Fabled Lands start off from a game book series that is span over 20 years ago. Now the legacy continues as a game in Steam which is Im very surprised and impressed. The game is very immersive if compare to the other old game books game in steam. The game have a selection of 6 profession to start off each with a different abilities and combat skills. The game itself is actually a open free world with a vast continent for players to explore: the rich farm lands, the warring states, the sea isle, the frozen tundra, the land of the rising sun, the mysterious land of the west and the ancient civilization at the south. Build your chars, collect wealth, start out your own castle or players can just be settled in any of the fantasy region as a lord or as a retainer. Game book fans, if you like Joe Dever Lone Wolf series or Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone Fighting Fantasy game books, then you should check out Fabled Lands in Steam. You will not be disappointed.
(I'm using Google Translate) I'm loving the game. I can't keep my current gear for more than 30-60 minutes, but it's incredibly fun in the situations the game throws at me (I'm playing on Ironman difficulty on my first playthrough, always with the revive option purchased). MINOR SPOILERS: I failed a charisma test, was sold into slavery in the far corner of the map in Uttaku, worked hard, befriended a blue-clad nobleman, and gained free stat points. I won the tournament in the arena three times, was paid and equipped, and earned my freedom. I couldn't buy a house because I don't have any titles in that city. I took a walk around the city; a religious event was happening, and I absolutely needed a scarf or I'd get fined. I was broke because I'd spent it all on a weapon. I was locked in the dungeons; there's a loose rock leading to the cell next door. The guy suggests we switch cells because he's already... He's been locked up for 30 years and wanted to do something good for once. I tell him I'm not going to change cells; after all, he was a con man and they were going to execute him that day. If I had switched, they would have executed me. I don't have money to pay for a lawyer, so I defend myself. I roll 17, and I have a 0% chance of being found guilty. They force me to work as a storyteller's slave, but I'm a warrior, I have no charisma. I fail the roll, my master takes it badly, and they throw me into the Red Garden, a place teeming with carnivorous plants. I roll an 8% chance of success on an exploration roll, and I'm one point away from saving my skin. They devour me. I reappear in the starting area with 4 extra attribute points and 1 point in Bokh mastery. I see it as a win-win.
A strangely addictive game with more content than I expected.
This is just such a nice adaptation of the great gaming book series. So well done. Thanks for all the love put in this game.
Still working my way through; would like to see a lower difficulty but the devs have updated continuously since I purchased.
Many good and some bad elements. A significant downside is there are a lot of 'roll or lose' situations that are not well telegraphed in advance, which makes for frustrating play where you either save scum or start over from 0 repeatedly. On the other hand, the mix of narrative adventures and combat hex grid works well and the sound design is good.
What a Gem of a Game
An excellent adaptation of the classic gamebook series. It is punishingly hard to start with, and you really have to plan in order to get our of poverty and get yourself some decent equipment. But it's also fair. If you have the right gear, yo can prosper. The stories you uncover are short self contained adventures that can be solved with combat, stealth, charisma or magery, and are inventive and flavourful. Good to dip into and do an hour now and again.
Great battle flag type role-playing game! I hope there will be more interesting and fun new content in the future! For example, the origins of more schools of thought (such as characters with single skills and magic having more initial choices, warriors can choose swordsmanship or unique weapon specialties, mages can initially specialize in a certain spell faction), or the origins of more character professions (such as the ancient Roman style centurion of the Exile, who initially carried two legion soldiers and would lose them due to death, can recruit new soldiers in the city and carry more soldiers as their level increases, can specialize in commanding or martial arts styles, affecting the overall or individual combat effectiveness of the legion) I hope different professions have more choices for different events, such as the centurion I just mentioned who can capture the castle owner with a numerical advantage in the mission of being unable to be killed, and can choose to permanently imprison him in the castle, or torture him in various ways at the cost of losing personal reputation to turn this character into a "black hound" of the legion as a combat unit Overall, I highly recommend this game and hope it continues to improve!!
Played for 10 minutes and uninstalled right away. I tried with this game but I kept dying from simple mistakes. it's a no for me.
