About
Welcome to a challenging colony simulation game set on a distant planet.
Starting with a small group of colonists, you're tasked to mine resources, refine materials, build structures, and innovate with new technologies. Across generations and centuries, you'll expand your settlement into a thriving civilization and terraform the planet to make it your new home.
Colonists are born, educated, work, retire, and die. Over generations, their needs may evolve and dedication may diminish.
Nothing simply disappears. Every bit of material transforms into something new. Resources follow their own cycles, involving production, consumption, and recycling.
Transform barren soil into fertile farmland using materials from your surroundings. Melt ice for water, use the water to grow food, and then purify it for reuse. Balance these elements and watch your colony thrive on the food you produce.
Convert exhaled carbon dioxide back into oxygen for your colonists. Tackle industrial pollution and manage various gases. As your base expands, maintaining atmospheric pressure becomes essential.
Begin with mining ores and minerals, refine them into advanced materials essential for constructing buildings and crafting items. With each step, transform raw resources into the foundational elements of your expanding colony.
Transform the planet's surface to make it habitable by managing temperature control, ecosystem growth, and water resources. Create a breathable atmosphere and turn the planet into your new home.
Research: Unlock new possibilities, buildings, and recipes via the research tree.
Power: Generate and store energy from diverse sources.
Game Events: Strange things can happen in the cosmos. Some events might be nice, but some, well you will see for yourself.
Space Management: Deal with the material you don't need.
Luxury Food and Goods: Produce various items to keep colonists productive.
Free time: Meet colonist social needs to prevent unrest.
Temperature: Control the temperature within your colony and on the planet.
See you underground!

I really did want to like this more, but there are a couple of issues that broke my suspension of disbelief. The entire system of how gas is handled needs to be rebalanced - there are too many resources that are consumed too quickly in the process of handling the various gases, not to mention significant technical holes relating to how gases are handled (read up on carbon dioxide and how a certain amount is needed in the atmosphere, also partial pressure and how it isn't actually necessary to have a whole atmosphere). Yes, I understand it's a game, but it is a SCIENCE FICTION game, and there's a limit to how much bad science I'm willing to put up with. Also, the Steam Achievements are broken in some way - I was reading through them and should have received at least a few of them.
If you like management challenge, it's game for you. I like the slow paced start with tutorial, but do not get fooled by it. You need to plan ahead. I failed quite hard on my first try :D All died on hunger. I need to focus more on what do to in the right time. But it was very captivating even tho I failed that bad. Back on start and now better... I hope. (Issues I had in the prerelease version seems to be all fixed)
I didn’t expect to enjoy this game as much as I did. The exploration of what you can do and progression is engaging, the complexity ramps up as your colony grows. A great game for anyone who enjoys a strategic/survival challenge.
The game has quite enjoyable game loop. I was planning to just test it out for a few hours and then spent much more time on it. It has that "just one more thing" feeling. Edit after 1.0 release: The game is much more polished now, good job devs!
Really enjoying ExoColony so far. The balance between managing resources, keeping colonists alive, research and expanding the base is challenging but rewarding. Looking forward to dig on the surface. It’s got that “just one more cycle” feel.
If you like games that force you to optimize (maybe things like Factorio or the magnum opus of Dwarf Fortress) and survive (Banished and similars) this might be your right jam. Graphics are simple to provide a nice overview, mechanics are hardcore to make you kill off your colonists when they dig where they are not supposed to. I think this is a nice game for fans of indie hard core sims.
When you see the game screens, ExoColony looks like clone of Oxygen Not Included. Fortunatelly, it is not. It is focusing more on management and progression of entire colony (resource management, education, aging, research) rather than individual colonists. The end goal is to terraform the planet. After a few hours you can have 30+ colonists and they die in about an hour, so don't attached to them :). In general, it is less complex and with less content, you can get most of the information you need with a few clicks from overviews menu. It has a lower learning curve with comparison to ONI, so it is more suitable for casual players, but don’t expect everything to be easy - there’s still depth and survival is not granted. The game may feel confusing at the start, though the in-game tasks help point you in the right direction. And after ironing of few kinks this game will be even better Looking forward for future updates with aticipation. 7/10
I decided to give ExoColony a try based on the promise of multi-generation building and terraforming. You don't play with as many colonists as I expected. At one point, nearly all mine colonists were seniors, luckily you can unfreeze young women from the cryochamber as long as you have some. Managing rotation of colonists works well, maybe the lifespan of colonists should be longer. For me real challenges started when colonists morale dropped due to colony size and time spent on the planet. I didn't have problem with lack of oxygen or food at all, but I did run into some issues with water recycling. Overall, I can recommend the game.
ExoColony has a strong foundation, with solid resource management and progression with planet terraformation as the end goal. That said, it still feels a bit rough around the edges – UI can be clunky, and some mechanics feel incomplete (I suppose that will be improved during EA), but it’s Early Access, so it is fine. I have not encounter any bugs that would affect the gameplay. Worth picking up if you are into colony simulation games. 8/10
There's a bug with saves that corrupts your game. When you reload, one of the rooms (usually the ship or the surface) will be empty. After this error, the menu will also be a blank window and won't allow you to load, save, or exit. Only F4 will close the game.
