Fun old cartridge style game.
Not recommended until Piko properly renames the typo'd executable named - I kid you not: 'Dorke and imp [dot] exe'. Even the game window title typo's it as "Imp", so it is clearly a build error. How on Earth did they not catch this because it literally makes the game unplayable due to a 'missing executable' error by the Steam client. Besides the launch issues, the game has the typical Piko emulation finish of extra input lag. Mind you, you are getting punished HARD - no level check points in this game - if you miss even one jump because of crappy inputs. You should probably ditch the "work" done by Piko anyway and run the ROM that is most likely being emulated with something that does not suck. I can tell the original game has some interesting designs such as ledge grabbing that even modern games could learn from. It is just that you are not going to get the best experience if you run it through this Steam release. It has the Amiga music feel to it. It has those soft synth tracks. UPDATE: Apparently it WAS made with Amiga computers according to a Vice article. There are a bunch of homebrews like that. Having played the first two levels, I have to say that this game is not fun. It has an insane amount of pixel-perfect jumps and the levels are puzzles in that if you cannot produce a big key AND a route towards the exit door, you need to start over from the start. I would expect challenge games like this as some custom challenges at a video game tournament, though not in a consumer product. It is grueling. Every level is a major challenge and a headache on par with the last levels of other games. Now put this together with the fact that the game has about 50 levels of that stuff, some of them being boss battles. The mere idea of fighting bosses with this over-convoluted control scheme EVEN if you were playing this on an emulator instead of that awful, laggy Mednafen build that Piko always uses, is DREADFUL. I get the feeling this game was not publisher approved specifically because it was too difficult and not fun at all. I bet that if this game had a "Level 1 Beat" achievement, it would have a completion rate of about 10 %. Take a look of a full playthrough of this game and see it for yourself. If you take the res/game file, rename it to dorke dot smc and run it in ZSNES or SNES9X, it will run much quite smoothly. The jumping is still stiff because apparently there are idle animation frames or sth that have to be cycled through when a jump starts. I wonder who were the chuckle-Fs that added the tag 'Casual' to the game. That could not be further from the truth. As much as getting the game run takes significant investment and effort.
I'm not going to lie, I had never heard of this game until I saw it in a Fanatical bundle and figured, "Why not?" Because it was so cheap. I'd like to recommend this game and say it's just "not for everyone" but decided after beating it that it was too annoying at times to deserve a recommendation. Instead, I'd like to say it's a light no, but you can think of it more as a mixed review. The controls are clunky, which is fine because what else would you expect from a game that was originally supposed to be on the SNES? The art style/graphics are... fine, for the most part, but the first world is really visually and mechanically boring. The game really starts to feel, not good, but better once you get to the second world. The level design feels LESS random, and the worlds themselves actually look unique. All of that considered, I WOULD have recommended the game, but then I spent about two hours on World 4-8, and my thoughts changed because it highlights what are, in my opinion, two of the game's worst issues. Those issues being the game never explains anything and most of the levels feel randomly put together by a seven-year-old trying out Super Mario Maker for the first time. Good lord, I don't know what the developers were thinking with this level! I had to watch a walkthrough on YouTube, which I could only find one of, just to figure out how to traverse the level. To actually beat the level, you have to do what I assume is a bug several times. Whether it's a bug or an unexplained mechanic, it is too annoyingly hard to perform consistently. Even though I'm only giving Dorke and Ymp a "light no," I would also like to mention what I liked about it. The controls are very clunky, but I found them kind of charming after a while and actually kind of like how shooting enemies works in theory. For the most part, you control Dorke, but to shoot and glide, you use Ymp. The shooting is comparable to having an arm on your back and throwing one of those rubber balls you got as a kid from one of those quarter machines at a grocery store. This sounds clunky/frustrating, and it kind of is (especially against the bees -_-), but I think it's the clunk that made it feel all the more satisfying near the middle of the game when I actually had the hang of it. All in all, I don't regret getting and playing the game even if a lot of it was excrutiatingly annoying. If you're into these kinds of old-school clunky games and you can find a way to get it SUPER CHEAP, like I did, then yeah, it's probably worth a shot. Otherwise, you should probably pass on this one.

If you are a 16 bits hardcore fan, play Dorke and Ymp. The game has that SNES-feel that you're looking for. It's a fun and challenging platform game, with nice graphics and cool soundtrack. But... Dorke and Ymp is a bit too challenging, although... well, to say the truth, it's a difficult, hard as nails game. Se você é um grande fã dos 16 bits, jogue Dorke and Ymp. O jogo tem todo aquele ar de SNES que você procura. É um jogo plataforma divertido e desafiador, com bons gráficos e trilha sonora, apenas bastante difícil.
