Gears of War: Reloaded — a solid way to enter the series
I’m not sure why this game received so many negative reviews, because personally, I didn’t see anything seriously wrong with it. I didn’t encounter any bugs, and the graphics were clearly reworked quite a lot.
Visuals and presentation
The game looks good, but I do have one complaint. From the videos I watched of the original version, the old graphics made the characters look more brutal and more realistic. It felt like they were really living through a war for survival.
In Reloaded, the characters look a bit too clean. Sometimes they look like they just came out of a Turkish sauna after a good gym session. They are huge, polished, and very “fresh,” while the original seemed rougher, dirtier, and heavier in tone.
Gameplay and atmosphere
This was my first time playing Gears of War, and overall I liked it. The story is good, the atmosphere works well, and the mechanics have their own charm. The gameplay can feel a little clunky at first, but once you get used to it, you start to feel the soul of the game.
There is something special here. It has that old-school weight and character that many modern games often miss.
Cross-platform experience
One of the best things about this game is that it can be played across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. That is a big advantage. I have friends on different platforms, and I would honestly like them to buy this game too, so we can play together.
For that alone, the game already has a lot of value.
For new players
If you have never played Gears of War before and you are interested in trying it, I think you can safely buy this game, especially on sale. It is a good entry point into the series.
About multiplayer
That being said, I’m a little afraid to enter multiplayer. I have a feeling it might be like StarCraft: you enter fresh, clean, smiling, and then some basement veterans who have been playing for 20 years tear you apart in seconds.
Judging by some videos I found, this could easily happen in Gears of War too. My nerves are more important to me.
Final thoughts
Overall, I recommend Gears of War: Reloaded, especially for newcomers. It has a good story, strong atmosphere, solid mechanics, and great cross-platform potential.
It may not be perfect, and the remake could have kept more of the rough original look, but the game itself is still fun and absolutely worth trying.
