This year we marked the 25th anniversary of Havok Physics. And we celebrated the usual way… by creating a new tech showcase!
Thanks to Havok Physics for Unreal we were able to make a great-looking level that showcases the power of Havok Physics running in the Unreal Engine.
This showcase proved so popular at our industry meetings that we decided it should have a wider audience.

Crazy amount of balloons looks pretty cool.
a truly eye opening experience. personally I would have hoped for some softbodies. because they're balloons. softballoons. why are they called rigidbodies if they're rigidballoons? they don't have bodies. they're balloons.
Super chilled vibes, I don't think I'll ever get sick of blasting balloons around! I can't wait to see this tech in other titles. Bravo! Looking for recommendations on other laid back demos or games like this?

This is actually really cool to see. I wish there was a toggle to disable despawning and a entity count as like a benchmark. At first I was kind of like, "you got a lot of objects... So what?" But then I blasted a bunch into each other and saw how they were interacting in the tubes and I realized that I can't remember the last time I saw so many objects INTERACTING with each other. I've messed around in a lot of sandbox games and in Unity and the moment you get more than like 50 basic cubes in a piles, most engines can't handle it. This is really impressive stuff to see and I wish sandbox games took physics more seriously. Don't get me wrong. If your game doesn't need it, it doesn't need it, but there are so many games out there that are REALLY held back by their engines. This proves that the technology DOES exist, it's just a lot of devs don't want to use it. When I see a couple thousand balls get sweeped around in a wave caused by a bunch of explosions and no FPS drop, I'm impressed and this demo shows me it's possible.
Havoc Balloons Tech Showcase is a brief but very impressive (& free) 3D technology demonstrator with huge - and I really do mean HUGE - numbers of reflective balloons and balls that can be released, pushed, shot, etc. I can't begin to guess the number of collisions, deflections, rotations etc that are being continuously calculated and graphically displayed with no stuttering. But what is most impressive for me is that my 3 years old computer is certainly not very high spec, and yet the GPU & its fan were much quieter in Havoc Balloons than in many games with far fewer moving objects - wonderful efficiency! There are a small number of easily obtained achievements.
Havok Balloons Tech Showcase: Fun Physics Toy, But a Total Flop as a GPU Benchmark! 6/10 Look, Steam peeps – I dove into Havok Balloons Tech Showcase thinking it'd be the perfect free tool to stress-test my new GPU. You know, spawn a bazillion balloons, crank up the chaos, and watch those frame rates tank for some real-world benchmarking vibes. Spoiler: It's NOT built for that at all, and I ended up more frustrated than enlightened. But hey, if you're just here for mindless balloon-popping fun, it might scratch that itch! But as a benchmark? Nah, forget it. No built-in tools to measure FPS consistently, no standardized tests, and performance swings wildly based on what you're doing. On my RTX 4080 rig, it chugged to 60-120 FPS with max balloons flying everywhere (heavy on CPU too, not just GPU). Spawn fewer? Butter-smooth 120+ FPS. It's great for showing off physics sims, but useless for proper GPU benchmarking – no loops, no metrics, just random mayhem. If you're a dev or tech nerd, cool for a quick peek at Havok's tech. For everyone else? Mild entertainment, but don't expect it to replace actual benchmarks like 3DMark or Cinebench
