Alright. Getting There is done and dusted. This is a very quick and to the point walking simulator with a couple minor fetch quests and a couple equally minor combat moments which resolve in a simple point and shoot once to kill your enemy sort of way. Mostly, however, this is a philosophical experience. So, let's talk a bit about that. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3276806144 There is a story duality here. On one hand, it's a story about our protagonist and the loss she felt after losing her partner to sickness years after a world ending apocalyptic event wherein dimensions collided, more or less. On the other hand, it's a story about the importance of being responsible in the face of curiosity and a desire to push the boundaries of our knowledge and the science derived from that. It basically takes a side on the question of whether or not you should do something just because you can do something. In so doing, it asks you to consider the ethics of science and research. Which is a fairly unique presentation for a game. There are numerous misspelled words in the first few areas. That seemed to be mostly cleaned up as the story progressed. Lauren's sexuality and relationship is tastefully written into the product page description but actually isn't really a factor in the game. Instead, it simply provides the reason for which she sets off on her journey after having basically lost everything. It's part of her identity, but is treated as it should be, which is simply as the relationship she shared with her partner. By normalizing her relationship as just a relationship, it serves to help illustrate that people are simply people. And I thought that was a pretty compelling way to handle things. There are four moments in the game where you have to make actual story altering decisions. And to get the most out of this game, you'll need to play it at least three times. Fortunately, each playthrough will take you no longer than a half hour, so I think that is doable and I plan to do so myself over the next couple days (as of the time of this writing). And I've now done so. The three distinct playthrough paths each provide a couple unique scenes and of course an ending that is unique to those decisions. It's nicely done. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3276879690 Although not a fast-paced game, it is broken up into several short chapters and four acts. Which creates a scenario where an otherwise slow game ends up actually having perfect pacing. The control scheme itself is unusual and I wonder why the developer opted to do this. Perfectly functional but weird. Movement is accomplished by holding down L1 on your mouse and direction is determined by mouse movement. Shift is run as it would typically be. The interact/action key is actually C, and the row of shift/Z/X/C makes up the bulk of controls with Z aiming your gun and X firing it. Esc takes you to the menu as it should where Q actually allows you to exit the game. So, as you can see, non-standard. But perfectly functional. The graphics are subdued but evocative. Each chapter is its own unique area, and each area serves a specific story purpose. The graphics convey this immaculately. There is no voice acting. The story is told via story boxes. There is however music, and I thought the music was nicely done. A lot of piano-centric pieces with a mix of clean tones and dissonance, which was an excellent way to enhance the set pieces. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3276879714 You know, ultimately, I Got There. And the journey to do so was cool and somewhat thought provoking. It's not long enough to have you chewing on the concepts forever, and you've likely seen them individually before, but it is a game that still earns your attention for a bit. I think it is well worth giving a look. $4.99 is about right if you play through this three plus times as intended. If you are going to one and done this game, probably look for it on sale instead.
The Solitary Path
