Elise the Devil

Oddly, I was expecting another bad but mildly enjoyable cheaply made foreign RPG. You know, the ones who have horrible English writing and play more like a pornographic game off of a porn site over being an enjoyable game and I am quite pleased to try this one. And while it does have an underlying sexual theme to it, at least it isn't forced and when you are naked, it is worth giving this game 5 star just for not making your characters breast overly huge but quite small and even knowing the enemy all seem to still want to rape you when you do lose....at least for once it isn't a forced loss and at least so far, you don't need to see a sex schene whatsoever. I just wish that the character was more like what she is named, as it is nice to play as the villian but remove the name "Devil", she might as well be the Hero of the story. There really isn't anything telling the player by showing that she is the devil or evil in any way other than a mild "Spell" or "Armor" name...you might as well be the hero or even the "Anti Hero". It is a fun game though and the Sakuragame company is doing better, lets just hope that they spend more time in an English writing course but I would highly suggest buying it for the $2 USD asking price. Even more so that you get two free games with it this week that you could even just trade if you already have them. 5/5 stars for what you pay for it.

The story focused on an archdevil Iblis. A party of heroes led by Sean (Chiot in official version, Sion in fan translated version) fought against Iblis to restore peace to the entire world. Iblis was left for dead, but the archdevil returned as a cute young girl, renamed herself Elise(Iris in fan translated version), and embarked on a quest to become stronger and exact revenge on the humans for turning her into a weak young girl who was a pale shadow of her former self. [h1]Plot[/h1] The game has numerous translation errors in the English version where the story is understandable for the most part, but I would recommend downloading and installing a fan translation patch by NHxD at Github to bring out the character development and improve the story. Although, the author has stated upfront that the translation does not follow the original Japanese script entirely. This fan translation patch also fixes the faulty item names and descriptions, adds a variety of colours to certain words in the game, new icons for combat options, scene names to every map, and some bells and whistles, improving the overall quality of this JRPG. Briefly, I liked the storyline about how a proud demon queen is reduced to a weak vulnerable girl, and overcame insurmountable odds to fight back and defeat various monsters and would-be rapists to defend herself and exact revenge on the heroes who defeated her. [h1]Gameplay[/h1] This game has the typical JRPG fare using RPG Maker assets. You control your party in an 8-bit map and travel around in an open world map where new areas and tougher monsters are unlocked as your character levels up and acquires better weapons and equipment. There is some amount of grinding, but nothing overly tedious as it is possible for Elise to reach the maximum level of 99 in about 10 hours or so, and there is a special item that will completely remove all random encounters later on in the game. There is also an additional mechanic in the exploit and lewdness level where the player will have to partake in numerous adult events to fully unlock all the adult content. I didn't explore this aspect as I was going for a full virgin playthrough until the good ending with Sean, although players have reported this part is quite grindy. Luckily, fans of the game have provided an uncensored patch with a save file including all H-events, CGs, and 18+ voice acting unlocked for players to enjoy. [h1]Visuals[/h1] The artwork is a major highlight of this game which prompted me to write this review, given that the publisher has been removing a number of their adult games from Steam with very little notice. The protagonist has impressive character sprite artwork with a variety of facial expressions and clothing to bring out the adult content and lewdness. Even if the player chooses to avoid all the H scenes and keep the game censored, the artwork alone is worth more than the price of the game in Steam. [h1]Audio[/h1] Most of the background music is used from the RPG Maker software collection that I have heard before from other RPG Maker games. Nevertheless, the BGM are well-chosen as they highlight the difference when Elise goes over to a Japanese kingdom in the East from a medieval Western kingdom, and they help to bring out the best moments in the game such as after Elise wins a particularly difficult boss battle. It is quite a shame that what is done right in this area is let down by an awkward translation and the voice acting is only limited to the H-scenes. [h1]Overall thoughts[/h1] [i]Elise the Devil[/i] is a great bargain for an adult JRPG that is sold at a fraction of the price in Steam compared to the original Japanese version. It offers a little over 10 hours of gameplay without being excessively grindy, and it has cute and attractive artwork, Steam profile backgrounds and emoticons. The English version was let down by an undesirable translation and poor quality control that makes it hard for players to enjoy what is being offered. Although the fan translation patch and mod at Github do not follow the original Japanese script entirely nor change the text in the H scenes, they address most of the issues that users have raised in Steam community forums. Given this new development, I can highly recommend [i]Elise the Devil[/i] as a great bargain of an adult doujin JRPG offering on Steam. If you are torn about picking up this title or not, it may be worth grabbing now as it may potentially be removed from Steam in the future based on previous trends. [b]ELISE THE DEVIL {ETD}[/b] is a JRPG involving Elise's, the Female Protagonist, adventure questing through multiple maps, occasional dungeons, and turn-based Battle modes. At the time of this review, ETD is on sale for a mere [b]$0.59 US[/b] { a 70% discount }. The game play is decent in a typical JRPG / RPG Maker style. The Female characters are Voice-Acted in Japanese ... Nobody wants to hear the guys anyway :steammocking:. Choices do make a difference and there are multiple endings or “GAME OVERs”. There are plenty of slots for [b]Saves, SO make frequent use of them.[/b] There is a tableau of Graphic Images to fill-in by reaching certain game points. Most Guides are in Japanese { or perhaps Chinese ? - not sure } or in a poor, Google-translated, English {?}. There are frequent hentai activities in the game with the sensitive bits fuzzed or clouded over. A significant source of Elise's funds for Weapons and Magic upgrades, and supplies, arise from ♥♥♥; the “World's Oldest Profession”, although there is an option for a Censored mode. As yet, I have not tried the censored options, but will follow up here if this mode has significant effects on game play. [b][u]EDIT[/u]:[/b] Game "censorship" is achieved on an event-by-event basis by selecting the [b]"No"[/b] or other negative choice when Prostitution options occur. This will result in a significant reduction in Gold gain. Thus, Elise would have to compensate by staying out longer in the “wilderness” battling Monsters for items and lower Gold amounts. Desirable armor, weapons, and magic items become increasingly expensive as Elise progresses. Other "Hentai" events may be avoided by Elise's never losing a big BOSS Battle :D [b]Minor [u]SPOILER ALERT[/u]:[/b] At game-start, Elise is known as the Devil Iblis and is losing a battle with the “Lancelot-like” Hero Chiot and his companions. Assuming Iblis is dead, Chiot et al depart. However, Iblis has survived, but now is in the form of a cute, weak, small-breasted girl – Elise; the other Female characters more than make up for Elise's small endowment. She vows to regain her lost powers, get revenge on Chiot and his companions, and conquer the World. Can Elise gain revenge successfully? She must quest throughout the world to successfully regain her strength { Level Ups } and magic powers in order to be able to stand up to Hero Chiot's formidable abilities. Or will a weakened Elise degenerate into life as a sex slave? Should she lose a Boss Battle, Elise may be subjected to unspeakably degrading indignities. The game provides for auto-rematches should that occur. ETD is an enjoyable play and certainly is well worth the below $1 US price in entertainment value, provided one can get past the Hentai action.

I tried. I really tried to finish the game, but I'm going to shelve it indefinitely. Why? Worst translated game I've ever played. And I have had my share of poorly translated games, but this was super lazy. To make matters worse, the text doesn't fit in the boxes and you can't read the whole item description. A fan patch was made to change the font so more could be fit into the boxes as a semi fix. there is also a missing feature in the game that needed a fan patch. Also 18+ content has a fan patch. I wish the support from the developers came in the form of an update patch, rather than promotion. That said, I'm hopeful to return to this game after a patch or 2. I like the twist of playing the devil who fell from power and now tries to regain her former self and extract revenge on the hero. I didn't feel stuck anywhere (though i didn't finish). I will also admit, the cg was well done for the scenes. tldr; translation is the worst. story is interesting. cg is good if you download patch.

No. Just....no. I really want to like this game. I like the idea of the story, and progression isn't bad. However....that English translation has ruined it for me. Half of the time it doesn't make sense, the other half....it still doesn't make sense. Ruins scenes for me. If you only care about pictures, you should have a great time. But if you want the narrative that goes with it to enhance those parts....you are buying the wrong game.

I bought this while on a quest to find a decent r18 game as it appears most of what's getting thrown on steam at the moment are minimal effort, cash grab, already existing on dlsite, ported over, rpgmaker games or rearrange the tile h-games. I saw this was released by the same publisher responsible for bringing us mirror ( which was awesome ), the game got relatively good reviews and at $2 I figured I'd give it a try, despite looking like your typical, run of the mill rpgmaker h-game. Where do I even start. The first thing I noticed was the awkward and stiff dialogue, which only got worse as I got further in. The translation for this is terrible. Think pigeon english x10. It's understandable but it's awkward to read and at times, almost incomprehensible. I started skipping the dialogue as a result. Strike one for poor translations. The second thing I noticed was what I thought was some sort of a flare effect over your character. This game uses the "your current health effects your clothing" system, so when you start running low on health more and more of the characters body is exposed. When this happened I noticed that the characters, cough breasts cough, had some sort of weird lighting on them. I didn't think much of it until I got to the first h-scene in the game. It wasn't some lighting issue, this game is censored. And I mean really censored. Poorly censored too. It looked like they had taken the individual images, threw them into MS paint or something, and then used an airbrush to white out offending areas. The final result being that huge portions of the H scenes have these awkward white squares so you can't see much of what's going on. No mosaic or anything. Just poorly made white blotches that take up large portions of the screen. Strike two for censoring. Strike three for doing it in the ugliest, most intrusive way possible. The other issue is that this game, like a lot of other rpgmaker h-games, flips assets to the extreme. I've heard the same exploration and "down and dirty" music from so many of these games now that they've started haunting me in my sleep. It's the same for the non-player sprites, buildings, terrains and in-battle non-boss enemies. Is it really so hard to make your own assets? Evenicle did it. Treasure Hunter Claire did it ( for the sprites and some of the enemies at least ). Why is this so difficult? It only takes away from your game when you're using the exact same sprites, enemies and sounds that countless other games have used. Strike four for asset flipping. All in all, I'm disappointed. I didn't lose much as it was just $2 so I'm not too upset, but so little effort was put into this translated release that it's almost amusing. I complain a lot about Kagura putting out these low effort, asset flip, already exists on DLSite games at an alarming rate, but at least their translations are servicable and they uncensor their releases for western audiences. This easily takes the cake for being the lowest effort h-game I've seen thus far. No I never finished it. I probably never will because there are better games and if what people are saying is true, I don't want trudge through 8 hours of a typical rpg maker gameplay that's been poorly translated and heavily censored.
