Gahkthun of the Golden Lightning, developed by Liar-soft and published by MangaGamer, is a rich, imaginative steampunk visual novel that immerses players in a world where science and mysticism coexist under the flickering glow of mechanical marvels. Set in 1908 on the massive artificial island of Marseille Offshore Academia, the story unfolds in an alternate historical reality where engines run on arcane power and human ambition collides with divine mystery. It is a world of innovation and oppression, of hidden conspiracies and fragile ideals, where technology and human spirit intertwine in an intricate dance. At its heart lies a compelling tale of rebellion and discovery, anchored by a mysterious transfer student—Nikola Tesla—whose arrival upends the carefully controlled order of the academy and ignites a chain of events that challenge the power of the elite and the boundaries of human potential. The narrative begins with Neon Scalar Smilja, a quiet and unassuming student whose life changes the day Tesla strides into her classroom. A figure shrouded in myth and confidence, Tesla’s proclamation of war against the corrupt ruling council of the academy draws Neon into his orbit and sets the stage for a sweeping tale that balances grand steampunk spectacle with intimate moments of human emotion. The story is presented in episodic form, with each chapter unfolding as a self-contained mystery or “case” that gradually builds toward a larger confrontation between Tesla and the forces governing the world. The structure allows the story to explore a range of tones—from suspense and philosophical reflection to humor and friendship—without losing sight of its central themes of resistance and enlightenment. One of the most striking qualities of Gahkthun is its ability to weave an atmosphere that feels both wondrous and oppressive. The setting of the Marseille Academia is beautifully realized, a floating city of steam and gears that embodies the contradictions of the era it depicts. It is a place where students pursue scientific advancement but remain bound by rigid hierarchies and unseen political machinations. The visual presentation captures this duality perfectly: richly detailed backgrounds depict glowing laboratories, gothic halls, and stormy skylines, while the vibrant character art brings personality and life to each scene. The visual design maintains a balance between elegance and complexity, drawing the player into a world that feels lived-in, intricate, and distinct from the generic settings of many visual novels. The writing carries the unmistakable touch of Liar-soft’s narrative style—dense, lyrical, and philosophical, yet peppered with humor and eccentricity. The story alternates between moments of high drama and quieter introspection, often pausing to explore the beliefs and motivations of its characters. Tesla himself is written as both an idealist and a visionary, a man burdened by genius and purpose, while Neon serves as a grounding presence, her perspective giving the player a more human lens through which to view the extraordinary events around her. Their dynamic forms the emotional core of the narrative: Tesla’s unwavering conviction contrasted with Neon’s curiosity and doubt creates a compelling relationship that evolves as the story progresses. Through their interactions, the novel explores questions of progress, faith, individuality, and the cost of knowledge. The supporting cast adds color to the story, though not all characters receive equal attention. Some of the side characters stand out for their distinct quirks and backstories, while others fade once their specific chapter concludes. This uneven characterization, while occasionally noticeable, does little to undermine the novel’s overall charm. Each character represents a different facet of the world’s moral and ideological complexity, whether it be a cynical bureaucrat, an idealistic inventor, or a student caught between rebellion and obedience. The interplay between these figures helps reinforce the novel’s exploration of how systems of power shape individuals and the ways in which people resist or succumb to them. Structurally, Gahkthun functions more as a kinetic novel than a branching visual novel. Player choices are minimal, and the story follows a largely linear path from beginning to end. While this may disappoint players seeking a highly interactive experience, the linearity serves the storytelling well, ensuring that pacing and tone remain consistent. The episodic structure, however, can sometimes lead to uneven pacing; the early chapters are brisk and engaging, while the middle sections slow down as the narrative detours into side stories that, though thematically relevant, may feel tangential to the main plot. The finale, however, ties these threads together with satisfying grandeur, blending emotional resolution with the kind of mythic spectacle that defines Liar-soft’s best works. The production quality is impressive for a visual novel of its age and scope. The art direction is lush and atmospheric, with striking use of color and composition that complements the steampunk setting. The Japanese voice acting is consistently strong, lending authenticity and emotional depth to every scene, while the soundtrack enhances the sense of drama and mystery. The music shifts seamlessly between haunting melodies, tense orchestrations, and softer, reflective themes, helping to shape the novel’s emotional landscape. Together, the audio and visuals create a world that feels both grand and intimate, mechanical yet alive. Thematically, Gahkthun of the Golden Lightning stands out for its philosophical undertones. Beneath its fantastical surface lies a meditation on human progress and the consequences of ambition. It questions the meaning of enlightenment in a world where knowledge can both liberate and corrupt. Tesla’s crusade against the academy’s ruling elite becomes an allegory for intellectual and moral rebellion, while Neon’s journey reflects the struggle to reconcile wonder with skepticism. The story’s blend of science, mysticism, and moral inquiry invites the player to reflect not only on the characters’ dilemmas but also on broader questions about civilization, power, and belief. While Gahkthun’s scope and depth make it a memorable experience, it is not without flaws. The heavy prose and occasional digressions may deter readers looking for a faster pace, and the episodic rhythm can sometimes make the central plot feel disjointed. However, for those who appreciate deliberate storytelling and rich world-building, these qualities become part of its appeal. The game’s length provides ample room to absorb its atmosphere and themes, and its slower sections often reward patience with moments of genuine insight and beauty. In the end, Gahkthun of the Golden Lightning is a rare blend of ambition and artistry—a story that invites players to lose themselves in its intricate machinery of words, ideas, and emotions. It captures the grandeur of a bygone era while exploring timeless questions about humanity’s relationship with progress and power. Though it demands patience and attention, it rewards those who engage with it fully through its mesmerizing world, eloquent writing, and unforgettable characters. It is a visual novel that reminds its audience that storytelling can be as much about reflection as revelation, and that even in a world of iron and steam, the heart of the tale remains deeply human.
Nikola Tesla is so cool. I wish he was real.
goodshit and better than dies irae
What a heroic fairy tale.
ótima história, muito bom vale a pena MASTER!!!
First of don't mind my play time, I had to play it without using the steam launcher because the game is bugged otherwise. Now, to the review. This story has an interesting setup but it also insists on dragging out everything ten times longer than it has to. It let's setups hanging forever and what could be said in 2 sentences gets stretched to 10, it is really hard to keep reading it for longer than just a bit. But the killing blow is what I like to call ''Why the ♥♥♥♥ did you put your creepy rape fantasy in there'' Syndrom that way too many japanese mangas and visual novels have. No, this does not deserve a spoiler tag. And no, the tentacle rape scene was not done because it was necessary for the story, it is obvious to anyone that saw the scene that the it is simply there because some creep on the team had a some complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up fetish. I cannot even begin to express how little point there is in that scene existing for the story. There is genuinly not even the shred of a doubt that it's in there because someone in the team was really into ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up tentacle rape. And this most certainly is not some fetish hentai visual novel, this is a simple supernatural story novel. As such I will not be finishing the novel and recommend everyone to not even try it. It is of average quaility at best and that is before throwing the makers ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up fetishes in your face.
