About
It is 1980. You have a small studio, limited cash, and fifty years of a changing industry ahead of you. New genres will rise, platforms will fight for players, technology will transform what games can be, and rival companies will compete for every sale.
Game Dev Empire is a deep, single-player management simulation about growing a video game company from its first modest release into a diversified industry empire.
Every release begins with a chain of decisions. Choose a genre and theme, target one or several platforms, select an engine and technologies, set the project's size, appoint a director, assemble a team, and decide where its time should go.
Combine genres with themes, each with different strengths and market potential.
Guide projects through design, production, debugging, and release.
React to development dilemmas, control scope, manage bugs, and decide when a game is ready to ship.
Turn successful releases into franchises with sequels, ports, patches, and DLC.
Hire people with different skills, salaries, seniority, morale, and energy. Organize them into dedicated teams and departments for development, research, marketing, and hardware. Train promising employees, manage studio culture and benefits, and grow into larger offices without letting payroll outrun your revenue.
A great game can still disappear without the right audience. Track genre popularity and saturation, platform audiences, competing releases, and changing quality expectations. Announce projects, run campaigns through era-appropriate media, release demos, attend industry expos, set prices, and keep older games visible after launch.
Dozens of rival companies release games, build reputations, publish other studios, and manufacture their own platforms. Choose a historical market structure or an alternative simulation where the console business emerges differently in every run. Sign publishing and software contracts, negotiate exclusivity, or become a publisher yourself.
Success opens new ways to build your empire:
Research technology and create or license game engines.
Design, develop, manufacture, price, and market your own consoles.
Open a digital storefront and launch a subscription service.
Acquire other studios and manage them as subsidiaries.
Build lasting intellectual properties, win awards, and leave a mark on the industry.
The industry evolves from 1980 to 2030 as technology, expectations, platforms, and competitors scale across the decades. After that milestone, your company can continue in an open-ended sandbox. There is no single prescribed way to win—but bankruptcy is always possible if ambition outruns cash flow.
A warm pixel-art interface, an animated studio view, clear reports, adjustable difficulty, and a built-in encyclopedia make a detailed business simulation easier to understand. Play in English or Spanish, adjust the interface scale, reduce motion, and control time at your own pace.
