Grim Horde is a fast little roguelite where I get to play the villain for once. Instead of trying to save villages from monsters, I am the one sending monsters into villages and tearing everything apart. I control a Grim Lord and build up an army of different minions while travelling through procedurally generated areas. The basic idea is pretty simple, but I like the change of perspective. I am not protecting a kingdom or looking for treasure. I am trying to become powerful enough to completely overwhelm the mortal world. The main thing I enjoy is building up the army. I can summon different creatures through portal towers and gradually put together a group that can deal with larger groups of enemies. I also collect souls from the people I defeat, which can then be used to improve my power and strengthen my abilities. This gives the runs a nice feeling of constantly getting stronger. I like starting with a relatively weak army and watching it turn into a huge group that can clear through areas much more easily. The roguelite progression works well with this too. When I eventually die, I can use what I earned to improve my future attempts and learn new summoning spells. That means a failed run still gives me something useful to work towards. The maps are procedurally generated, so I am not simply following one fixed route every time either. There is also an endless mode, different Grim Lords and a Minionpedia that gives me information about the creatures. I think these systems give the game enough structure to make repeated runs worthwhile for a while. The biggest problem for me is that the game feels much smaller than the concept suggests. I like the idea of commanding an army of monsters, but the actual strategic side is fairly straightforward. A lot of the time I am moving around, collecting souls, summoning minions and watching them deal with enemies. That can be satisfying, especially when the army gets large, but there is not always enough decision making involved to keep me thinking deeply about every encounter. It has more strategy than a completely mindless arcade game, but I would have liked more variety in how I could build and control my forces. The other issue is the unfinished feeling. Grim Horde originally launched in Early Access with plans for more Grim Lords, minions, exploration, threats and progression, but development did not continue as originally planned. The developers later explained that the project had reached a point where they could no longer continue development, so I have to judge the game as the smaller experience that actually exists rather than the much larger version that was originally planned. That does hurt it for me because I can see the potential in the systems, but I also know there is not going to be a huge expansion of the idea. I still think the presentation suits the game nicely. The dark fantasy setting, top down view and pixel art give it a simple arcade feel, and there is something satisfying about watching a huge group of minions flood into a village. I also like that the game does not take itself too seriously. Being the Darklord and destroying mortal settlements gives the whole thing a fun sense of mischief, and the short runs make it easy for me to play without committing to a massive strategy campaign. Overall, Grim Horde is a fun but limited roguelite that has a good central idea. I enjoy summoning minions, collecting souls, upgrading my abilities and watching my army become more powerful during each run. The biggest problems are the limited strategic depth and the fact that development ended before the game could reach the larger scope that was planned. I think there is enough here to have some fun with, especially because the core game is free to play, but I cannot ignore how much potential was left unused. For me, it lands as a decent little arcade roguelite that is worth trying, but it does not have enough depth or content to reach the higher ratings. Rating: 7/10
