Flashback, published by Ubisoft and developed by VectorCell under the guidance of original creator Paul Cuisset, is a modern remake of the iconic 1992 cinematic platformer Flashback: The Quest for Identity. The game attempts to reintroduce the classic’s gripping sci-fi story and intricate platforming mechanics to a contemporary audience with updated graphics, smoother animations, and quality-of-life improvements. While it succeeds in capturing much of the original’s mysterious atmosphere and challenging gameplay, the remake also exposes some of the dated design choices that can frustrate players accustomed to modern standards. The narrative follows Conrad B. Hart, an amnesiac who awakens in a dystopian future filled with alien threats and shadowy conspiracies. The story unfolds gradually as players explore sprawling levels filled with secret passages, hostile enemies, and environmental puzzles. The remake stays true to this structure, preserving the slow-burn storytelling and exploration that defined the original. Visually, the game is a marked improvement: environments are richly detailed, with a distinct sci-fi noir style enhanced by dynamic lighting, smoother character models, and cinematic cutscenes. This aesthetic makeover breathes new life into the game’s atmospheric world, making each area—from dense jungles to futuristic cityscapes—feel immersive and alive. Gameplay revolves around precise platforming, combat, and puzzle-solving. Many of the original’s signature mechanics return, such as the necessity to time jumps carefully, sneak past or engage enemies, and manipulate environmental elements to progress. The remake introduces some modern refinements like more responsive controls, analog aiming, and new gadgets, which help ease some of the frustrations associated with the original’s occasionally stiff inputs. However, the game still clings to certain archaic design elements: jump arcs can feel sluggish, collision detection sometimes feels unforgiving, and climbing or grabbing ledges requires manual input rather than automation. These legacy mechanics can make certain sections feel clunky or tedious, especially for players unfamiliar with early ‘90s platformers. A notable feature in the remake is the inclusion of checkpoint systems and some optional rewind functions (depending on platform), which aim to mitigate the punishing difficulty of the original. Despite this, Flashback maintains a reputation for steep challenge, with moments of trial-and-error platforming that can feel unfair by modern design standards. Players must remain patient and methodical, as rushing through sequences often leads to frustrating deaths or setbacks. The risk-reward tension and the satisfaction of mastering the controls will appeal to fans of demanding platformers, but newcomers might find themselves struggling to adapt to the game’s deliberate pacing and precision requirements. While the story and atmosphere are strong suits, the writing and voice acting in the remake occasionally veer into campy territory, sometimes detracting from the otherwise serious sci-fi tone. The dialogue delivery can feel exaggerated, and some of the plot exposition lacks subtlety, which might lessen the emotional impact for players expecting a more polished narrative experience. The game also has minor technical issues, such as occasional camera awkwardness during tight platforming sections and minor bugs, which break immersion momentarily but do not significantly disrupt the overall experience. In summary, Ubisoft’s Flashback remake is a faithful homage that revitalizes the classic for a new generation while preserving much of its original character. It offers a rich sci-fi world filled with exploration, puzzles, and tense platforming moments wrapped in a visually upgraded package. However, it doesn’t fully escape the constraints of its age-old design; some mechanics feel outdated, and the difficulty can be unforgiving. For longtime fans of the original, it’s a welcome trip down memory lane with some modern polish. For newcomers, it presents a challenging but rewarding experience, provided they’re prepared for moments of frustration and a slower-paced style of gameplay. Ultimately, Flashback stands as both a tribute to a beloved classic and a reminder of how far game design has evolved since the early ‘90s. Rating: 6/10
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- English - Inglés: Flashback is like taking a ’90s classic, tossing it into a blender with sci-fi, amnesia, and a protagonist who runs and jumps like he’s three months behind on rent. You wake up remembering nothing (just like after a quinceañera with an open bar), and suddenly you’re escaping aliens, conspiracies, and platforms that seem to hate you personally. The game has that gorgeous retro vibe: rotoscoped animations that move better than any of us on a Monday morning, stylish futuristic environments, and a story that pulls you in like someone who left you on “seen.” Every jump, every shot, every fall where you mutter curses under your breath… it all adds to that feeling of “damn, this thing aged really well.” The best part is that Flashback doesn’t need 4K, 120 FPS, or a monitor worth a kidney. With pure creativity and style, it builds an adventure that keeps you glued to the screen saying, “ok, one more and I’m done,” even though you already know you’re not going anywhere. In summary: Flashback is stylish nostalgia, ’90s action, and good old sci-fi done right. I give it a 7/10, plus a bonus for reminding me that old games used to punish you, but still made you feel like a hero… even if you walked away with less memory than the protagonist.
Мне не нравится оригинальная Flashback, потому что я наигрался в Another World и не вижу смысла повторять. Ремейк сделан точь-в-точь по лекалам оригинала. В менюшке прикольно, а дальше начинаются привычные карабкания. Ну ок.
Do you like Flashback? Ubisoft sure doesn't.
It took me 6 hours to beat the game, but in reality it took me over 30 years because I never could beat the original sega genesis version when I was a kid! Great game and a fun playthrough!
♥♥♥♥ Ubisoft Connect! Piece of crap spyware.
Meh... Play classic one.
Nie chce odczytać ostatniego checkpointu. Gra się wtedy sama zamyka
Chato e repetitivo!
