♥♥♥♥ You Witch is a short, surreal, and culturally idiosyncratic first-person adventure that blends folklore, psychological uncertainty, and dark humor into an unconventional walking-sim experience. Developed and published by Beshbarmak Games, the title follows a protagonist living an ordinary life in the Kazakh steppes—complete with traditional dishes, everyday chores, and post-Soviet housing—until things start slipping into the bizarre. Strange visions appear, your best friend confesses their love to you, and soon a supernatural witch begins to stalk your steps. The game wastes no time throwing you into a strange fusion of domestic realism and folk horror, which gives it a personality unlike most indie horror titles on Steam. Exploration forms the backbone of the experience. You move through yurts, mountain paths, old apartments, and rural landscapes that capture a mixture of modern Kazakhstan and timeless steppe culture. Everyday objects—cooking utensils, livestock, clothing, tools—become part of environmental interactions that help ground the game’s surreal events. The walking-sim foundations are clear: you search through spaces, look for hidden objects, and uncover small narrative clues that deepen the atmosphere without relying on long cutscenes or heavy exposition. The game’s environments are not large, but they are carefully arranged to emphasize mood, culture, and intimacy. What sets the game apart is its unusual voice-interaction mechanic. The witch is not merely a visual threat; the game expects you to fend her off by shouting into your microphone, specifically using Russian obscenities. The mechanic is intentionally absurd, leaning into dark comedy as much as horror. It’s an unusual twist that creates memorable moments, especially when the tension is broken by unexpected humor. However, it also means the game is not designed for silent play—its design fully leans into this idea of vocal confrontation, which may entertain some players and alienate others depending on their comfort with the mechanic. Despite the short runtime—most players finish the game within two hours—the experience manages to leave a distinct impression. The combination of cultural specificity, supernatural encounters, and emotional subplots adds texture to what might otherwise be a straightforward walking simulator. There are touches of philosophy, quiet slice-of-life moments, and flashes of folkloric myth that enrich the narrative without becoming overwhelming. The developers clearly aimed for atmosphere and flavor rather than complex mechanics or branching plots, and this focus gives the game a surprisingly cohesive identity. That said, the game also shows clear limitations. It is brief enough that some players feel its ideas end before they can fully develop. There are no deep systems to master, no combat beyond the microphone gimmick, and only light puzzle-solving. The environments are intriguing but relatively constrained, and those expecting a more robust horror experience—full of elaborate scares or tension-building sequences—may find it more quirky than frightening. Some technical rough edges exist as well, occasionally affecting immersion, although they tend not to break the game outright. Even with these caveats, ♥♥♥♥ You Witch succeeds in delivering something distinctive: a compact, culturally rich, and darkly playful horror-adventure with an unapologetically strange sense of humor. It’s the kind of game that sticks in your memory not because it is large or complex, but because its creative choices are bold, specific, and a little unhinged. For players who enjoy experimental indie titles, folk-horror themes, and off-beat mechanics, it’s an entertaining and unusual experience. For those seeking depth, longevity, or traditional scares, it may feel more like a curiosity than a full meal—but as a short, atmospheric journey through the Kazakh uncanny, it achieves exactly what it sets out to do. Rating: 8/10
A wildly unique horror game that blends psychological chaos, genuine laughs, and solid jump scares. The atmosphere and audio design are fantastic, with beautiful visuals to match. Minor loading lag holds it back slightly, but overall it’s one of the most fun and refreshing horror experiences I’ve played in a while.
