Down Ward is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This is a poorly designed, single-player action platformer. The story centers around a little owl named Gable who ventures into a ruined land to rekindle relics. There's limited graphics options (because 2D pixelcrap) but you can change the pallete. That doesn't help it look better. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. This game is fairly dated at 6 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. On pricing, this is "free" enough, at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 7 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
Amazing free hidden gem, so minimalistic, pure pixel awesomeness!!
Ok, this free title is soo eeffing cool. It's hard to describe the look, it's almost monochrome, but it's not, it's just a very limited pallet. But, you can switch between many, many preloaded pallets, or you can customize your own pallet if you'd like to. At a glance, the visuals appear minimalist. But take a closer look and you'll find there is actually a lot of detail and it's rather well done. The music so far is just doing it for me. And the flight mechanic. It's perfectly realistic and fun, and something that's unique, at least to me. Also, the developer as I understand it has launched a kickstarted related to this game, I think he seeks to make this free version a kind of prototype and wants to add to it and then sell it. I'll be watching.
+Beautiful yet simple Pixel-animation ++ The colour palette changes with the level, and/but you can also choose the colour palette you like most directly in the menu +Interesting Controls +Fun Level-design +Beautiful atmospheric Soundtrack
I like the game very much, the controls take a bit of getting used to, but works well with a gamepad. The graphics on a large screen can confuse the eye, but with a little distance or a different resolution can help. It is again a very nice free game that I was able to discover a long time ago on another platform. It's worth a try, so press the install button.
It's a cute and fun little puzzle platformer that could. The later stages become true practice in patience and are reminiscent of Celeste, but I prefer the aesthetic and atmosphere here much more. The controls definitely take some getting used to (I used a controller and you can select from different button layouts as well as use keyboard controls). You'll have to really master them if you wish to win the later levels and I kind of wonder if I chose the hard way by playing with a controller and maybe keyboard was the way to go for this one. There is only a single music track used throughout all the levels but it was pretty enough that it didn't really bother me. The visuals are very original Gameboy and you can switch the palette as well which can make some levels super pretty looking. I also have to commend the pixel art and animation here because it's stellar for the owl main character and fantastic in almost every other detail. There are some small nitpicks here and there like some sadistic difficulty spikes (first level you meet the ghost vultures was the biggest one) and kind of floaty controls (granted, you do control a bird) but I'm giving this a confident thumbs up because the game's single developer has really put their heart and soul into this and it absolutely really shows. Best of all? It's completely free! Bravo! More please!
A fun unique little platformer. Beautiful audio and art. Tons there for completionists. All in all, really amazing for a free game, and I would still recommend if it wasn't. Also a single guy did literally everything and that always impresses me.
