Dungeon & Derision is a free-to-play tactical role-playing game developed and published by Alexis Angely that combines classic turn-based combat with roguelike progression. Rather than emphasizing cinematic storytelling or high-end visuals, the game concentrates on delivering a strategic experience where every encounter requires careful planning. Set on a dangerous island controlled by a powerful ruler, players recruit heroes, battle hostile creatures, and gradually strengthen their party while uncovering the challenges hidden throughout the land. Its old-school design philosophy is immediately apparent, making it especially appealing to fans of traditional strategy RPGs that value gameplay depth over flashy presentation. Combat serves as the heart of the experience and consistently rewards patience and intelligent decision-making. Every battle demands thoughtful positioning, efficient use of each character's abilities, and careful consideration of enemy strengths and weaknesses. Charging into encounters without a plan often leads to costly mistakes, encouraging players to evaluate every move before committing. The turn-based structure provides enough room to experiment with different tactics, making victories feel satisfying because they are earned through strategy instead of quick reflexes. One of the game's most interesting features is its roguelike structure, which keeps each expedition unpredictable. Procedurally generated elements and random events ensure that no adventure unfolds exactly the same way twice. Along the journey, players encounter situations that require meaningful choices, with decisions capable of influencing both immediate survival and long-term progress. These unpredictable moments prevent exploration from becoming repetitive while adding a sense of uncertainty that complements the game's challenging nature. Character progression offers another layer of depth through individual talent trees that allow heroes to specialize in different roles. Players can shape their party according to their preferred strategy, whether prioritizing offense, defense, or supportive abilities. This customization encourages experimentation across multiple playthroughs, as different combinations of heroes and skills can significantly change how battles unfold. Permanent progression systems also soften the frustration of failure by allowing future runs to benefit from previous accomplishments, creating a satisfying cycle of learning and improvement. The inclusion of permanent death raises the stakes considerably. Losing a hero is a meaningful setback that forces players to value every encounter and avoid unnecessary risks. While this mechanic may feel unforgiving at times, it successfully reinforces the importance of tactical planning and resource management. The balance between harsh consequences and lasting upgrades creates a rewarding progression loop that motivates players to refine their strategies instead of relying on luck alone. Visually, Dungeon & Derision embraces a retro pixel-art style that suits its gameplay well. Character sprites, environments, and battle animations remain simple yet functional, ensuring that combat remains easy to read without overwhelming the player with unnecessary visual effects. The fantasy setting is supported by a nostalgic aesthetic that recalls classic strategy titles while maintaining enough personality to establish its own identity. Although the graphics are modest compared to larger productions, they complement the game's mechanical focus effectively. The game's relatively small scope is perhaps its biggest limitation. Players looking for an extensive story, fully voiced characters, or highly detailed world-building may find the experience somewhat minimal. Repetition can also emerge after many hours despite the procedural elements, and the demanding difficulty may discourage newcomers unfamiliar with tactical roguelikes. Even so, these aspects feel like deliberate design choices aimed at players who appreciate mastering systems through repeated attempts rather than experiencing a narrative-driven adventure. Overall, Dungeon & Derision succeeds by offering a focused blend of tactical combat, roguelike progression, meaningful character customization, and replayability. Its mechanics encourage careful planning, experimentation, and continuous improvement, making every successful run feel rewarding. While it lacks the production values of larger strategy RPGs, its well-designed gameplay systems and free-to-play accessibility make it a worthwhile experience for fans of challenging tactical adventures. The game is quite fun to be honest, and quite easy to break with cheat engine, so, if you want to casually boot it up and try to win a run, do it, It'l take some hours if you go for a evocation build. The game has just some light comedy put into it, aswell as some heavier stuff, so no, this isn't technically a "Rated for everyone" game, it has some kinky stuff in the dungeon (Yeah, you can imagine what kind of dungeon, can't you?), so the age rating is incorrect in my sincere opinion, I don't think kids are supposed to see BDSM stuff as items and enemies, yeah... What I do have to say honestly is that, If you want to waste some hours of your life, do it, it's not that bad...except for the final boss, I tried him twice and twice he just disabled me from doing any moves (Even with me having AP left on everyone) and just slooowly killed me without I being able to do anything, except hit "End turn", so yeah, ♥♥♥♥ the throne room, It is not winnable (Or I got unlucky and it glitched twice, which is possible).
I'll give the game a 7/10. It is a bit rough around the edges graphically, but that is sort of part of the charm. Disappointed that you can't move through ally space and that consumables don't work, or at least I can't figure it out.
