A type of game I have been silently waiting for. As someone who spent thousands of hours on Splatoon 2, seeing a inspired game now on Steam, I had to get it. Characters, stages, and general kits are pretty cool, but there are already a lot of things that give me the impression that the game is absolutely dead. Every single match was bots. You can tell because their name always ends in one big letter, and one number. They behave like absolute idiots. I thought Im just surprisingly good, but that has yet to be seen, because no humans exist in this game. Another aspect I really dont understand, how is this even funded? The game itself is super cheap, and despite it having a gacha system, theres actually no top ups or in-app purchases. I mean, I really appreciate if a online game doesnt have malicious systems, but how do you guys make money, to further develop Unlimited Links, and keep it alive?

Formstar

felt like a game like this needs reviews, especially since it's a very small game with some possible potential. Dreams: Unlimited links is a third person shooter with hero (Overwatch, Valorant, etc) and Splatoon based mechanics It's important (for a game like this especially) to find your niche. What makes that, as a concept, so hard is that Dreams is in and of itself a genre within a genre... within a genre. It doesn't matter how hard you try, getting compared to another game in said genre is bound to happen even if you don't particularly want it to (think Rivals of Aether or Multiversus to Smash, or Metroidvanias as a whole being compared to Metroid and Castlevania). You have to be able to recognize that aspect while also striving to be unique so that not only do you not scare off that target audience, you also pick up a new audience. From my perspective, I find this game's target audience to be people that want to play Splatoon, but on PC (atleast that's why I found initial interest). I can see there being an audience for a Splatoon-like game if they don't have a Switch, or are tired of playing on their Switch. Maybe you want to take a break from Splatoon to play a similar game? Who knows. I feel like this game could work for those sorts of people, ESPECIALLY because it's so cheap comparatively ($3 is insanely good value). My issue isn't necessarily wanting to play the game, but the content in it. Mechanically speaking, this game is fairly polished considering it's a 3 dollar game from a company I do not recognize. The developers behind this definitely took a look at shooters (especially Splatoon) for inspiration to try and make a fun, colorful game that has some fast paced interactions once you get the hang of it (they succeeded to me personally). Is there some balancing issues? Hell yes. I feel like some of the heroes can feel very imbalanced in both directions, with some feeling super good, while others feeling extremely bad. Gameplay feel has A LOT of clunky moments, especially in combat. For players that are familiar with Splatoon-like combat, this game doesn't even have a manual keybind to go into the paint, so there is a lot of moments where I'm being shot at and all I can really do is try to literally walk away because i can't manually jump into paint to escape faster. The paint itself also disappears overtime (it's on a VERY fast timer), so there are a lot of moments where I have to decide whether I shoot the person in front of me, paint the floor under me before it goes away, or hope the enemy whiffs my already gigantic hitbox. With all that micromanaging, you'll also begin to notice that there are a lot of times where you simply never have enough paint to do even 2 of those things at once (unless there's some sort of paint saver perk I haven't unlocked yet since I haven't played nearly enough (also yes there is perks I just don't know enough about them yet to say if they are cheap or P2W or w/e)). I guess in a way that means there is some depth to combat, but personally something feels off about those elements. I also neglected to mention that something about the maps and/or spawn points don't sit well with me. I feel like if you have a good enough team (and the right gear), spawn camping will be EXTREMELY easy to pull off. Even if you don't succeed in spawn camping them the entire game, just taking up that allotted time doing so will make it near impossible for the opponents to swing the game since games do not last long. Side note: I wonder how this game would be received if there wasn't even any paint to begin with. I feel like it would lose a layer in its gameplay, but maybe replacing it with something else would be interesting; just a thought. What's important to note though is that with a game this early into its lifespan (technically it's still in early access as I'm making this) I can't super complain about the mechanics yet. I can, however, complain about some artistic decisions. Artistically speaking, this is a solid looking game (also considering it's a 3 dollar game from a company i do not recognize). UI is pretty solid albeit not very unique, but it has a nice pop of color to it that gives it a very inviting feel (some of the art for the gamemodes look VERY cute). I have my own gripes about the way the faces look on some characters, but that might just be me. What is a gigantic (also ironic issue) is character design (namely Bao Bao). Bao Bao is like.... painfully similar to an OC by the artist named Deadslug. I mean literally. The creepy smile and eyes, color scheme, hair color. I genuinely thought this game was about their OC when I first saw it. This isn't a good look ESPECIALLY for a game that will already get hate for being called a copy of Splatoon (not to say that's what I believe, but only what I assume others will say). I'm unaware if any of the other characters are similar to other artist's work, but it is also worth noting that some of the character's key art renders look like they were AI assisted. Something about Bel and Rei Kisugi's faces look super sus (like stable diffusion or w/e idk terminology). If it is not AI assisted I apologize (even if it is, it's not really a gripe for most people, especially if it was the artist that used AI to assist in their final render). Another random side note is that artistically I like the way the characters look (mainly face structure) in the key art more than their in game models, but that's personal taste. With all that out of the way, the final thing to touch would be whether you should try it or not. I mean, why not? If you don't like it, that's completely fine (refund or be sad that you didn't spend it on a bag of chips instead). However, if you are looking for an alternative to Splatoon at an incredibly cheap price then yeah give it a try. I personally like the way it plays for the most part, and between you and me I would love for the player count to not be in the single digits so I can stop running into bots lol. Some of the character designs are pretty cute, and I don't think it's particularly hard to obtain the characters you want (some can be obtained by literally logging in). The future for this game could be interesting if they do go forward with a BR and PvE mode. I'm also curious on what they mean by 'Player Mods' in the future. Like workshop? Our own recolors of characters? That sounds pretty cool. (Also sorry if it felt like I mentioned Splatoon too much, it was the closest game I could think of that is already out)
until recently i have loved this game however later on there was almost no games with actual players and all the matches where far to easy now a server has disapeared effectivly wiping out hours of progress and without a discord or any means of communication with the developers
US Servers have been taken offline after I played this for 12 hours which completely deleted all of my progress. I've even gifted it to three of my friends and I played every single day and got to talk to everyone who logged on. It wouldnt be that much of an issue as I find the game to be quite fun but the Asia servers are 490ping and unplayable even against bots. Leaving my old review below in the rare chance the devs decide to add US Servers back.. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is exactly what I was hoping Splatoon would be like on the PC and it comes with extra bits n bobs like gear and even buildables in the match that can completely change how to get to an objective! Im absolutely loving this but my only complaint would be that the bots could be a little bit better.... :P
cool game cool competitive shooter similar to the Splatoon and Splatoon 3 series with NINTENDO SWITCH if you like this audience and the more familiar gameplay then it’s worth picking up and playing if you wanted to try something like that but don’t have a console. good alternative for overwatch paladins and pvzgw2 whenever someone wants to change games for some time.
Game could be fun, but there is absolutly no one one playng, no one, also no europe servers, you must play on either asia or na, wich means 300+ pin if youre in europe. Cheap nice, but dead.
