Kind of fun. Unfortunately, I did encounter a bug in the last round, after talking to all and then telling the owl to wait a second that soft-locked the game
An surprisingly high-quality free visual novel. At its core, it’s a political game of elimination, reminiscent of a papal election in a conclave. You have to interact with rival candidates, plot against them, and try to stay afloat. On the canonical difficulty, winning their approval is no easy task—they're conspiring behind your back just as much as you are against them. The game features well-crafted lore, natural and lively dialogue, and great character design. It truly deserves a big-budget remake. It’s almost a shame that hidden gems like this are given away for free.
(I played a demo of Hare Apparent at ConnectiCon back in 2021.) Pros: + The characters are well-developed and likeable. Each contender has its own opinions and ideas about the conflicts in the world and how to address them. + There is a surprising amount of worldbuilding for a small game. I found myself quickly invested in the world of Under-Sky, its inhabitants and its conflicts. + The voting scenes add tension to Hare Apparent, and I enjoyed anticipating each contender’s ballot. + The voice clips are a good touch and add flavor to each character. + Even though the game is short (a full playthrough will take 15-30 minutes,) it has a considerable amount of replay value due to the variations in dialogue and choices. Some dialogue options appear in some playthroughs and not others, adding some unpredictability to the game. + The difficulty is fair (I played on the default difficulty level) and the four difficulty options add additional replay value to the game. It took me five playthroughs to win, and I got the “good ending.” Cons: - The game relies more on trial and error and less on strategy to win. After five playthroughs I didn’t notice any strategy other than to avoid allying to vote with other characters too often. Instead of winning through diplomacy and negotiation, I won just because I knew which choices yielded which results from when I clicked them before. I felt like a kid copying a friend’s homework; I was just inputting answers without understanding the process to get those answers. - The lack of music gives the game a hollow feeling. There is plenty of good-quality free stock music available online to use in video games and other projects, so there’s no excuse for not having any. - The backgrounds are awful. The teal and scarlet color scheme grew on me over time, but the backgrounds look very poor quality compared to the rest of the game’s art. The character art is simple, but effective. I like the characters' designs. Overall Score: 7 out of 10

A free , short and sweet game about becoming a king. Prince Rowan the hare may seem unremarkable compared to the princes and princesses of the other lands but he must succeed (for the sake of the Kingdom) in convincing them to vote for him in the Conclave. The game has a very nice worldbuilding , which is revealed through dialogues between the princes and the Owl , and also well written characters. Each day prince Rowan must listen to his opponents (those ears aren't for show) , prove his wisdom and basically convince them that someone else is more fitting for elimination. As quick as a playthrough may be the game manages to be thought provoking , and the various randomized elements , different difficulty settings and endings manage to make Hare Apparent a great and replayable hidden little gem.
This is a fun - albeit very short - dialogue based game. To be honest I can't say a lot about it without spoilers. So I'll just list off it's highs and lows. The Good: Well written characters with interesting dialogue and political perspectives. Challenging to win on the recommended difficulty and will likely require you to play through a couple of times before you win, but the more you try the more you learn about the individual characters, the world you all inhabit, and what will work to win them over. The Bad: There is an uncomfortable lack of sound in the game. Save for the short voice acted lines and the sound of rushing wind in a snowstorm the game is completely silent; which could work for a certain brand of game, but not for this one. My only other complaint is that I personally didn't find any of the endings satisfying. (I didn't find all of the endings, but I'm fairly certain I found most and of the ones I found none of them felt like much of a reward...) My conclusion: If you like political dialogue game play and are more of a play it for the game kind of person rather than a play it for the ending kind, I would recommend this game. It's free after all, and overall was a pretty fun use of about two hours of my life.
very good game wish it was more known
This would work great as a survivor cbs game. As it is now I very much enjoy it. But It is fairly easy to memorize the right things to say and cheese through the game. Please make another one and add more people. This is an awesome experiment.
Fun politics game. Good lore.
Fun game, and easily played in an hour so there's little reason not to try it. The writing is quite good. The world-building is good and the characters are all interesting, and this is done with fairly little dialogue. It falls a little flat in the area of difficulty- on even the second-hardest difficulty its winnable without much finesse, while the hardest difficulty is seemingly impossible. But still recommended for the writing and atmosphere.
