Very FUN Game! It is silly to play and not very Hard, but not crazy easy!
HardAF, developed by HardBox Games and published by IndieArk, is a brutally challenging 2D precision platformer that pushes players to their limits with its demanding gameplay and clever design. The game’s defining feature is its unique approach to exploration and learning—players start each level shrouded in darkness, with only the area immediately around their character visible. This darkness means that every failure is not just a setback but an opportunity to gradually illuminate the path ahead, transforming death into a valuable learning tool. This mechanic forces players to rely heavily on memory and sharp reflexes as they slowly piece together the layout of each treacherous stage, making progression feel hard-earned and deeply satisfying. The game is structured into six chapters comprising more than sixty meticulously designed levels, each filled with deadly traps, precise jumps, and tricky platforming challenges. The levels escalate in difficulty at a steady, unforgiving pace, ensuring that players must constantly refine their skills to advance. Each chapter culminates in a boss battle that tests not only the player's mastery of the mechanics but also their ability to adapt to new patterns and threats. This combination of relentless platforming and memorable boss fights helps keep the gameplay fresh and engaging throughout the experience. One of the standout elements of HardAF is its tight and responsive control scheme. The developers have clearly put effort into making sure every jump, dash, and movement feels precise and fair, which is crucial in a game where even the smallest mistake can mean death. This precision control, combined with the level design, encourages players to develop muscle memory and timing, creating a rewarding feedback loop that motivates repeated attempts. Additionally, the inclusion of a level editor greatly expands the game’s lifespan, empowering players to design and share their own punishing stages. This user-generated content has the potential to keep the community active and the challenge fresh well beyond the base game. HardAF also caters to multiplayer fans by offering a local shared-screen mode that supports two to four players. This mode adds a competitive twist to the platforming formula, as friends race head-to-head to complete levels first or rack up the most progress. The chaotic and intense multiplayer matches contrast nicely with the solo experience, providing a fun way to test skills against others in real time. Beyond local play, global leaderboards create an additional layer of competition for those who want to prove their prowess by clocking the fastest completion times and climbing the ranks. Visually, HardAF embraces a minimalist pixel art aesthetic with a dark and moody color palette that complements the game’s theme of exploration through darkness. The sparse visuals focus attention on gameplay and level design rather than flashy effects, while still maintaining a distinct style. The atmospheric soundtrack, composed by Daniel Teles, is a strong accompaniment to the gameplay—its energetic and intense tracks drive players forward, heightening the sense of urgency and reward. The audio and visual design work hand in hand to create an immersive experience that keeps players engaged through each difficult jump and narrow escape. While the difficulty of HardAF may not appeal to everyone—its unforgiving nature demands patience and persistence—those who thrive on tough platformers and the satisfaction of overcoming steep challenges will find a deeply rewarding experience here. The game’s innovative mechanics, coupled with solid level design, responsive controls, and multiplayer features, make it a standout title for anyone interested in the genre. Whether tackling the punishing solo campaign or battling friends in local multiplayer, HardAF delivers a relentless and exhilarating platforming adventure that tests skill, determination, and adaptability. Super Meat Boy / I Wanna Be the Boshy / Celeste) 😎
It's like the game Ink and Super Meat Boy had a neglected child they keep in the dark all day long. Highly recommended. I would like to add something now that I got 100% achievements in the game... the level editor is super dope and it adds a lot of extra fun to do after completing the main campaign. It took me around 4 hours to finish it all, but keep in mind that one of my favorite genres is precision platforming, so normal gamers will probably get more time out of it.
This is definitely aimed at the more hardcore/precise platformer/parkour fan (think Meatboy, Celeste, Mario Maker), and man does it deliver. The unique idea of not actually seeing the map until you've covered it with your own blood is awesome, and actually plays into each level really well. It's hard to describe, but that feeling of dread/anticipation when you're first making it through a level unscathed before finally hitting a spinning blade or crusher is intense. Streamers/YouTubers fear not, as there are additional color palette options in case you're worried about a strike or demonetization for blood on-screen! Fortunately, even the "harder" levels become more familiar as you work through your typical trial and error of hitting that tiny gap, catching a small landing area, and so on. You also have the chance to hit a virtual jackpot at the end of each level, and rewards are typically in the form of some fun, but temporary cosmetics that you can earn more of as you play through each season. I have a little more time than my review shows, since I played all the available levels on the demo a couple times before buying, but I've made it through the first "season" (chapter/world of 10 levels) plus a few, and even the longest attempts only took me maybe 5-6 minutes. Having a level creator/customs similar to Mario Maker is also a great way to ensure there's tons of content once you've made it through the main game as well, and multiplayer also gives you the chance to enjoy this with someone else. Another review mentioned giving the demo a try before you buy, and I strongly agree with that so you know if this game is right for you. Still, at only $8, any purchase is a safe bet and a great way to support an indie developer even if you don't quite find your jam in this one right away. Definitely give this game a try or gift it to someone you know who loves indie platformers!
Solid game, very very addicting 10/10. Unique gameplay encapsulates you to just continue, and if you’re into speedrunning especially it’s so exhilerating to whittle away your best times over and over again. This game is fun as a casual game for more experienced gamers at platformer, but can also easily turn into a challenge when going for perfection.
Who knew dying could be so fun? This surprisingly upbeat game encourages you to perish in new and exciting ways to complete each level. Old school gamers will likely feel a bit of nostalgia with this innovative side scroller, complete with retro-inspired graphic story line. Think Mario meets Squid Games (but with a lot less anxiety.) This is definitely a "speakers on" game as the sound track adds a light-hearted energy to the experience. Hard AF is a refreshing take on a side scrolling adventure that is definitely worth a play through!
