A very oldschool game. Good puzzles and good fights with minions.
If you like old school RPG challenges, this one's for you. I remembered playing this as a kid and had no clue what I was doing. Get ready to write important quest info down and memorize hot keys for spells! The challenge is fun though, and there are countless hours of gameplay for those with the "grapes" to classic game.
Oldschool game that works when it wants, not my cup of tea but I'm sure there are some who like the classics such as this.
Ich hatte keine Ahnung was gut ist, was mir Spaß machen könnte.
Drakkhen, developed by Infogrames and published by Atari, is a landmark RPG that pushed the boundaries of role-playing games in the late 1980s with its ambitious design and experimental mechanics. Originally released in 1989, the game places players on a mysterious island inhabited by dragon-blooded creatures, tasking them with forming a party of four adventurers to restore balance to a world on the brink of chaos. The characters follow traditional RPG archetypes, including fighter, scout, priest, and mage, each contributing unique abilities that must be strategically employed to survive the challenges of exploration and combat. The narrative unfolds gradually through in-game events and a detailed accompanying manual, creating a sense of immersion that draws players into its rich and fantastical world. One of Drakkhen’s most remarkable innovations is its approach to world exploration. Unlike many RPGs of its era, which relied on grid-based movement, Drakkhen offers a continuous, scrolling 3D landscape that gives players unprecedented freedom to traverse forests, mountains, and rivers in a seamless environment. Encounters with enemies occur organically within this open world, seamlessly transitioning into real-time combat sequences that demand both quick thinking and strategic foresight. The combat system, which allows active control of each party member, was groundbreaking for its time, blending tactical decision-making with the immediacy of action-oriented gameplay. Visually, Drakkhen utilizes a hybrid style that merges 3D landscapes with 2D character sprites. The outdoor environments are expansive and varied, evoking a sense of scale and adventure, while the interiors of castles and dungeons are carefully detailed in 2D, providing a stark yet appealing contrast. Although the graphics may appear dated by modern standards, the art style contributes to the game’s distinctive atmosphere and reinforces the sense of exploration and discovery that defines the experience. Each region of the island is visually distinct, helping players orient themselves while maintaining a sense of mystery and intrigue throughout the journey. The game’s audio design complements its visual and gameplay innovations. While early versions had limited musical accompaniment, ports such as the SNES release expanded the soundtrack, offering more atmospheric and varied compositions that enhance the tension and mood of exploration. Sound effects, though simple, give personality to creatures and NPCs, helping bring the island to life and aiding player immersion. The combination of ambient sound and music works in concert with the visual design to create a compelling sensory experience despite the technological limitations of the time. Despite its many innovations, Drakkhen presents notable challenges. Its open-world structure, while liberating, can feel directionless, leaving players to navigate vast landscapes without clear guidance. This can be particularly daunting for those accustomed to more structured RPGs. Encounters are often difficult and unforgiving, requiring careful preparation and tactical thinking. The lack of an in-game map or compass in certain versions further complicates navigation, demanding careful attention to environmental cues and memorization of the terrain. These design choices contribute to both the game’s challenge and its unique character, rewarding persistence and exploration. In retrospect, Drakkhen is a historically significant RPG that demonstrated bold experimentation in 3D exploration, real-time combat, and open-world design. While it may not appeal to all modern players due to its unconventional pacing and steep difficulty, the game’s innovations laid the groundwork for future developments in the genre. For enthusiasts of RPG history and those interested in the evolution of immersive, experimental gameplay, Drakkhen offers a fascinating and rewarding experience, showcasing the ambition and creativity of late-1980s game design. Rating: 6/10
It's rather average and dated
