About
You wake up sometime in the future in a cryo capsule. You don't know who you are, but one thing is clear: You have a cybernetic leg, a ball and enemies to fight! Master your new weapon, explore this strange underground world and try to escape this post-apocalyptic madness.

Footgun: Underground has a very special challenge: Instead of guns, magic or swords you have only one weapon to master: your futuristic ball of death. In classic Roguelike fashion, you explore random rooms, fight different creatures and upgrade your equipment along the way. Death is part of your journey, so don't give up, learn the ball control and the synergies to successfully move forward through the dark depths of the underground. But beware, not all enemies are your normal grubs...
Just kicking the ball and hitting the enemies on the ground is pretty easy, but the true challenge lies in the precise control of your mighty weapon. Leverage the angles and layout of the rooms as well as the behavior of the different enemy types to create a barrage of violence. With a variety of different, unlockable characters as well as a multitude of unique balls, each run you will find many builds and different playstyles to experiment with.

The Good -The skill curve feels perfect. You start off kicking a basic ball randomly and as you get better at the game sniping an enemy from across the room becomes second nature and extremely satisfying. -The starting balls and upgrades are lack luster, but after you start beating bosses and unlocking characters and upgrades the game starts feeling even better than it already was. Every time I beat a boss I was so excited to do a run with my new character and every time I unlocked an upgrade I couldn't wait for it to drop. Unlike so many roguelikes Footgun kept me motivated to keep unlocking and keep getting better. -Every design aspect is unique, from characters to balls to enemies to bosses I've never seen a game sets itself apart so far apart from other games simply by being so unique and creative in its mechanics. I could go on and on about how no charter/ball/upgrade feels even somewhat similar but I think that would make this review even longer than it already is. -The art is good, I'm not an art person so expressing exactly how I feel would be difficult but the art is worth mentioning as one of the strong points. The Bad (QOL) -Not being able to rebind keys is not something big, but comes standard with pretty much every modern game. This is especially painful because the M+K controls aren't great on the mouse side (although even if it were the controller is better IMO). -The inventory feels clunky to navigate through, I'm not a UI designer so I couldn't really give any other input on this other than gut feeling. -The game relies on getting repeats of upgrades in order to make them better, so when I visit the shop and can't see if I have something already or if my inventory will be full, it's not fun. -The runs feel infinite in a bad way, you'll get repeats of themes and even bosses with no floor/stage count and nothing to make you think there even is an end. I would guess this is temporary but as it stands not the best. The Bad (gameplay) -The wall can(n)on ball is a slog to play with, I get what the point of it is, but the risk vs. reward is not balanced. -There is no "this will hurt you" color, it's not as bad as it is now but when I started playing I would get hit by contact damage, random stuff on the ground I could hardly see, stuff I thought were my balls flying back at me. etc. because you have to focus on the whole screen at once. -The identity ball can't damage the big ol' head guy pretty much at all (I think it might be able to but the difficulty to do so is so much harder than any other part of the game it's crazy). I can't express into words how good this game feels to play, unfortunately I can express how bad some of the minor features feel when I use them. I imagine most of the small issues could be fixed with some small patches but I'm no game dev and don't know how difficult it would be, I'm not going to expect anything crazy. This review will be at least slightly out of date in the future so take everything with a grain of salt. With everything said this game gets a solid 7/10 with 9/10 potential if it keeps getting updates.
I can't recommend to buy this game full price in its current state. The idea is pretty nice, but the execution is lacking. The game received a few updates correcting some minor bugs (and adding a much needed option to see your inventory in the shop) in the first days after the release and since then has been forgotten by the devs. This is pretty sad because the game really needs at least a few QoL updates (inventory management is terrible in this game). The progression in this game is slow and unsatisfying. Shopping feels really bad: you only get a few random items to buy and can pay to reroll them, but the problem is that most of the time you are not given something that can be used to improve your current build. I've lost count of how many times I got into the shop, purchased nothing, and left with no money because I kept rerolling expecting to get at least something, but all the options did not work with my current build. Once you start unlocking more things this gets worse, because you have even more useless options to bloat the item pool. The inventory system is terribly designed. I like the idea of limiting items you are equipping for different characters with different stats, but limiting how much you can carry in your "backpack" in a game where you need to merge duplicate items to create a better version of them is straight-up bad (unless the space is at least big enough). Sometimes you get a low-level item that could be good for your build, but you end up not taking it because you are waiting for that one duplicate to show up so you can merge with the other one you are holding in your inventory just to create the stronger version of it that you need to merge with the one you are currently using. Then you learn you can use balls as a means of expanding your inventory (because you can place some upgrades inside them) and get frustrated with the bad controls and UI (especially if you are playing with a controller). If you ever need to exchange ball upgrades that are equipped into two different balls and your inventory is full, good luck! Oops, this can only be done for ball upgrades, so now you have to decide what to do with the characters upgrades (do you hold it waiting for an opportunity to upgrade it that may never come and drop something else, or do you skip it?) With some basic QoL updates, this game can become so much better. I didn't even talk about the gameplay itself, which is fine I guess. I would do some things regarding to ball control and aiming differently, but I guess the devs have played this game more and know what is best for more experienced players. Flying enemies are a pain in the ass and the bosses are either too basic or very annoying. The downside is that on top of it all, this is a very repetitive game, so you are always seeing the same enemies, bosses, rooms... If the game is on sale, it can be a good choice for a few hours of entertainment. But for a full price, I would wait until the devs give some attention to it.
The game isn't awful, and this is right on the border between recommend and not recommend. The idea for the game is unique, using the soccerball and your feet to damage enemies is a fun idea....in theory. Also the different balls are all different, some better than others, and it is fun to see what new abilities you will get with new unlocks. The rest of the game is half baked. First off aiming with the ball is super finnicky on mouse or gamepad, especially with flying enemies or guys on ceiling/up in corners. I once died on a boss trying to hit him 1 last time, but was so imprecise and he was in the single top R corner. The other issue is during fights you're trying to dodge a bunch of things while aiming an imprecise ball. The aiming system should have been revamped and more untuitive. The character unlocks are boring, as its just different stat allocations, and starting balls/abilities, but these are things you can pick up anyways so they aren't unique. Theres also different things like inventory spots and ability boost spots, which is just different allocations of plus/minus. The metaprogression sucks, as you unlock the ABILITY to find these items out in the wild but the more you unlock the less chance you'll get. Also this damages your ability to craft builds. The amount you get to unlock stuff in vending machine after is so small you'll feel shortchanged. Theres also no permanent progression, as things like unlocking inventory spots, or more items to choose from in shops, cheaper rerolls, more money dropped, and coins, etc would be better than the only think you unlock is the CHANCE to get 1-2 new upgrades which you may or may not use mid run. The tags for this game really aren't correct as it isn't a "roguelite" since theres no metaprogression or permanent progress. The inventory UI and system is kind of crappy based on how much you need to carry to HOPE to be able to combine later, but you may not end up finding another piece after, but some characters have such limited spots. The bosses are unique, but usually have wayyyyyyy too much health, as well as some enemies later on. You fight all enemies in these cramped generic rooms, which all look the same and end up being generic and repetitive. You can make some cool combos of balls with abilities, although it doesn't really ever change your playstyle with different characters or balls. You just keep trying to kick the ball around hoping to hit enemies. 6/10.
Some balls off the wall fun. Has a nice mount of items, balls, and characters. Runs are not too long so it is easy to hop on and do 1 or 2 real quick.
What's good: ✔ Interesting idea and engaging gameplay ✔ Great pixel art ✔ Roguelike merged with football/soccer ✔ Map movement similar to Slay The Spire ✔ Lots of upgrades and different types of balls A bit problematic: ⭕ It's hard to aim properly ⭕ Overall very challenging What's bad: ❌ Sometimes it's hard to see what is happening
A good entry level game to the "FIGHT, DIE, REPEAT" style games. Not so easy that it becomes a slog to 100%, but not so hard that I have to check my budget to see if I can afford a new controller. 8/10 easy. Really hope they add more content in the future.
A mecanica principal desse jogo é bem inovadora e super divertida! Fechar ele 100% teve um equilibrio perfeito de desafio e diversão, só fiquei com vontade de mais.
