Genome Guardian

One of the strangest Roguelites I've ever played. Not because it's bad or anything but because of the sheer amount of CONTENT. You're likely to spend like, actual days just grinding through all the stuff Genome Guardian has to offer and nowadays there are plenty of Roguelites, or even just games in general that feature a lot of content but for me GG feels different. There's new stuff around every corner, you're constantly unlocking things and trying out new builds and seeing new weapons and mods and it's insane how people hundreds of hours in can STILL see brand new things. 10/10, please buy it, play it, whatever. If you like this one, the sequel is literally the exact same thing with 10x the amount of content. Oh, and the Developer is one of the nicest people ever and despite having a very large community they still manage to treat each of their fans like actual people. They feel like a friend more than a developer and I really appreciate that. You don't get many people nowadays willing to read every review and go through every suggestion.

After nearly 43 hours I'm ready to not recommend this, unfortunately. Multiple times rage quitting, uninstalling, reinstalling, proverbially banging my head against the wall, and the cycle continues. I can beat everything at depth 5 (with different builds nonetheless), but game show mode is GARBAGE. There are just far too many unwinnable scenarios and a lack of rerolling the terms is ridiculous. As for the story I thought all the cryptic messages would culminate to some sort of "you're actually the bad guy fighting off good antibodies" ending, but alas. Maybe I missed something. Though I love the music and sound design, the art style, the creepy factor, the genius combination of weapons (as well as their descriptions), and the receptive nature of the devs. I'll call this a 40/60 toward yes/no for recommending this game. I've already wishlisted the sequel. Even if gameshow mode infuriates me

It's good for wasting time. Besides that, not really worth the price tag.

Absolute banger of a soundtrack The visual style is pretty simple, but I really like these colorful geometric shapes. The UI feels a bit counter-intuitive though There are tons of characters and weapon combinations. Every run can feel different There are multiple game modes, I think I enjoy Shmup the most I wish there was more of permanent "combat" upgrades. I bought all of initial research upgrades pretty quickly, and now there are only cosmetics Overall, the game is definitely worth its price, if you want to get dopamine hits from blowing up neon enemies with your own builds

It shouldn't be this fun, but it is. Building guns to great music just works.

This game was quite the journey to 100%, although if you ask me, I'd definitely highly recommend playing the sequel "Genome Guardian 2" instead over this, as in GG1 it was quite difficult to read the storyline, amongst other minor or/and MAJOR annoyances. In GG2, the story was far more easily readable, it's basically a re-telling of the whole story of GG1 in a sense. Despite that, however, I mostly enjoyed the game despite being aware of the fact that GG2 was out at the time as I was trying to play this a lot on streams. So if you're looking to try out Genome Guardian, gun for Genome Guardian 2 instead, unless you don't mind 100%'ing both of these, of course.. then go ahead. After all, this review isn't here to discourage you from buying GG1, as I still liked it. Definitely a lot of fun moments was had with this, and I only know that in GG2 I'll have way more fun for sure, so can't wait to get back to that in the near-future! Oh, and one last thing, while this game is made in unity, don't get discouraged by it, as you do have various settings in-game you can change, such as the render scale and whatnot if you tend to have a lot of lagspikes & frame drops.. which is honestly something I hope to see in GG2 as well, more game settings to help with performance. But hey, at least on the plus side, you don't have to worry about having to need the most powerful computer either!

I love the complexity of this game and I haven't even scratched the surface. I'm thinking to buy the second version too, in the demo the gameplay feels very refreshing and has lots of QoL features.

Buy this game. Also buy Cell Command. Also buy Genome Guardian 2. Delete all of your other videogames. You won't need them anymore.
