Very good tool.
The Dev is actively working on it and engages with the community. I've paid for the full version after using the free one for 2 days, which should indicate that I fully support this program. I look forward to what the future holds.
Fun small table top game. It's easy to understand.

"Dudes on a Map: Virtual Grid Paper" is not a game, although it has been launched on Steam Early Access as if it was one. It's unclear if this is a deliberate attempt to mislead gamers, or a genuine mistake from developers who don't know the difference between software applications which are not games, and things that are actually games. There's no gameplay loops here, as the title suggests, this is "virtual grid paper", or basically a lame ripoff of other software (not game) products like Roll20 that facilitate being a GM for a table top game. Unfortunately since this has been launched as a game, and not in the Steam Software section where things that are software but not games belong, I have to review this as a game, and it fails, because it isn't one. Even if it was, well, there's no game loops, and the interface looks like a HTML webpage more than a game. The art assets are pretty bad, too. This pales in comparison to existing, established pen and paper RPG software utilities. A warning here, the developer attempts to collect information from people using this software, although you can opt-out, there's no guarantee this function works, so gamers should treat this software as spyware regardless of the developers stated intention regarding their data harvesting. You can call me untrusting if you like, but that's the world we live in... a world where software developers launch software on Steam under the guise of games, and despite not even finishing the software, they manage to bake a full spyware telemetry stack into the application. Wow. Who does that? So while this software (not game) is currently "free", it's not necessarily trustworthy. And it's not even free, really, because the developer also has their hand out for $15 USD worth of DLC for this non-game, despite the fact they haven't even finished it, it's deep in development hell. Remember, if the product is free (or even just looks like it's free when it isn't, $15 DLC, holy crap), YOU are the product. Stay safe out there.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer acknowledges that the software contains unnecessary and invasive data harvesting and just offers a "just trust me" approach. That's not acceptable and prospective customers of this software are duly warned. The developer admits this is not a game but they deliberately and wilfully bypassed Valve's process for listing software to try scam the system and publish software as a game!. The developer admits they knew the right thing and the wrong thing to do and deliberately did the wrong thing. This is completely and utterly unacceptable and the sheer audacity and gall from the developer to flagrantly admit they're polluting Steam with things that aren't games is a sheer insult to gamers everywhere. The developer then proudly talks about how happy they are they broke the rules and tried to make gaming worse for everyone. I'm tempted to flag this for Valve to review now that the developer has openly admitted they broke the rules and published software in the wrong place.
Fantastic piece of software, the maps load very quickly, the controls and menus are intuitive, and there's plenty of display options to indicate objects to your players instead of just yelling at them and slamming your keyboard.
Dudes on a Map is a better alternative to Fantasy Grounds or Roll 20 for tabletop RPG groups that are already familiar with the mechanics of the game they plan and just need a map and tokens. It is easily the best map program I have tried, for those purposes, beating out Fantasy Grounds, Roll 20, Arkenforge, Foundry, and the new version of Owlbear Rodeo (RIP to the superior original Owlbear Rodeo). Try it out, it's astonishing how fast and intuitive is compared to the more popular alternatives!
Even in the early state that its in, Dudes is the most intuitive Virtual table top that I have used. In conjunction with Dungeon Alchemist you can go from an idea to running your game in 30 minutes. It just works. (the grid wizard is aptly named because it is magical). i appreciate the work that has been done on this software so far and hope to see it get the recognition that it deserves in the future.
phenomenal. absolutely amazing. 9/10 charred goblins. Needs an option for hidden chests/doors that you can just cover with a floor tile. Tokens for these are garish, and leaving the fog is obvious. If im just a dumdum and this is already in, 10/10 troll tooth trophies. enjoy gaming without getting the plague! (tip, have 3 tokens for monsters. a normal, a bloody for when they are at very low health, and (optional) a pile of viscera for corpses to loot.)
This is a fantastic program, I love the fact that it is simple and intuitive, no fluff no muss, I use it for my gaming table (television installed in table) connected to a laptop and it works perfectly, I can load any map...add a grid if I need one. Its fast and not bogged down with extras. Its a tool that works for my game and does not overtake my game with fluff.
