With lore that doesn’t go anywhere, broken balance and lackluster polishing, ER doesn’t shine in any way to make it worthwhile.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2848289804
In-Depth

Premise, Setting & Writing
As in the best (worst?) horror b-movies, our unnamed protagonist survives a car accident in the middle of a forest, only to realize the nearby town is infested by all sorts of monsters, ranging from demons to bio-abominations. In a very plausible surge of courage, pistol in hand, he charges ahead slinging lead to whatever supernatural creature unfortunate enough to cross his path. “I don’t know where I am, I don’t know what’s going on, I only know I must kill”, as a wise man once said. ER takes place in an unspecified rural town of an unclear, probably made-up country (like Narnia, Serbia or something along those lines) where everything has clearly gone to hell. Between the various, colorful contaminants littering most areas, and the plentiful ritualistic symbols drawn all over, it appears soon enough that this peaceful location has transformed into a nightmare. While the environment ‘does the job’ at conveying a dark atmosphere, the low-quality writing of most files and descriptions found around the world degrades both immersion and worldbuilding. Don’t expect an involving or deep experience at any point, as far as story and lore are concerned.
Exploration & Puzzles
Be it forests, lagoons, factories or subterranean bunkers, the gig is the same: you’ll be wandering about largely linear levels (with a few more ‘open’ exceptions), that prove restrictive even for a Shooter, let alone a Survival Horror (which ER isn’t). While there are some secondary, minimally-diverging paths to find - that often hold a couple resources like ammo or medkits - most levels will still feel like one-way paths without enough expansion, verticality or diversity to result interesting. There are very few proper secrets overall, and they aren’t such a big deal either - some ammo or healing again, just like that crate you found in a corner five minutes ago. There are a few simplistic puzzles that involve finding a switch to open a gate, rotate props in the correct positions, or activate devices in a certain order to make a boss vulnerable. None of them is particularly obscure, and generally they’re all quick to solve or deal with. In case the levels weren’t linear enough, there will be guidance arrows shining on the ground on several occasions as well. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2848290103
Combat System & Bosses
Most areas come packed with reasonably-varied monsters that either are already present or spawn when a certain point is passed, or a specific action (like flipping a switch) is executed. You’ll have a roster of ten total weapons at your disposal, progressively found around the levels, each of them using different ammo types, which are however abundantly present. Special mention to your pistol, which has unlimited bullets that can also travel beyond the screen and hit far-away enemies; this, alongside the generally low enemy speed and their lackluster intelligence, leads to a major issue. Most encounters can actually be cleared by simply backpedaling in a circle while spamming pistol rounds until everything is dead, while stationary enemies can be hit beyond their view range with ease. It feels like all foes are weak, fragile and don't pose much of a threat unless you manage to get cornered, which rarely happens due to their slowness - I never died to normal ones. The other weapons aside from the handgun often deal tremendous damage / DPS, and are best saved for bosses or the rarely-seen bigger hordes of normal mobs - you won’t even need them most of the time, despite there being enough ammo around to use them to your heart’s content if you want to. There’s a grand total of three bosses: one is a bigger copy-paste of a normal ranged enemy, the other is just a melee foe (slowly) chasing you, and the final boss is a stationary, glorified turret with extra steps to make it vulnerable. None of these fights feels epic, and while bosses do hurt a lot for a change, they can easily be kited around or baited into shooting into cover. They have low health compared to the damage most weapons do: a couple shots of powerful weapons like the grenade launcher will be all it takes to dispatch them.
Equipment & Progression
In this “survival horror”, you won’t even have an inventory to manage; all of your findings like ammo or medkits will automatically be added to your total, uncapped for first aid and capped for ammo. There’s nothing else to find besides these things and the new weapons themselves, which don’t require puzzles or special actions to be gained: you’ll find more guns around this little town than in a military base. The other part of the progression is represented by a basic stat system that can be upgraded once your character levels up (you can’t even see the XP left to do so). You may invest points in Speed (as in movement), Healing (medkit usage speed, which always restores 100% of HP anyway, and can be used instantly while on the move already, making this attribute useless) and Accuracy, which greatly improves the Pistol and possibly other bullet-based firearms’ damage: straight up the best investment. Another underwhelming aspect that doesn’t feel like a real improvement of your abilities or equipment most of the time. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2848290023
Twin-stick shooter crossed with survival horror that never gels together well. The game is slow-paced which makes the twin stick mechanic feel out of place and almost the entire game can be easily played with the infinite-ammo pistol, making the "survival" aspects feel moot and most of your arsenal irrelevant. The story is largely incoherent and, again, feels made up of a bunch of different threads that never come together into a full plot: cultists, gene-experiments, a power station thing, a living organic "building", etc. You have zombies but then you have snakemen and machine-gun wielding skeleton soldiers and walking trees and the overall feeling was a stewpot full of "This would be cool" concepts but not enough time to cook into one dish. There ARE some cool ideas in the game if they had picked one theme and leaned into it. And I enjoyed how environments played into the game such as traps that could hurt monsters, destructible fences leading to secret areas, accidentally destroying street lamps and plunging yourself in darkness, etc. Given more time to cook -- more action, more need for other weapons making ammo conservation a factor, a more solid story -- this could be a decent game but it's not there yet. Right now it's more lackadaisical gameplay unsupported by a story to make you want to get through it (or conversely, good enough gameplay to make you ignore the flaws in the story).
A top-down arcade style shooter that doesn't really conform to the norms of that genre, Enemy Remains has a problem: It's slow. A top down arcade style shooter should be frenetic, fast, and satisfying. The character moves at a snails pace, often out sped by environmental traps and enemies. That would be all well and good if you could mount any kind of offense. The guns are unsatisfying and there isn't enough ammo around for anything past the starting infinite pistol. This game is in early access so there is definitely room to improve. The seeds of a good game are here but its just not there yet. I hope the game eventually speeds up the player, adds more ammo, makes the bosses not trivially easy, and fixes a very quiet sound mix. With a few fixes like the ones above, Enemy Remains could transcend it's current playability and become something fantastic. Until then, wait. See what gets updated. It's just not there yet.
A lot of progress since release. Madness shooting, beautiful colors and environment!
Hot like the Inferno pizza. Your ass will sweat.
Storytelliing is by far the best that we have seen from this small indie group. Gameplay is tied to the story nicely, and you actually start to feel the lore coming to life. Hopefully we see more from this group soon!
Yelp Rating: 4/5 Graphics: When starting off in the first level, you are greeted with a wonderful, yet gore-filled map with calm, yet unsettling tones. When making your way through the maps, you will be greeted with much more colors that really bring the eerie feeling of the game. As you adventure throughout the map, you will come across other gore scenes, such as animal intestines and mobs. Gameplay: The concept behind the game is simple. Shooter game, figuring what the hell happened, defeating hostile mobs, along with bosses, which vary if difficulty as you progress. You come across crates filled with loot, traps, explosives, and much more! There are a variety of weapons to use, especially figuring out the best combo for bosses and mob gang-ups. My Experience: I was contacted through social media to try this game out, and I couldn't be more grateful. Although I wish I could dedicate more time to playing through the levels, to try out the different difficulty settings, as well as to full get a grip on the storyline, from what I can see, the game has a lot of potential. There are a few issues that I encountered of course (hence beta/early access.) There are a few levels in which the mob spawn rate is overwhelming, resulting in nearly rage-quit fits as it seems impossible to defeat. However, that does not mean the game is overall bad. The camera angle that we are given can also be a bit tricky to work with, especially when trying to enter/see around structures. Though, I like to think of it as a way to test my strategic skills. I do, however, think the price is a bit much, but I still have more of the game to experience - so I can't make a complete judgement on that just yet. Overall: If you want to try something new, with the cost in mind, that will get you out of your seat, then this is the game :)
