Drift (Over) Drive, developed by Retraissance and published by New Reality Games, is a top-down arcade racing title that centers almost entirely on the art of drifting rather than traditional race structure. Instead of focusing on competitive lap times, grid starts, or head-to-head racing intensity, the game builds its identity around sliding through corners, chaining drifts, and accumulating points through stylish, sustained control. It positions itself as a lightweight, retro-inspired experience that blends simplicity with a dedicated drifting mechanic. From the outset, Drift (Over) Drive makes it clear that scoring is the core objective. Players earn points based on the length, angle, and consistency of their drifts, encouraging controlled slides rather than straightforward acceleration. The more fluidly and confidently a player can maintain a drift without crashing or losing momentum, the higher the reward. This points system forms the backbone of progression, as accumulated scores can be spent on unlocking new vehicles and applying performance upgrades. Rather than a narrative-driven campaign, advancement is tied directly to mechanical mastery and repetition. The top-down perspective gives the game an old-school arcade feel. This camera angle simplifies spatial awareness and keeps the focus on timing and positioning. Steering mechanics revolve around managing throttle and directional input to initiate and sustain slides. While easy to grasp at a basic level, maintaining long, uninterrupted drifts requires practice. Vehicles carry noticeable momentum, and oversteering can quickly lead to spinning out if corrections are mistimed. However, the physics model leans toward accessibility rather than realism, favoring forgiving handling over strict simulation. Track design offers some environmental variation, with different layouts and occasional weather changes influencing grip and responsiveness. Some tracks emphasize wide, flowing turns suited for extended drifts, while others introduce tighter corners that demand more precise inputs. Weather effects subtly adjust handling, adding minor layers of challenge. Although the environments are not especially detailed or expansive, they provide enough diversity to prevent immediate monotony during shorter play sessions. Visually, the game embraces a straightforward aesthetic. The presentation prioritizes clarity and readability over advanced graphical effects. Cars, roads, and environmental elements are cleanly rendered without excessive ornamentation. The minimalist approach suits the arcade nature of the gameplay, though it may feel sparse compared to more modern racing titles. Audio design follows a similar pattern, offering functional engine sounds and background music without drawing significant attention. Where Drift (Over) Drive divides players is in depth and longevity. The core loop—drift, earn points, upgrade, repeat—remains consistent throughout. While satisfying in short bursts, the absence of varied race modes, structured tournaments, or competitive AI opponents limits long-term engagement. The progression system offers incremental improvement but does not dramatically alter gameplay mechanics. For players seeking a robust career mode or dynamic racing scenarios, the experience may feel thin. Technical execution has also been a mixed point for some users. While the game runs smoothly for many, occasional reports of performance or compatibility issues highlight the challenges faced by smaller indie releases. The lack of extensive polish or quality-of-life enhancements further emphasizes its modest production scale. Ultimately, Drift (Over) Drive is best understood as a focused drifting sandbox rather than a comprehensive racing simulator. Its charm lies in its simplicity and its dedication to sliding mechanics over competitive racing drama. For players who enjoy refining drift control in a low-pressure, arcade-style setting, it can provide enjoyable, casual entertainment. Those expecting deeper systems, competitive structure, or simulation-level physics may find its scope limited. Within its niche, however, it offers a straightforward and accessible drifting experience built around momentum, style, and steady improvement. Rating: 5/10
So bad
