Tremendous disappointment. Even allowing for paradox's habit of releasing incomplete games this one just doesn't work. Like Cities Skylines II, a more in depth simulation is great in theory but you should make sure it actually works before you sell it. I would return this game if it hadn't taken me a few dozen hours to realize it was broken and unlikely to get better any time soon.
They just don't have the vision for this game. A simulation that isn't simulating anything. Economy/trade/colonies are broken. Updates aren't helping.
With this game Paradox, has turned the Europa Universalis franchise from a game into a spread sheet simulator. NOTHING. EVER. HAPPENS. There is just nothing to do in the game. Advances and events might make the nations distinct, but there are some things that are waaaay too universal. For one, WARS! I constantly have fo wait years before I can fight one, and since this game has no mana, there is nothing to do during peacetime. Everything requires time in this game, I have to wait for integration, annexation, war etc. This is nothing but a waiting "game". 90% of the time I play a movie in the background because there is simply nothing to do.
EU4 is still the better game by a lot, don't waste your money
I tried liking this game. I was a believer at first, blinded by the new shiny. Oh what a fool I was. The UI is beyond terrible, some mechanics are baffling at best and stupid at worst, and honestly why do I rather just keep playing EU4? I'm always in favor of switching to new entries in long sagas; did it with Smash Bros, did it with Civ, did it with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Heroes of Might & Magic. But I'll play EU4 for a long, long time before I even consider switching to the next one. And the way things are going, it might just be EU6. Or whatever other game Paradox decides to release, tbh. I'm kind of hooked to their material. Which makes me disliking EU5 so much all the more tragic.
Honestly, this is probably the last time I pay top dollar for a Paradox game. Time and time again they release unfinished slop. On the surface this game looks nice, but it has no soul. It's far from complete. It's not fun, it's tedious, overly complicated, and unengaging. There's been a number of updates and maybe in a few years it will be further along, but we seem well past Paradox's heyday. Very disappointing. On a sidenote, i have 1300+ hours on EUIV.
Disappointed by the launch state and further development. The studio makes one strange design choice after another. I see their vision but I really can't support it if it leads to empty, overly complex mechanics without effect and, which is worse to me, incredibly unhistorical or even insensible outcomes. The game feels sluggish all the time, even on a powerful machine. One might argue over that, but I hate the UI which is neither efficient nor fitting. The UI designers just don't know how to present the interface and its data in an aesthetically pleasing fashion that suits the historic setting. It's corporate-style buttons contrasted with brown backgrounds or overcrowded pictures with glaringly colourful text. What a mess! Just have a look at the government tab or a province overview. Or look at the cluttered top interface which is a space waste in the corners at the same time. Or, for Michelangelo's sake, better don't look at all. Unfortunately, the studio's priorities are off, one update after another. I'm not quite sure I like studio Tinto's approach under Johan's leadership and under Spain's sun. Instead of improving the abysmally bad performance or giving contextual content to the player in systems that actually matter, they crank out mid DLC and updates that, in years prior, would have been considered pre-launch polishing. The changes most important to me have been postponed this week for a year and a half. That's crazy. The studio always presents their "dynamic historic events" like a sacred cow in their posts. But I don't feel the impact of them. There is no intuitive or fun way of seeing the requirements for certain events or possibilities following in the next years. Even playing a country with a well-known history often feels like floating in empty history space – never knowing what comes next or what was before you. I can neither see a permanent plaque or overview somewhere with my diplomatic, military or economic achievements nor is there a mission tree where I could look up my choices and taken paths ... and I think that's what many players want. It's not necessarily the amount of flavour content but the impact and uniqueness of it. I want to remember a playthrough of, let's say, 50 hours! And the next one is not supposed to feel largely the same.
