8-bit Nintendo rom files are not that big. In lieu of a real in-game translation, you get option to view text boxes on another interface, either as they appeared in Ufouria or a rather rough and unpolished translation of the Hebereke text. This weird "translation screen" approach really doesn't work. 2. The extra features aren't really writing home about. There's _some_ art and a speedrun mode, but if you're hoping for more historic details on Sunsoft's mascot and/or this game (which, as indicated by unused graphic files in a prototype for Ufouria, might have actually began life as "Ufouria" and not "Hebereke"). The "museum" aspect could have used more work. I have no interest in speedrunning, so I have no idea how that holds up. 3. While I know that this game was licensed out to City Connection by way Sunsoft, whose parent company SUN Corporation is bankrolling an Israelli-based security company called Cellebrite that is equipping both ICE and the IDF with surveillance equipment, I can't in good conscience recommend any product that, in any shape or form, supports any form of fascism. I will never support Sunsoft, or any company that is willing to do business with them and can easily sleep at night. Just download the ROM, don't support these monsters. If you want to experience Hebereke in English, the English patch by Rahan and Rachel is still the best way to experience it. You don't have to pay death merchants to play this game.
pretty good port. the translated pages thing isn't very convenient, but the game is still here and is very fun
