Okay...so... the game is definitely good, but it definitely involved a lot of random clicking and combinations. Even after 3 hours of trial and error, I still couldn't get the good ending without looking up a walk-through. The story line is creative, but a little shaky. Not entirely a bad thing though. Overall I thought it was a pleasant game with some great aspects, a few laughs, and a pretty cute and wholesome love story!

"Drowning Cross" is a weak LGBTQIA+ friendly retro pixel (esque) ripoff of games like Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle only really bad (LucasArts were kind enough to allow Monkey Island to be remastered twice, so they knew the industry moves on and improves). Before we get into the technicals, where this immediately fails, it's worth pointing out the puzzles in the game and the writing are a shockingly bad cringefest that should be avoided. This features really godawful, lazy pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. To make matters worse, not all of the "art" is 2D retro pixel, which means the game fails to come across as an authentic game, and as a modern game, it also fails to achieve any visual quality marks... it's a complete failure. What matters is that this looks bad because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. This is "free" enough, at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
Drowning Cross is a free, classic point-and-click game that captures the essence of old Sierra and Lucas Arts titles. The pixel art is visually appealing, and the dark-toned story adds intrigue. The vibes reminded me Ken Gao's games, even if it's not nearly as deep. While the game is short and the puzzles aren't always top-notch, it still provides an enjoyable. There is also some reference to monkey island in some puzzle, if you are a fan you'll notice that. Overall, it's a nice adventure worth trying. It's rare to find such good titles for free.
Funny retro point and click! :D
💧 Drowning Cross – Socks, Sorrows & Soul-searching Great writing and witty dialogue. I’ve noticed that visual novels with LGBTQ themes often deliver the most heartfelt, thought-provoking stories — and this is no exception. The plot deepens near the end, getting a little trippy (that well sequence??), and then hits you right in the feels. Why are queer stories always so sad? Took me 4 run-throughs to get all achievements (thanks, socks). No regrets. Struggle Rating: ★★☆☆☆ – A few layers deep, emotionally and narratively. Xjur says: “Some stories take you places — this one drags you down a well of emotion.”
It comes with the traditional frustrations that seem to be inherent to the point-and-click genre, but an incredibly heartfelt story that's shockingly deep for a free game. Glad I played it, and will probably continue to play it until 100%
Drowning Cross wasn't a bad game by any means. I really loved the story even though i found it to be sad. 10/10
