THE SHORT REVIEW: 5 out of 10. The gaming equivalent of a McDonald's cheeseburger: there's worse things you could "eat", such as dog poo between a couple of slices of mouldy bread, but ultimately you get a bland approximation of juicy meat flavour and the only thing that really stands out is the slice of pickle. Which isn't what you paid a couple of quid for.... What you have here is a rogue-like run-and-gun shooter, where the elements of randomisation add nothing overall due to a lack of any depth or meaningful strategies. So the constant repetition of restarting after death becomes a chore, whilst the action is passable but not strong or varied enough to maintain interest in it. It's not a bad game, and actually has a fairly decent feel to it and design. However: you'll have seen everything it has to offer in half an hour of playing it, and by the two hour refund mark I was getting pretty bored with how little sense of progression it gives. Not awful by any means, and yet....really hard to recommend it nonetheless. THE LONG REVIEW: Uh, well, not much more to add here, other than fleshing out any mild praise for it, and then banging on about those complaints to a tedious degree. Controls are slick and responsive, and there are some nice touches to the game-play and enemy design. Such as "ghost" enemies that only become solid when your character switches between colours, medic enemies that cast a healing area, ones that run up to you and blow themselves up, enemies that split into two smaller ones when shot, and so on. There's also traps in the environment that can harm your character and your foes, which is a nice touch, albeit not especially effective in combat as they take a bit too long to trigger. The weapons in the game feel good and some have interesting secondary effects, such as firing off a powerful shot when a clip is emptied. However: You have to buy them from a shop and after death you don't restart the game with those weapons. You instead begin with a weak and boring pistol, and due to the randomised design it's possible you could die of old age before you come across a shop to get anything else. Slain foes might drop health, but it's rare they drop anything useful that changes the predictable tempo of each room. As an action game it gets boring quite quickly, with none of the thrills a carefully curated linear title could give. Is it fun? Sure...for a room or two, but then you go into a third room with the same crappy gun and do the same thing, and then a fourth and do the same thing, and the fifth, the sixth, and on, and on, and onnnnnnnnnnnnnn. What are the rogue-like elements adding? I'm asking you, because having played the game I really can't tell why so many developers think their game-play counts as that description. Everything that gets upgraded is incremental and meaningless to any actual strategies or possibility for variety / experimentation. This isn't some Diablo-esque character traits, or deep skill-trees, with the random element forcing you to play to whatever style the game deems to give you. A card-battler like 'Slay the spire' makes you do that, or 'Darkest dungeon' with its morale and insanity effects. This is "my character got a bit better at the shooty-shooty-bang-bang" but alas, it doesn't get any less boring and mundane in practise. Graphically it's kind of attractive with its lighting and particle effects, but everything else looks like 'Minecraft' and has a bland, blocky style to it with washed-out colours. Subsequently every room is exactly the same, and the enemies don't really stand out visually (despite having varied attacks overall) so the lack of variety becomes even more apparent despite the level layouts changing due to the rogue-like elements. It has a nice musical track, though that is singular rather than the plural "tracks", as combat repeats the same piece of music over and over again. Reached level two? Think it will be a different piece of music? Well, think again. I get that the game is low-budget, but there are limits to how much good-will that understanding will afford you, and graphically and musically this game passes that tolerance limit. The basics are reasonable, yet the execution is mind-numbing, and for the price I really wouldn't be very happy having bought this. As there are more focused action games that are cheaper than this, and much better at what they do. I honestly don't know of a rogue-like shooter that's better than this, though that's due to a lack of familiarity rather than this games qualities. Something like 'Returnal' maybe? To be fair: (a) I think being a rogue-like rarely adds anything of merit (regardless of the genre) unless the game in question is already a great example in that genre to begin with (b) The alternatives (Returnal? Risk of rain 2?) cost somewhat more than this does, though on the other hand I would say that this is still over-priced by a few quid. All I do know for sure is that this game got pretty dull well before the two hour refund period was up.
Imagine Enter the Gungeon and Ikaruga blended up, it makes for some interesting gameplay, that's for sure~ My feedback so far: - the starter pistol needs a buff, since you may go a long while without a better weapon even on a new fresh run, even just a range buff would be great - it would be great to be able to manage your gun inventory, drag and drop style, it gets messy switching guns to the one you want once you have too many - There's weapons that only work with a specific type of energy, it would be great to split the gun inventory per element so you don't hold an incompatible gun when you switch elements, with normal guns being shared between both inventories
Fun action roguelike with unique art and interesting gameplay. It starts a bit slow, but gets a lot better once you grab a few perks. The main gameplay is typical for the genre. You advance through randomly created floors, defeat enemies, gather coins to spend on better goods in shops, and open boxes with perks. Everything is lost upon death, with the exception of special keys and stat improvements. The unique mechanic is the blue and yellow energy. Numerous things are connected to each energy, and you can change at will. Examples include opponents that can only be wounded with the appropriate energy and chests that open only with the matching color. Additionally, some weapons and perks are energy-specific; they simply don’t work if you have the opposite energy. Fortunately, most enemies are in neutral energy, so you won't have to continually switch during combat. Three keys are unique to each floor and are hidden in unique puzzle areas. These challenges disable your ability to switch between energies but give you doors that, after you pass through them, switch between the two colors. The goal is to push boxes and use doors to reach the final room with the key. You keep these keys forever because they let you open unique chests that make subsequent runs a little bit simpler. However, you still need to find those chests. I think it would be better if those chests appreared right at the start of the run. Anyway, the more important is the puzzle room that gives you coins at the beginning of each run. The reason you want to do that is that items are pricey. It's nearly impossible to purchase anything just by eliminating enemies that randomly drop a chest of coins once you finish clearing out a room. While your starting gun has unlimited ammo, the short range and fun factor just isn’t there because you simply can’t afford a better gun at the start. And even when you get a new gun, ammo is wasted so fast it's better to save it for bosses. One big issue I noticed is that weapons don't automatically switch to next available when you run out of ammo. It might sound like I'm nitpicking, but dying while juggling through weapons and making sure you're in the right energy state happens way too often. The game's subject is time travel and experiments, therefore each "floor" is set in a different time period. Most enemies show up in all the stages, but there are still enough distinct ones to keep the game interesting. Four floors might not see much, but there’s enough content here to keep you busy for a while. A nice addition is a library that gets filled with all the weapons, enemies and perks you encounter.
Great indy roguelike! What impressed me first was how well this game was optimised, especially for an indie game - literally no loading time on my pc. I like to play fast-paced roguelike games to sort of relax my brain and just have fun. For me, that means a lot of weapons, a lot of skills, and a variety within those - and this game has dozens and dozens of different guns and skills that feel very different to each other (unlike most such games that copy-paste guns and just change something very small about it). Even each of the dozens of optional puzzles are so different from one another - something that even AAA games struggle to achieve... It's not very long, but it is a roguelike, so obviously, you can go again and again. And I like that there is a difficulty setting, so I don't have to feel like it is work - I can just relax playing it.
Nice game, I enjoyed it. The blue-yellow mode switching adds a nice twist.
