Fortune & Famine

I played this game at a gaming event at the Game Arena in Columbus, it was so fun! Won on my first try :) I bought it here, it's super great! I love the strategy, it's always tough to decide whether you wanna stock more money or get grain to win the game but that's what makes it fun!

Very simply, if you enjoy the tabletop game 7 Wonders, good chance you will enjoy Fortune & Famine. The game has some nice politicking in it where it is important to be mindful of potential protections some players hold against attacks. It doesn't have as many variables as a game like 7 Wonders but this is not a fault. The game is is still complex without too many complications. It's a nice chill strategy game to play with something in the background. It is also possible to play with others hothand style since there is no information that is private.

This game is easy to learn and can be finished in about 30 minutes or less. It takes a bit of time to develop winning strategies and once you do, you still need to deal with the random Famine cards. Games that combine both skill and luck are some of my favorites and this one is definitely worth picking up. Also this game works on Steam Deck when using the right trackpad and also the touchscreen. Might have to zoom in a bit to read the rules (depending on your eyesight) but overall the UI is well formatted.

A wonderful strategy game that is simple to learn but could certainly take time to master. Each ruler has unique abilities that can change up your strategy. There are strategies that seem to benefit each ruler, but may have to be changed as the rounds and years progress depending on what workers each has hired and what your resource stocks are. Each game only takes on average 30 minutes depending on how much thinking each player does. I only played against AI so of course the AI completes their thinking immediately, but still very quick to play several games. Mechanics 9/10 No real complaints to be had with the mechanics, some minor things such as not being able to access the game menu when it is not your turn and having to click and drag grain tokens to your storage rather than clicking on the storage for a faster storage option. The latter option is understandable to prevent accidental storage of grains when clicking too fast. Gameplay 10/10 This is more to the original concept, but the gameplay is very nice. Each round doesn't feel as if it takes too longer even when taking a longer time to think. The transition between phases, rounds, and years is very smooth and gives plenty of time to see what each player has chosen to do even when playing with AI opponents. Graphics 10/10 Nothing to complain about here, much of the art was taken directly from the original tabletop but was adapted very well to the digital edition with the additional art blending in very well. The overall art is pleasing and easy on the eyes. Music 10/10 The music is a light and cheery style that you would expect to hear a bard play in a tavern. Each year has unique music and a distinct music for winning or losing the game. A nice additional touch is that each track loops very well without an awkward cut before it replays. Additional Thoughts Definitley read the rules and even read through the manual for the tabletop game as there are some elements that may be overlooked. Specifically that the amount of famine cards in each year corresponds with the year number. It is a detail that was in the manual but left out of the rules in game. May be updated in future.

Unique game. Nice graphics. Bought digital version before spending way more money on the board game version (try before you buy has convinced me to buy the retail version). Rules are easy to learn.

Элемент испытания удачи заключается в том, что зарабатываемые жетоны зерна можно в конце раунда конвертировать в победные очки за одну монету либо рискнуть и вместо этого получить либо одну монету либо ещё один жетон зерна, но в каждый ход (их всего 12) есть вероятность, что на поле выйдет карта голода и "сожрёт" половину ваших жетонов зерна. При чём ты точно знаешь, что на первые четыре раунда карта голода одна, на вторые - две и на третья - три. Но есть небольшая вероятность, что какая-то карта голода уйдёт в сброс в закрытую, о чём никто не будет знать. Немного хромает экономика из-за небольшого разнообразия карт, но это компенсируется аукционом и элементом удачи. Онлайн отсутствует. Можно играть только в режиме несколько игроков за одним устройством либо с ИИ.
