One of the best platformers I have ever played, and personally appeals to me more than Celeste did. The obvious elephant here is that this game is heavily inspired by Celeste. It feels almost identical to play, and the art style is very similar, but it has its own unique theme and a few new mechanics. The most obvious difference is the addition of a Super Mario Sunshine esque hover pack. A lot of the game is built around this, so as a standalone game, this offers plenty to justify the price relative to Celeste. Would highly recommend to this to anyone, including people who don't normally play platformers. If you can't handle some of the difficulty later on, there are readily available accessibility options to cater to whatever play style you want.
First things first: this is not a Celeste clone, but rather a game that is heavily inspired by Celeste, and this is why it is so good. Not a lot of games can hold the bar up to Celeste's level, and this one can. Germinal is fun to play through, it kept me interested all the way to the end. All mechanics are well polished and the level design is remarkable as well, both in normal mode and in the hard mode. There are some annoying sections here and there, but what game doesn't have them? Kudos to the devs for adding a no-death achievement with the cute cat, got it as well. Meow! I highly recommend playing Germinal if you like platformers, honestly any kind of them, main campaign didn't feel hard at all. Too bad that the game got kinda ruined by the lack of marketing. Truly a hidden gem.

Germinal is really hard for me because I almost never play with gamepad. I would prefer easy difficulty instead of god mode. No challenge is boring so I decided to beat it with normal settings. It's between crying and cursing but I can't stop xD I like this game too much ^^
Quick Score: 5/5 Notes: Ignore, block, and unfriend anyone that says this is a Celeste clone. It has similarities, especially visually, but the core mechanic of the game is entirely unique from Celeste and as a result plays almost nothing like it. The only way you could say this was an actual clone is if you have also only ever played Celeste and think Celeste invented platformers. Rant aside, the game is good, no real complaints. My biggest complaint for a while was the lack of a quick restart button for speedrunning, but the option does exist, it is just hidden in the menus. The game took about 25 hours and 3000+ deaths for me to 100% (hard achievements) Overall pretty difficult but not impossible. If you like platformers you will like this. I didn't really care for the dialogue or story, but I almost never do. This one in particular I found pretty bad though personally.
Honestly, I have very mixed feelings about this game. I love it, but I hate it as well. These two worlds kept colliding for the whole duration of my playthrough. I played all of this game in one single sitting. It took 5 hours. So, let's start by why I hate it. This game is basically a Celeste clone, with only different graphics, and some new things. I, unfortunately, couldn't get past this reality while playing Germinal. Next up, the controls. Given that Germinal is a precision platformer, good controls are necessary. The controls are clunky and sometimes don't react that well, walljumping off of sticky surfaces while holding onto them either triggers the double jump or just hover ability by accident, so game over. The movement feels off, it's like playing Super Mario on Nintendo Switch, the character needs a lot of "steering" to control them properly. This issue isn't present in Celeste, however. Madeline moves exactly as you press the keys on your keyboard/tilt your Joy-Con. This is by the way one of the reasons why I love Celeste so much, because the controls are 100% accurate. I feel like this game was not playtested properly. There are tons of spaces with incredibly strange timing or bad camera. By "incredibly strange timing" I mean those frame perfect cycles that are everywhere in the fifth chapter. And by "bad camera" I mean places where you usually drop down and you see nothing beneath you until you actually hit an obstacle off-screen. The camera certainly needs a lot of improving. Achievements were, for some weird reason, malfunctioning. I did not earn the achievements for comleting "Crossing the Bridge", chapter one and chapter two. While we are at it, I would also like to note that there are, according to some other player, more bugged achievements like this, to which the developer openly admitted. There is no way one could release their game if they knew major features were broken. Last, but certainly not least, the collectible exclusive rooms has one massive flaw - usually, you only have to grab the collectible, it gets collected and then, you just are stuck there. The only way out is to either get lucky with leap of faith blind falling down, hoping you don't hit anything or just die. These really mess up the death score. I think there should be something that would return the player to the room start upon grabbing the collectibles in certain rooms. To summarize things I like, I really liked the story, it was really dark and creepy at times, it was not like Celeste whose story was sad with funny moments at times, Germinal was incredibly dark and it was talking about a very serious problem that certainly needed some attention. One thing I like as well are the notifications when you are about to enter a room that does not allow you to go back. I wished this was a feature in the original Celeste, as I very often found the correct path by accident and missed the oppurtunity to collect the collectibles, meaning I had to go back later. I also liked the Super Mario 64 like thing in fifth chapter (jumping into paintings). To summarize it, I had fun while playing Germinal, but, like I said, I can't get over the fact that this is basically a clone of Celeste, along with a lot of bugs and inconsistent controls. The soundtrack wasn't anything extraordinary either, it was pretty much average. The only really praisable things are the level design, which is very decent and the story, that's basically everything I can think of. I honestly think that this is a very controversial game. I think you should play it, but I think you shouldn't play it too. I don't know, but I didn't feel like I was playing a new game at all. I felt like I was playing a Celeste mod instead. A paid Celeste mod. Which is absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, because all Celeste mods are free.
Germinal is an inventive unique precision platformer that fans of the genre will love. As a fan of precision platformers and top speedrunner of Celeste which was clearly an inspiration for this game, I can say confidently that this game is special and fans of the genre will love it. Germinal is a game that never runs out of ideas and doesn't overstay it's welcome. The length of the main story is perfect for the amount of mechanics it introduces and the difficulty is balanced well. There are plenty of extra challenges for players who love the game once they finish the main story and there is even a dedicated speedrun mode to couple with some fun hidden tech. The game feels good, inventive, consistent, and gets a high recommend from me for all platformer fans.
not a celeste clown it has the same feeling as celeste although the music not as good but the ideas here has far more variety and it is quit good. but the game is very short. if you like platformer games especially celeste I think this game will be a good fit for you.
Genuine review for once because I respect the devs a lot as people and probably haven't looked forward to a game as much as this one upon hearing its announcement a year or so back. Anyway, you can tell right from the get-go the passion that went into this. It had a simple story to tell and it told it more subtly, which I find fascinating. From a visual standpoint, the elements say more than enough. Polish was a priority and it shows. I wasn't following the development process itself all that closely, but I am very impressed with how the looks of the game came out, especially as a first (and indie) project. Nothing looks rushed and everything blends together extremely well. The atmosphere that is being portrayed hits hard, as I'm sure it does with most of us if the premise wasn't already obvious. Now for the gameplay. I don't usually seek out platformers, especially given that I'm quite bad at them, but this was a great first experience out of my comfort zone. Every stage adds a new mechanic or a new layer on an already existing mechanic, and I find that type of progression very intuitive. My personal favorite mechanic that I've seen (so far) is the reactive objects, where if you jump then an object moves. It was very fun and challenging to learn the path to either avoid them, or use them to progress. Nothing got stale in this aspect and I loved experiencing a new challenge every time. I also love how the devs instinctively made speedrunning as viable as possible, giving it it's own mode and also designing the stages around that (little waiting sections). Essentially, the way the stages were designed can appeal to everyone. I'm still not done with the game at the time of writing this (I accidentally left the game on when I was away from home for 3 days lol), and will probably update this more when I get further, but this well exceeded my expectations. Despite my lack of experience in the platformer genre, I feel confident in saying that this is a game worth looking up to from a development standpoint. This was a great entry into my platforming experience and an excellent first project from the studio. If you take on anymore projects in the future, I very much look forward to seeing them through. ✌️
A fun precision platformer that seems heavily inspired by Celeste. It does more than enough to stand out however, with a heavy focus on its unique hoverpack mechanic. Well designed levels and a solid difficulty curve made this enjoyable enough to recommend! Check out https://store.steampowered.com/curator/41559946 for more recommendations!
