Dreadful, developed and published by Volens Nolens Games, is a survival horror experience that attempts to blend psychological tension with investigative gameplay. Centered around the haunting story of a family massacre, the game places players in the role of David Hill, a journalist investigating the mysterious deaths surrounding the Smith family. The narrative promises an eerie atmosphere steeped in ambiguity, where reality may be unreliable, and danger lurks in both what is seen and unseen. Despite its promising concept, the game struggles to fully realize its potential due to technical shortcomings and uneven execution. The story sets a dark, unsettling tone from the start. The Smith family tragedy, involving a father who allegedly killed his wife and children before committing suicide, forms the grim backdrop for the investigation. As David Hill, players explore the family home and the surrounding town, piecing together clues to unravel the truth. The game heavily emphasizes atmosphere, using dim lighting, sparse sound design, and detailed environments to build a sense of dread. A recurring theme is the unreliability of perception, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s famous quote, pushing players to question what they see and hear as they delve deeper into the mystery. Gameplay in Dreadful is split between first-person and third-person perspectives, each offering distinct mechanics. The first-person sections focus on stealth and exploration, where players must carefully navigate environments and manage their breath to avoid detection by hostile entities. When combat becomes necessary, the game switches to third-person, allowing players to wield found weapons against threats. While this dual approach is ambitious and provides some variety, it also creates a somewhat disjointed experience. The transitions between perspectives can feel awkward, and combat is often simplistic and lacks polish, detracting from immersion. The game features several handcrafted levels designed to immerse players in its eerie world. Each area encourages thorough exploration, with numerous details and objects that contribute to the narrative and atmosphere. However, despite the well-crafted environments, the overall gameplay loop can become repetitive due to limited enemy variety and simplistic AI behaviors. The stealth mechanics, while a key component, sometimes suffer from inconsistent enemy detection, leading to moments of frustration. Similarly, the combat sections lack depth, making encounters feel shallow and occasionally clunky. From a technical standpoint, Dreadful has struggled with optimization and stability. Many players report performance issues, bugs, and occasional glitches, which break immersion in a game that relies heavily on atmosphere. Furthermore, the development of Dreadful has been notably slow, with long periods of inactivity and a lack of substantial updates. This stagnant development cycle has led to a fragmented player base and uncertainty about the game’s future progress. Community engagement from the developers has been limited, which has left some players feeling disconnected from the project. Despite these challenges, Dreadful has managed to cultivate a small but dedicated following. Fans appreciate the game’s creepy ambiance and its attempt to tell a psychological horror story through investigative gameplay. The unique concept of blending first-person stealth exploration with third-person combat adds an interesting twist that, while imperfectly executed, shows promise. For players who enjoy atmospheric horror and are willing to overlook technical flaws, Dreadful offers moments of genuine tension and curiosity. In summary, Dreadful is a game with an intriguing premise and a distinct mood that attempts to stand out in the crowded survival horror genre. Its focus on storytelling, atmosphere, and the dual gameplay perspective provides an original approach, but the title is held back by technical issues, uneven mechanics, and a protracted development cycle. While it offers some memorable moments for horror enthusiasts, it ultimately falls short of delivering a polished and satisfying experience. Prospective players should approach Dreadful with tempered expectations, appreciating its ambition while recognizing its current limitations. Rating: 6/10
