Despite their greatness, they were all the same wiped out near-completely, when resource excavation on a planetary scale caused the destruction of their home world. After spending centuries in hibernation on a lonely ship, you’re revived by the on-board computer AI, which then proceeds to explain the somber state of things. After that, you decide to visit some important planets that once belonged to your now-defunct race, in order to gather precious resources and find out if there may be any survivors. To make things harder, it seems that over time these places became home to new inhabitants, ranging from wild animals to undead and everything in-between, which don’t take too kindly on your visits. Despite a brilliant opening cutscene and equally impressive chapter-ending ones, there won’t be many story events upon which Dwarfenstein elaborates upon at any point. The occasional two-lines dialogue with your robotic assistant, and little else, will compose the entirety of the available lore material.
General Gameplay
Each visited planet will have a series of extraction points rich in resources: those are what you’ll need to continue your journey - they must be protected from the local monsters, inescapably attracted to the machinery. Drilling rigs are automatically placed around relatively small maps, which contain secondary deposits of Blue Crystals (currency) and Red Gems (health), that need to be manually excavated with weapons fire. Somewhat hidden, collectible Part Containers will also be present, useful for a yet-mysterious purpose back on the ship. Now, you may think this is a Tower Defense, but it’s not. Waves of enemies will come every X seconds sure, and you also have to defend one or more structures alright, but that’s where it stops. Most of the three classes don’t have towers to place, and those who do, have them in temporary form, more akin to active skills than traditional ones that persist and can be upgraded, destroyed, sold, moved. You’ll be a one-dwarf army against all invaders, without any other help. The FPS component is much more predominant in the gameplay than Tower Defense will ever be. Once a level is dealt with, you’ll be able to go back on your ship and proceed to the next stage, or replay the very same one at an increased difficulty to find more parts, gain currency and test your mettle against increased enemy numbers. Stages don’t really change or feel novel at different difficulties, it’s just more enemies, more hard-hitting, but little else of note. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2808701189
Combat System
Clearly inspired by old-school FPS, Dwarfenstein’s combat system sports three different weapons for each class, each with a regular and alternate fire mode. All weapons except one have unlimited ammo, although some have an overheating mechanic to prevent spam. The enemy hordes are relentless, featuring dozens of mobs at a time, either converging on you or onto the excavators, to destroy them. If a drill takes damage or is even demolished, there’s no penalty to level score or gains - you’ll simply lose completely when all of them are destroyed. Skill-based feats like headshots, dashing to avoid enemy shots and compensating for some weapons’ falloff contribute in making the combat feel dynamic, enemies generally do hit pretty hard, with healing being quite scarce. Bosses are literally a footnote, proving less dangerous and involving that most enemy hordes, and really unremarkable. Death comes with a ten-second respawn penalty, a time in which enemies are free to pummel your structures. It has to be said two of the three classes are tremendously under-powered, with the Engineer reigning supreme thanks to not only the best overall skill set, but also some of the most lethal weapons around. The other classes, while they have some good skills and weapons, just feel like a downgrade even when fully-upgraded, compared to the mighty wrench-jockey.
Progression & Upgrades
Once back to the ship, you’ll be awarded some currency for completing the level at hand, other than the extra amount you excavated manually. This can be used to unlock skills, weapons and passive perks to assign to each class, such as double drills health, extra damage, faster movement speed and more. They’re all kinda pricey, so it will take a while for maxing out all three classes, and a lot more to get all the perks - not that you want to do that, since only a couple are actually good. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2808852385
Optional Modes & Other Content
Endless mode, pitting you against infinite enemies in four different maps, becomes available once the game is completed. Also, the elusive secret level may open up if you did things right… or not. This gives some more content to those that want to do all achievements or just have more of the same, but Endless doesn’t differ much from a regular, infinite level at all.

Its use in cutscenes ties up the backstory and links up the acts and levels of story mode in a logical way. ːfssnipeː It may seem like there are too few classes, but their skills generate a uniqueness to playstyle, as to deliver a different experience to each one. Thus providing the potential to replay the story and/or survival modes in a different way, three times. My favourite class was the engineer and their use of towers. ːfssnipeː A lean perk system that requires crystals to unlock, brings balance to character builds, but at the cost of possible strategies. Not all perks will be worth using with each class and the limit of only two selectable ones per run, ensures that playing story-mode is challenging. I do wonder if additional perks should be granted in survival mode every 25 or so waves, to make for a better scaled experience. ːfssnipeː Though diverse enough in themselves the number of weapons the player can use is quite low and only buffed in what they offer by a few alternative options and firing modes. While this may be another sign of balance for the story mode, providing many more options to try in survival mode would have helped extend play time.
BALANCE vs DIFFICULTY
ːfssnipeː Interesting take on dying sees, the player can die as many times as they can manage in a level. The important thing is to ensure the mining equipment remains intact. ːfssnipeː A short but capable tutorial is enough to explain the basics of the game. Its just a shame that it cannot be bypassed after the first time of completion. ːfssnipeː Enemy variety and composition over the survival mode becomes challenging after the 30th wave. In story mode though they are better balanced. While their spawning from fixed points allows the player to be better prepared, the sheer volume of enemies generated means that it is difficult to choose targets in a sedate order. ːfssnipeː The way enemies attack is rather basic with mobs closing down the player as fast as they can. Ranged opponents shoot in such numbers and frequency that it becomes important for the player to be constantly moving or behind cover when initiating their own attacks. The most interesting enemy method of attacks are the ones that sprint and lunge at the player when in range.
REPLAYABILITY vs LONGEVITY
ːfssnipeː Content is on the small-side for a game of this type, with an emphasis on replayability. ːfssnipeː With a dozen levels for the story mode, maps are not diverse enough, nor do they have any dynamic or supporting elements to contribute to varying gameplay to any degree. ːfssnipeː Only four survival maps is a big disappointment, with this mode really needing many more to give it additional longevity.

For more BREAKDOWNS & OBSERVATIONS check out this link:
Full Review

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2855358664
VERDICT:
Given its replayable content, balanced design, quality of build and very low price, Dwarfenstein is a good example of a game that surpasses the sum of its parts. Its wave-based gameplay may not be AAA, but neither is the price. Just ensure your graphics card is up to spec or expect severe lagging in the latter waves of survival mode. Its certainly WORTHWHILE if you are hunting for a more personal, unsophisticated and rather short-lived, strafe-shooting experience.
No Tower, All Defense
Although Dwarfenstein is a neat little game, especially when looked at as a work of a lone developer, it still suffers from a certain kind of crisis: the crisis of the identity kind. Its name evokes the imagery of a boomer shooter. Its store page describes it as a story-driven FPS, tower defence hybrid. Yet, aside from the obvious first-person perspective, the game can’t quite measure up to what’s advertised. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2808702225 Dwarfenstein is about a lone dwarf in space; and like most, if not all, games about dwarves in space, this one is a story of jumping from planet to planet, robbing them of precious minerals and annihilating their populations in the process. Booting up the game for the first time, you get an impressive-looking cutscene introducing you to the world and the storyline, which is then, unfortunately, undercut by a narration, done by the most basic-sounding, text-to-speech programme. Meanwhile, the writing itself has notable room for improvement. This kind of a shaky start might lead you to believe that the game is a barebones abomination of store-bought assets, but by the time you’ve finished the tutorial and played a couple of levels, the visuals will have started to grow on you, and the gameplay will reveal itself to be the focus. In spite of the game being described as a story-driven experience, the narrative in Dwarfenstein amounts to the aforementioned introduction, the twist at the end, and a one-note plot stringing them together: there’s a bubble of text from the game’s only character, other than yourself, at the beginning of each level, but these are kind of jarring when compared to the tone established by the cutscene earlier. As for the levels, they all have the exact same goal. Outside of a bit near the end, which comes as too little - too late, the story doesn’t inform the gameplay nearly enough for the experience to be considered story-driven. The gameplay has a bit more meat on its bones, though not by much. The tutorial does a good job of laying out the basics: the weapons at your disposal all have an alternate fire mode, while holding down the right mouse button can either freeze enemies, execute them while they’re stunned, or reel in the weapons from their hands so they can be thrown for extra damage. There are also abilities you can cast, as well as a sort of double-jump that turns into a dash with the second press of the spacebar. It’s all quite hectic and provides that good ol’, fast-paced, meaty action that retro shooters are known for. The sound design for all the weapons ain’t that bad, either. Once you start looking past that, however, the game comes up lacking. The level design is pretty straightforward: arenas with specified spawn points for enemies to pour out of in waves, as you dispatch them before they can destroy the equipment gathering those precious minerals for you. This is where the “tower defence” aspect of the game is supposed to come in, but Dwarfenstein has no towers for you to place. As such, there’s no point to the timer in-between the waves, since there’s nothing you can do other than wait. The arenas themselves are mostly open, with no specific paths for enemies to follow. They just beeline it, either for your equipment or for you. Some enemies will prioritize a different target, but it gets old fast, and you’ll have a surefire strategy only after a level or two. Different stages have you fighting different enemy factions, but it seems as though their tactics do not change. They’re basically reskinned versions of each other: the faction in the first stage has stone giants as their siege unit, the second faction giant ogres – and so on, you get the picture. When there’s almost no variety and no strategy, what else is there? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2808705639 In an attempt to give you at least some choice in how to approach the levels, the game provides three classes to choose from, each time you start one. You’ve got Gunner, Engineer, and Electrician, each with their own set of weapons and abilities, purchased with minerals collected during (and awarded on completion of) previous levels. While every ability and weapon must be bought for each class separately, they all choose from the same pool of perks. As heartbreaking as it is, I must say that the class system and its progression are severely misguided. For starters, each class plays the same at its core, and their weapons are quite poorly balanced. There are numerous redundancies, and it becomes quickly apparent what the best class is. Gunner's second weapon is, essentially, his only one, as it is a straight upgrade from his first, while his third is the only weapon in the game with a limited number of uses per level. On the other hand, Engineer has access to a high-damage dealing crossbow that one-shots most enemies with no drawbacks, as well as a fast-firing machine gun that allows you to mow down hordes with little difficulty. Electrician’s weapon selection is by far the worst, pretty much consisting of weaker versions of the other weapons in the game, and I’m convinced his starting weapon’s alternate fire is broken; either its projectile’s trajectory doesn’t line up with the crosshair, or its hitbox makes it sometimes pass through enemies. Oh, and there’s also a pickaxe that all classes have access to, though there’s no reason to use it whatsoever. As far as abilities are concerned, they’re thematically different enough, but the Engineer still reigns supreme, as his turrets can affect the battlefield for a longer period than the “fire and forget” abilities of the other two dwarves. It’s also the only time the game resembles a tower defence in the way it plays out, even if still isn't in the traditional sense of the genre. Choosing a different class in Dwarfenstein from the one you’ve been playing up until that point always feels bad, as the necessity for anything aside from the starting gun having to be unlocked with minerals means you’ll be going back to square one, with next to nothing to differentiate the experiences of the two. You're, essentially, going back to playing a worse version of the same character. The pool of perks everyone gets to pick from doesn’t help either, as the high costs of these will lead to them being among the last things you buy. Even then, they’re just static crutches that don’t mix up the gameplay in any way: increase weapon damage, increase movement speed, double player health… Once you find the two stats you consider the most lacking, as you can only have two perks active during a level, you’ll probably stick with them ‘til the very end. Still, if you end up wanting to play more after beating the story mode, but are dissuaded by its shortcomings, there is a survival one which unlocks afterwards and plays out closer to the game's strengths, as it pitches your favourite class setup against countless waves of enemies.
Verdict
All that said, Dwarfenstein stands as an unpolished mix of several genres that ends up going almost nowhere, both in its narrative and progression. While one can't be too hard on it, as it is a project of a one-man dev team, you're probably better off playing anything else that aims to be a tower defence with real-time combat - at least in its current state. Who knows! It is billed as Dwarfenstein: Chapter 1 in some of its art, so maybe there'll be something more worthwhile here in the future. At the very least, it is a solid game at its heart, and that's more than most one-man projects can say for themselves.
This is incredibly cool. The art is bright, colorful, and interesting. It has a throbbing soundtrack and some amazing gun play. For the $5 you pay for the game, you are getting a HUGE amount of value. It has a campaign and a story and is pretty funny. This is great fun and a no brainer to pick up right now! https://youtu.be/AOSq56rZ72o
