The game is not much of a RTS or strategy game, like it looks. The gameplay loopy just involves spam click spells, and gets quite repetitive. I do think the game needs more complexity to it to make it more interesting.
Very neat idea, I like the concept, but I'm not a fan of the slog. Some spells are WAYYYYYYYYYY better than others, like you pick the wrong one and you had might as well just restart because it isn't fun in an "experimental" way, it's just completely under-powered. It's also very repetitive right now, spamming the same spell and sometimes one of the other 2 or 3 spells you get over dozens of stages. You don't build units, sometimes you can create spawners that will make units but it's mainly just your spells. With balancing updates, more interactivity, and maybe an adjustment to how many spells you get, then it will be a bit more playable.
Game is unplayable in windowed mode due to strange resolution issues. I had hopes that this was something simple that could be patched, but then I was hit with: "Well windowed mode was never meant to be used - it is not a tested feature." I have read some baffling statements from developers in my time, but this is truly new to me. An unfortunate reminder that games purchased outside Steam can't be refunded. Hopefully this can be a warning to those looking into the game due to its inclusion in a current (at the time of this writing) Fanatical bundle.
Gods Against Machines is another gem for me this year. Playing through each of the four factions, I racked up 15 hours of playtime, so you'll get roughly four hours fir each faction (on Normal). There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what this game is in the reviews, which makes sense, but I'd say it's Command & Conquer, but you can auto-build your troop-producing buildings with a right-click, and each will auto-build their respective unit for a length of time; beyond that, you have an arsenal of abilities--a primary elemental attach and 2+ powerful spells--selected a-la "pick one out of three" rewards. Once you get into the flow of the game, it become very fun and addicting. Combining WASD camera controls and certain powers as you click can feel devastatingly effective as you level entire armies in a single stroke. Once you learn the debuffs of the enemy, you learn effective methods to counter them, and due to the random nature of the game, generally find a good path forward that may be a unique experience from your regular playstyle. You must clear 40 levels, and there are various gameplay mechanics that force you to balance stopping at every level to collect rewards or to skip ahead to harder enemies to prevent the spread of Corruption, the game's timer mechanic. Corruption is done effectively; basically, you gain Corruption in each map as you play (unless you cleanse it) and that accumulates into the World Corruption pool. If that hits 100%, it's game over. Play well on each map and you can collect a lot of rewards, of which only the Gaia powerups carry over. This is my main pain point with the title as, once I came back to an element I had already completed, I found the elemental abilities had reset completely. I'm now at ~16 hours and feel that was well-spent but, attempting to convince myself the meager Gaia points alone will be worth my playtime, I decided to write this review instead. I understand the need of this mechanic as the game currently sits, but I was hoping you would cease to receive rewards in Normal once you beat it on a certain element, and would need to progress to the next tier of difficulty to continue receiving permanent rewards. The Gaia abilities are fine, but they're more like buffs (they lack acute interest), and it will take me roughly 4-8 hours of playtime to get my spider buildings to produce 1 spider every 24 seconds to 1 spider every 14 seconds (and that effect alone to carry over), and I just can't rationalize that compared to the other abilities carrying over, as well. Still, incredibly worth it! The game is a value even at full price, does so much right, and I recommend it to anyone interested (there's a free demo if you're somehow on the fence). And there is a Continue mode after you complete a run, so if you enjoy the build you have, you can keep on playing (this is likely what I'll eventually do). But to get here you must clear 40 levels prior and build your deck from there. I kind of wish there were a fully separate game mode (I'd even pay for DLC to further support the team) that allowed us to select ANY Rewards we've unlocked in the main game, at the highest level for each spell and buff, and use that in another run. It'd be neat if it allowed us to mix and match in this mode, selecting whatever powers and bonuses we want. The RNG of the main game if fun, but every good god game deserves to have the ability to build your own arsenal.
I like the game and the ideas it presents. there is a good amount of depth and replayability. where I can't recommend it is in the controls. there is an autocast but its annoying, slow, cumbersome, does more harm than good and only applies to your very first main ability. more often than not I would find that the autocast I thought was locked onto a building I wanted dead was instead just pounding the ground wasting my mana. this led to me turning the feature off entirely even though its basically required for your sanity and fingers. immediately I can think of several ways this could be done better. double click toggles autocast. pressing a specific key with the selected skill and cursor location locks the attack into that location until you press the key again. really anything besides hold down the mouse for 3 entire seconds and hope you got the target right. the first like 13 victories I just kept saying wtf over and over as I slowly learned what the game was about. the map is sprawling and the minimap lends you no hints about special bushes to destory or whatever is going on. only icons for you, the enemy and the special spirit building thing that spawns. the sprawling map would like to have you look around it for that nonsense when theres really nothing going on except maybe in later stages and with more upgrades, so doing this early on is almost entirely a waste of time, all time should be spent just clicking their corruption producing buildings over and over and over. the nature of the game is fairly automated but it demands so much clicking from the player, eventually I got a powerful build and was skipping whole stage ranges at a time, bit off more than I could chew eventually when I got to the buildings where you cant cast in their aoe. I want to play again but then I remember how much clicking I was doing. you can actually overcome the cooldown or supposed max speed of the autocast simply by clicking, this immediately renders the autocast null and void and basically forces you to click as fast as possible if you want the best result in this game. if you do wish to pursue this game I honestly recommend setting up some kind of auto clicker. it's a shame because nearly everything else I think is interesting about the game and wouldn't mind progressing with it and unlocking stuff but playing\controlling it is simply mind numbing endurance
Great idea, hampered by flat execution. What could be great strategy game, with long term planning and building, is reduced to essentially clicker or mobile game, that could be playing itself. Spell selection is underwhelming and has too many similarities between elements. Progression system is grind for +1% more of XYZ. RNG is make or break at beginning and pointless later on, since grinded resources can offset it. Meanwhile missions are all the same scheme, repeated over and over. Same units, same bosses, same buildings just with more HP. Game shows all it has at the start and has little later on to make it worthwhile.
XUnity.
Enjoyable game. This game has a pretty unique premise and maybe that's what I enjoy most about it: it's different to most stuff I played in the recent years. Somehow this reminds me of the golden age in the 90s, when new game concepts and whole genres were created. The devs keep supporting it and bring nice updates regularly. So bottom line: very nice indie game, really worth a look.
It's different and it's fun, but after a while it feels more like a chore than an enjoyable game. Buy on sale and play for a bit, but don't expect a masterpiece.
