DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark
Genre: Horror / Supernatural, Folklore Perspective: 3rd Person My Rating:⭐⭐🔹🔹🔹 💙Summary (TLDR): Sadly I can't recommend this "DLC" of Dreadout whereas the main-game was a gorgeous treat. This "DLC" was very boring to me personally as it’s basically just a “shooter” or mercenaries-mode where you pew pew with a camera flash. It is not entirely bad but it wasn’t anything special either!
The Positives & "Not So Goods"

The game takes place in a “HUB” as to say from where you can choose different doors which will lead to different realms so you can banish and fight monsters.
It’s basically DreadOut’s equivalent of a “mercenary-mode”. You go from door to door and snap photos of that boss within until it dies.
You have to solve little "puzzles" of sorts to find objects and the like between the realms to be able to fight every boss, you can't just run in and cause havok everywhere which at least was nice!
Sadly there isn’t any sort of story here really… we barely learn anything new and in fact it makes the main-game story even more confusing. The descriptions of the different ghosts we banish was kinda okay though!
The areas don’t have much to offer. It’s just the “arena” for the boss and maybe a few empty hall- or walkways.
DreadOut: Keepers of The Dark, developed and published by Digital Happiness, is a compact yet intense standalone horror experience that distills the unsettling identity of the DreadOut series into a more focused and confrontational form. Rather than serving as a traditional sequel, the game functions as a dark side story that places atmosphere, enemy encounters, and supernatural tension at the forefront. It embraces the spirit of classic survival horror, complete with mechanical roughness and deliberate discomfort, offering an experience that feels hauntingly personal and unapologetically eerie. Players once again take control of Linda, a high school student drawn into the supernatural, but this time her journey unfolds within the Mirror Realm, a strange liminal space that acts as a hub connecting multiple haunted domains. Each domain is ruled by a powerful ghost rooted in Indonesian folklore, and the game’s structure revolves around confronting these entities in a nonlinear order. This fragmented progression shifts the focus away from linear storytelling and instead emphasizes dread through isolation, repetition, and the sense of being trapped in an otherworldly prison where escape must be earned through survival. Atmosphere is the game’s strongest weapon. Dark corridors, abandoned interiors, and oppressive silence create a constant sense of unease, broken only by sudden audio stings, distorted whispers, or the unmistakable signs of a ghost drawing near. Lighting is intentionally limited, forcing players to peer into shadows where danger may or may not be lurking. The sound design plays a crucial role in maintaining tension, often signaling threats before they appear visually, heightening paranoia and keeping players in a perpetual state of alertness. The environments may reuse assets from the original DreadOut, but their rearrangement and contextual framing give them a renewed sense of menace. The core gameplay centers around the series’ signature camera-based combat system. Linda’s smartphone and camera are both her primary defense and her greatest vulnerability, requiring players to face ghosts directly rather than fleeing or fighting with conventional weapons. Successfully capturing spirits on camera weakens or banishes them, but doing so demands steady aim, precise timing, and the courage to hold your ground as entities close in. This mechanic reinforces the psychological horror at the heart of the experience, as fear is not avoided but confronted head-on, often under intense pressure. Enemy encounters are more prominent and frequent than in the original game, with boss spirits acting as major milestones that test the player’s mastery of camera combat. These confrontations can be grueling, especially when combined with limited feedback on enemy health and occasional mechanical stiffness. Movement can feel sluggish, and encounters sometimes border on frustration due to awkward hit detection or unpredictable enemy behavior. Yet these rough edges also contribute to the game’s unsettling tone, evoking the feel of older survival horror titles where vulnerability and uncertainty were part of the design rather than flaws to be smoothed away. What truly distinguishes DreadOut: Keepers of The Dark is its strong cultural identity. The ghost designs, mythological references, and narrative undertones draw heavily from Indonesian folklore, lending authenticity and uniqueness to the horror. These spirits feel deeply personal and symbolic rather than generic, making each encounter resonate beyond simple jump scares. For players unfamiliar with these myths, the game offers an unsettling glimpse into a different horror tradition, one rooted in superstition, spiritual consequence, and ancestral fear. Despite its limited scope and technical imperfections, the game succeeds in delivering a concentrated dose of fear. Its nonlinear structure encourages exploration and experimentation, while repeated encounters with hostile spirits ensure that tension never fully dissipates. The experience may not appeal to players seeking polished mechanics or a tightly woven narrative, but for those who appreciate atmosphere-driven horror and are willing to tolerate some jank in exchange for genuine dread, it offers something memorable. Ultimately, DreadOut: Keepers of The Dark stands as a raw and uncompromising entry in the survival horror genre. It strips away excess and focuses on fear in its most immediate form, using atmosphere, folklore, and vulnerability to leave a lasting impression. For fans of the series and players drawn to culturally grounded horror experiences, it remains a chilling journey into darkness that lingers long after the screen fades to black. Rating: 7/10
«DreadOut: Keepers of The Dark» — посредственная игра, схожая по механике с «FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO» с использованием камеры.
drerau kepi of de dark
She takes a full 3 business days to get up after getting hit. Enemies are able to climb on top of you before getting up so you immediately get hit again and die very quickly.
In this game we return as Linda into the abandoned town from the first game, i think it is between act 1 and 2. The atmosphere. I really like this expansion but also could have been an DLC for the first game. So create a extra game for it wasn't really needed. Buuuuut it is fun and scary anyways. So if you've enjoyed the first game you probably should by this as well. :3
