[h1]FoxMania: The Quest To Review All Fox Games On Steam![/h1] [i]Conditions for inclusion: [list] [*] -The player character must be consistently a fox; the fox must not be merely a skin or a character option [*] -Must have 100% working Steam achievements [*] -Must not be a visual novel [/list][/i] [b]Game #31: Finnigan Fox[/b] It's a remaster of [i]FOX n FORESTS[/i], which was game #4 I played for this review series! So, there's kind of an interesting story behind this game and why it even got a remaster in the first place. There was a failed console launch that you may or may not have heard of: the Intellivision Amico. [i]FOX n FORESTS[/i] was picked up to be one of its mascot platformers, receivng a style and gameplay makeover to presumably give it broader appeal. (It's possible that Tommy Tallarico himself may have had a hand in some of these changes, as his name appears in the credits about 7 times... or maybe he did nothing, for all we know. The man was at one point literally collecting as many game credits as humanly possible.) Once it became glaringly apparent that the console wasn't actually going to launch, several of the developers looked to other avenues to publish the games they'd developed for the system... and here we are. Personally, I choose to see this game as less of a random unnecessary remaster, and more of an obscure game preservation effort, so I'm totally cool with it. (Choice Provisions of BIT.TRIP fame got their [i]Breakout Beyond[/i] on Steam recently, too.) Anyway, how's the actual game? [i]Finnigan Fox[/i] is a short, solid run-and-gun platformer with a few upgrade mechanics and extremely light Metroidvania elements. There are 6 regular levels, 5 boss fights, 2 (absolutely terrible) shoot-em-up levels, and 4 bonus levels. There really isn't a lot of content here, and you're expected to replay the levels several times to hunt for collectables and grind for money. The game’s main gimmick is the ability to switch seasons. To quote my original review: the game’s gimmick of season-swapping is greatly overstated. It’s actually more like a light/dark world mechanic, since each level only has one pre-determined alternate season to switch to. But to the game’s credit, the season-swapping is very well-designed and makes for lots of creative moments. How does the remaster compare to the original? [list] [*] -The original had wonderful SNES pixel art. This new version looks like a Flash game. Personally, I find this to be a huge downgrade. [*] -Sounds and music, similarly, used to sound like faithful SPC tracks (that is, SNES sounds). Music has been replaced by a very hit-or-miss orchestral soundtrack. Some tracks I enjoy much more than the originals. [*] -Sound design, to put it bluntly, is garbage. Some sound effects are obnoxiously loud and irritating for no reason. [*] -All of the memorable graphical easter eggs, as well as the awesome credits sequence, are gone. [*] -The controls are MUCH improved! You can actually jump and shoot in midair now, which feels wonderfully freeing. The spin attack is also super reliable now, so you don't have to worry about jumping into an enemy and performing the wrong attack. This actually addresses my main complaint with the original game. [*] -Potions have been completely removed. I don't mind, as I rarely ever used them in the original. They've been replaced with "Treasure maps" which, contrary to what you might expect a treasure map to do, simply play a sound effect when you're near a secret seed. It dramatically shortens the time spent hunting for collectables. [*] -Checkpoints no longer cost money. [*] -Level design has been tweaked to be easier and less annoying, which I very much appreciated. The puzzles and general design are the same, but there's less enemy and obstacle spam. [/list] Other observations and nitpicks: [list] [*] -Coins are constantly falling through the floor, which seems weird and glitchy. [*] -At one point, I got softlocked just by ducking under a ledge. [*] -The shoot-em-up levels are still terrible. I still feel like they were just thrown together as an excuse not to design two more full levels. Apparently it was too hard to code HP for these levels, so you die in one hit if you just touch anything. [*] -The bonus levels are still super lame, and a big missed opportunity for some great endgame challenges. Again, I feel like the level designer simply gave up. [/list] In the end, despite its icky new art style, I have to admit that I enjoyed my time with this game quite a bit more than the original! The improved controls really did it for me, and made the long levels feel more like a joyful romp and less like a tedious journey. I gave the original a 6 / 10, so I’ll give this remaster a 6.5 / 10. Revisiting [i]FOX n FORESTS[/i] definitely wasn’t on my 2025 bingo card, but I'm not complaining! And it’s cool to see this game rescued from the fateful Amico. (I completed this game with 100% achievements on launch day in less than 4 hours!)

A beautiful remake with some very nice graphics - Love it

Not bad! You can beat the game in a few short hours. But sometimes, short is what you want. Not every game needs to be complex; sometimes you just want a fun little platformer with a cute mascot character. If that's what you're after, you can't go wrong here.

This is a fun, classic platformer game. It is a remake/remaster of an older game, Fox and Forrest I believe, but I never played that one. This one is a lot of fun, easy to pick up and play. Sometimes you don't want an epic, long game, just something fun and enjoyable. This fits the bill nicely. Give it a try!

so far I'm addicted to this game. It's a great game to play I just wish this fox can jump a little better but other than that it's like reliving the old childhood but then again I've never played Finnigan Fox I was looking through games and this one got me interested it's like all your favorite games all rolled into one I'm just more into the platform games and this one was perfect I really enjoy playing this game and so far I've had no issues since I've downloaded it on my computer. I highly recommend It's worth the play

I got this game because i played another game called saga of sins that is from the same developer (bonus level) that i absolutely loved! This one here seems to be more for kids, i still enjoy it lots and the season riddles are fun.

Amazing game! I really enjoy it, I finished the first levels, the gameplay is magical and also is the soundtrack! Worthy of the golden age of video games, thank you Amico Entertainment. Way to go! Looking forward to all the other games, I was especially looking for this one. Really excited to complete more of this game and will share about it with friends online.

This is a great cartoony action platformer and can be totally recommended for fans of this genre and well made games in general. I prefer playing it on hard and especially love the exploation and "search for hidden items" aspect of this game. The couch co-op is fun too but the sdtar of this game is the fluid controls and great level design :)
