First part: I fell through the map. I had to restart. Fourth part: stuck in a loop, elevator doors don't close and it doesn't move. I had to restart. From the fricking beginning since there's no save or checkpoint system. Nice enough graphics, sounds and atmosphere for a free game by a solo indie dev, but the numerous game breaking bugs exacerbated by the absence of checkpoints kill the game.
Exit the Abyss is a straightforward, short, barebones Walking Simulator / First Person Horror game.

Although the initial concept of this game sounds interesting, its actual execution is very simplistic.
Exit the Abyss will only take you about an hour to finish, and has no replay value. Nothing to collect, no branching choices, and some very linear sequences despite a couple brief puzzles. There are a couple of cool-looking scenes (one with a bunch of arms / heads sticking out of blood-like walls, another with a bunch of clocks hanging about, and a spiral staircase made out of hospital beds) however the game also comes off as cliche and predictable as well. This very much feels like it was a student project and the developer's first foray into creating a full game. Not to dog on it too much, I still was immersed in the brief settings and was curious enough to play through it all to see what was next. Exit the Abyss relies on a handful of jumpscares (ie loud sound with a scary figure appearing right in your face out of nowhere) and has some decent visuals but nothing that will blow you away. The level / world design can feel like it consists of little more than some ready-made assets pasted repeatedly through the environment. As-is, for the price of admission being only one dollar there are much worse offerings out there for a similar pricepoint. Unfortunately for Exit the Abyss, there are also much better offerings for the same price point. Inoffensive but forgettable, given more time on a project and a bigger budget the developer could probably churn out something better in the future.
Buggy enough that the game can't readily be completed. Having to restart the game after each random crash or progress-halting bug/glitch five or six times, as the game lacks a checkpoint or save system, I lost interest. Levels only partially loading so they can't be completed, randomly falling through the world with no hope for respawn, etc. No voice acting, only subtitles. At best it seems to be a macabre jogging simulator with trivial puzzles and a sprinkle of jump scares.
Very cool, nice looking game, but it's buggy. Kept freezing, and it crashes very easily. And there are no checkpoints, so back to the beginning you go. For a perma-death game, one of the most important things is to have your game be optimized well enough that it doesn't crash so that it's actually fair to the player. This game does not have that, and by the looks of how often this problem has happened to others in the reviews I've read, I can tell it wasn't just random bad luck for me, so I'm not gonna be playing it again. I'm glad it's free or I would be furious. If you want to make a perma-death game you CANNOT have crashes be a frequent problem to players.
