Reviews
Compared to Fatal Frame series, even considering this game being an indie title, there are many problems. The third-person camera collides with everything in interiors and is overly sensitive to collisions. Puzzles are unintuitive and have no UI or environmental indications on how to solve them most of the time. There are many moments in the game where the player is left confused on what to do next or where to go next, which chain of events to expect. Everything else is well done, but the problems mentioned above kill the whole experience.
from the remaster, only the word. bugs, bugs, and more bugs
3. Zoom in/out kalau pakai kamera kok udah ga secepat yang dulu ya? (Bukan ver. Remastered) soalnya selama main DreadOut senjata andalan tuh kamera ketimbang ponsel, cuma di DreadOut Remastered nih kalau pakai kamera terus nge zoom in/out lelet bangeeeet ♥♥♥, engga kek yang sebelumnya kalau nge zoom sat-set, tolong dong jangan diubah kek gitu biarin aja kek yang dulu zoom in/out nyaaaaa. 4. Untuk DreadOut Dark of Keepers: 1. Mental ke dinding dan zoom in/outnya lemot sama seperti DreadOut sebelumnya. 2.
DreadOut Remastered Collection, developed by Digital Happiness and published by Digital Happiness in collaboration with Soft Source, is a curated revival of a cult survival-horror series that wears its identity proudly. Bringing together remastered versions of DreadOut and DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark, the collection offers a complete snapshot of the franchise’s early vision—one rooted in atmosphere, cultural folklore, and a deliberate embrace of vulnerability over empowerment. Rather than reinventing these games for a modern audience, the remaster refines their presentation and performance while preserving the uneasy, rough-edged personality that made them stand out in the first place. At the heart of the collection is Linda, a high school student thrust into a supernatural nightmare that blends the mundane with the deeply unsettling. The original DreadOut forms the narrative backbone, sending players through abandoned towns, schools, and other decaying spaces where the line between reality and the spirit world feels dangerously thin. Progress is slow and often disorienting, encouraging cautious exploration and rewarding attentiveness to environmental details. Keepers of the Dark, included as part of the package, complements this journey by shifting into a more fragmented, encounter-driven structure, placing Linda in a liminal Mirror Realm filled with powerful spirits and isolated haunted domains. Together, the two games create a fuller picture of the DreadOut universe, balancing narrative exploration with concentrated horror set pieces. The remastered presentation enhances the experience without stripping away its oppressive tone. Improved lighting, higher resolutions, smoother frame rates, and refined effects make environments easier to read while still maintaining heavy shadows and visual distortion. Hallways feel longer, rooms feel emptier, and familiar locations gain renewed impact through better contrast and atmospheric detail. These enhancements don’t transform the games into modern graphical showcases, but they do make long play sessions more comfortable and immersive, especially for players encountering the series for the first time. Gameplay remains firmly rooted in classic survival horror sensibilities. Combat revolves around Linda’s smartphone and camera, tools that double as both investigation devices and weapons against the supernatural. Ghosts must be confronted directly, framed through the lens, and captured at the right moment to weaken or banish them. This mechanic forces players to face their fear rather than flee from it, creating tension that feels psychological as much as mechanical. The system is intentionally awkward at times—camera handling can feel slow, movement is stiff, and encounters often demand patience—but these traits reinforce Linda’s vulnerability and the sense that she is outmatched by the forces she faces. The collection’s strongest asset is its atmosphere, deeply shaped by Indonesian folklore. The spirits encountered are not generic horror creatures but figures inspired by local myths and cultural anxieties, lending the game a distinctive identity rarely seen in mainstream horror. Sound design plays a crucial role, using distant cries, unsettling silence, and sudden distortions to keep players constantly on edge. Fear often comes not from what is immediately visible, but from what might emerge from the darkness just beyond the flashlight’s reach. That said, the remastered collection does not fully escape the limitations of its original design. Puzzles can be opaque, progression is sometimes unclear, and mechanical jank persists in places despite technical improvements. These elements may frustrate players accustomed to smoother, more guided modern horror experiences. However, for others, these imperfections add to the tension, evoking an era of survival horror where confusion and discomfort were intentional parts of the experience rather than flaws to be eliminated. By bundling both titles together, the collection provides meaningful value and a more complete understanding of the series’ evolution. The contrast between the exploratory dread of the original game and the confrontation-heavy structure of Keepers of the Dark keeps the experience varied, preventing fatigue and highlighting different facets of the same haunting world. It becomes clear that DreadOut’s strength lies not in mechanical polish, but in mood, cultural specificity, and its willingness to let fear linger. Ultimately, DreadOut Remastered Collection is a love letter to a distinctive strain of indie horror. It does not chase modern trends or smooth over every rough edge, instead preserving the unsettling atmosphere and folkloric roots that define the series. For players who value mood, myth, and psychological tension—and who are willing to accept some old-school friction—the collection offers a memorable and deeply atmospheric journey into a horror universe that feels personal, unfamiliar, and genuinely unsettling.
